A collaborative collation of the general history of Naturism in New Zealand |

|
|||||
The 1960s saw a 'growth spurt' of the naturist movement, resulting in a doubling of the number of clubs around the country, and probably a tripling of total membership. (Unfortunately no nationally coherent statistics of membership eventuated until the advent of the computer heralded the controversial establishment of a national database in the 90s.) Meantime, most of the club infrastructure around the country was completed or consolidated, especially those essential mainstays: the toilet facilities and the pool. It was also an era of growing social freedoms, as exemplified by the advent of 'Rock & Roll', the pill and even naturist films at the 'pictures'! Slowly, some of the general population came to discover 'the hippies' going for a casual skinny-dip at 'second tier' beaches from Kaitaia to Bluff, without much hindrance.
