MAY - JUNE 1989

Hello Everybody,

We come to the end of another summer, and all in all it has been a good season. Enough sunshine, and crowds of nudists on some of our beaches.

Media coverage, especially in the North Island, has made the general public aware that nudism is quite widespread, and is becoming more popular.

The flow-on from the 'Baring All' article continues, with some people writing to local authorities and Members of Parliament, asking for 'clothing-optional' beaches. The Standards Association is apparently canvassing local councils for their opinions about the by-law. Tony Wilson is still busy writing letters on our behalf, and a report from him appears later in this newsletter.

The Hawkes Bay Sun Club held a beach day in February, with much publicity and lobbying of local VIP's, and have made a request for changes to the law, giving nudists legal protection for bathing on designated beaches.

Canterbury Sun Club held a combined beach day with Christchurch FBG members, and were pleasantly surprised with the acceptance they received from local residents. So it's all good news.

And now for the goodies we've arranged for the winter.

AGM and WAIWERA TRIP

Make a note of the date - Saturday 26 August. Further details in your next newsletter. We invite country members to make a weekend of it, a little holiday in the Big Smoke! Billets can be arranged.

Yes, it's that time of year again. Our winter swim nights will be starting on Saturday 20 May, 6.30 - 8.30 at the Swimarama Pool, Lagoon Drive, Panmure, just down the road from the roundabout towards the lagoon. Full size tepid pool, children's pool, two saunas, showers and changing facilities. Adults $2.50, children 50 cents. This year these swim nights will be run by John and Fran, and will be held on the third Saturday of every month May to October. Remember the dates:- 20 May and 17 June. All members, sun club friends and visitors welcome.

Both offer a concession rate of $6.50 if we go as a group. Meet outside at 6 p.m. Dates:- Sundays 23 April at Pacific, 30 April at Alladin's Contact: John or Fran, 565-219.

The first dinner-and-swim night was a great success, and will be held again in June and September. Riccard's swim nights are held at the Parakai Tourist Complex on the last Friday of each month, 6 - 10 p.m. Adults $4.50, children $2.80. This is the last pool on your left as you drive through Parakai. Our hosts the Hibiscus Coast Sun Club will be putting on another dinner at the swim night on 30 June. The cost is $4 each, and for catering purposes, bookings are required. Please fill in the booking slip at the end of this newsletter, and return it to us by 23 June. Dates for swim nights are:- 28 April, 26 May and 30 June.

Your courtesy in observing sun club etiquette would be appreciated.

COUNTRY CORNER

How are all you folks out there? Your letters are always welcome. I've had no news from Wellington yet, but I guess you're still there and surviving the storms. Edna Barnes of Hawkes Bay Sun Club reports a very successful beach day at Ocean Beach on 26 February, with 20 - 30 people there, some from distant parts, with plenty of local radio and newspaper publicity.

Joyce Turner from Christchurch writes about the CSC beach day:-
"The weather was absolutely perfect, blue skies and sunshine all day with only a light breeze later in the afternoon - unbelievable in view of the fact that other days before and since have been cold. Canterbury Sun Club members had very short notice, but tons of people turned up, and it was a most relaxing, 'laid-back' and sociable gathering. The only beach outings CSC have had in the past have been to Tumbledown Bay on Banks Peninsula, which has difficult access. It is much more convenient to use the miles of empty beaches to the north of the city. There is a settlement of baches at Waikuku, and local people assure us that naked bathing is quite usual in the area, and that Waikuku was a good choice. We now have the confidence to go ahead and use local beaches, as you do in Auckland, simply avoiding the main areas so that no one will have cause to take exception to us."

No further info about the Fernland Pool swim nights. These were on the first Friday of each month. Local contact is John Trotter TG 075-64-203.

LE BONS BAY

From Christchurch, follow State Highway 75 through Little River to Hilltop. Turn left and follow Eastern Bays Road 30 km, turn off at the sign to Le Bons Bay and proceed downhill to the beach. 88 km from Christchurch by sealed road. Walk along the beach to your right to a beaut little stream which leaves lovely warm pools at low tide.

VIDEO

The New Zealand Nudist Federation has a video called "The Take Off" for hire at $10 for up to 4 weeks. The video was produced by the American Sunbathing Association around 1960. Please apply direct to The Secretary, NZNF, P.O. Box 1359, Wellington.

PHOTO AND ART COMPETITION

2.  Entries must be suitable and available for illustrating our beach list. The committee reserve the right to exclude any entry which is considered unsuitable.

5.  Please make sure your entries are properly packed. The Free Beach Group accepts no responsibility for entries lost or damaged in transit.

6.  The entry fee is $1 plus 50 cents for each entry. Any number of entries may be submitted.

TONY'S LETTERS

"Over the past summer I have been indulging in a little bit of pulling the lion's tail by way of letter writing to various authorities. The results have been mixed but always interesting.

Perhaps the best known letter was to the New Zealand Standards Association re Model By-law 1907.2. This letter has received much publicity in the press and the issue is on-going.

Other letters have been sent to the Takapuna City Council and the ARA concerning whose by-laws apply at Pohutukawa Bay (Long Bay). While Takapuna seems adamant it is their by-law (1907.2 as above), the ARA are not sure this is true, and are currently checking on some of the legal points raised by me.

Perhaps the least rewarding letter, and most threatening reply, was to/from the Superintendent of the Takapuna Police re the actions of several officers from that station at St. Leonards Beach. It would appear that there are no general guidelines issued nationally on the Summary Offences Act, and that the relevant sections of the Act (4 and 27) are left to local Super's to interpret. This is unsatisfactory, and I intend to communicate with the Ministers of Police and Justice in an attempt to have some nationwide policy promulgated."

BEACH REPORT

In general, attendance at our organised beach days and other events this year has been very good. At every beach day I have been to, there have been other nudists on the beach as well as ourselves, and at St. Leonards, on 5 March, the beach was literally covered with nudists. It looked like a Mediterranean nudist resort! Our Easter camp at Uretiti was another success, with John and Fran making people welcome, and plenty of fish, including a huge stingray. One day I spent a few hours at Piha, and will put it on our diary next year. The most noticeable flop was our barbecue at Mellon's Bay, nil attendance two years in a row. This event will not be held next year. We must apologise for the February swim night at Riccard's, which could not be held because the pools had been emptied by mistake. Sorry about that.

So that's the news. No need to hibernate just because it's winter, you know. Come along to our swim nights and be part of the fun!

"When tomorrow comes, what am I going to wish I had done today?"

Best wishes to you all,

Adrianne
