Fred Bear Fred Bear

May 1981

Dear Members,

Well, another summer has gone; in the main, a good summer, marred only by excessive cloud in some parts of the country - especially in February.

Although it is disappointing to some degree that no official Free Beaches have yet been established, much progress has nevertheless been made. Two councils - one the largest in the country - have, acting on favourable recommendations from sub-committees, gone to lengthy debate in full council before rejecting our requests. Throughout these considerations we have received a good deal of publicity, mostly favourable.

The use of unofficial beaches - and these continue to proliferate - has also progressed at a heartening rate. Much of this can probably be attributed to what may be the most important development of the year, i.e. the arising of a favourable press. Irrespective of what politicians may feel, it is the press who ultimately dictate the opinions of NZers.

The continuing lack of official beaches raises that old question "Do we really want them?" Object (a) of the Group Rules reads "To promote the establishment of legal Free Beaches ..." The present committee and those of past years have pursued a policy of seeking these by gaining recognition by Councils. It could, however, be suggested that in view of a lack of any law specifically banning nude bathing on NZ beaches all our beaches are "free" anyway. It is only public opinion and ingrained habit that have decreed in the past that some form of clothing must be worn, and the form has changed considerably over the years.

So perhaps the way to readily accepted free beaches is through the public rather than through councils. Just how we can convince the public that they already have the right to go nude on beaches is open to suggestion.

AND I MEAN THAT LITERALLY. The A.G.M. is set down for 1st August, so come along and have your say in the movement by electing your new Committee and putting forward your suggestions and gripes.

The week-end of the AGM promises to be an interesting one, worth a visit to Auckland by members not too far distant. Friday 31st July is the Swim Nite at Parakai by courtesy of the North Shore Nudist Club and after the AGM we are holding another evening at the Waiwera Pools. The first two were very successful - see the Diary for details. Sunday evenings of course the Sauna at Clive Green's is always popular.

SWIMERAMA evenings commence again this month, on 16th, and will continue over the winter on the third Saturday of each month (except August). Adults $1.00, children 5 to 15 yrs 30c. The use of the large sparkling clear pool and two saunas makes this a very pleasant couple of hours, which many members discovered too late, last year. MARK YOUR CALENDAR.

For all of you who follow the sun to Australia, the Australian Nudist Federation has compiled a comprehensive Club Guide which we can offer for $2.50 plus postage please (about 30c).

Also available now is a beautiful publication from Free Beaches, America, entitled "World Guide to Nude Beaches and Recreation." It comprises 200 pages of excellent, tasteful, photographs and information - world wide. The cost is a relatively modest $15 and orders need to be placed by 30 June direct to -

Jack Sutherland of 36 Eketone Street, Te Kuiti, wishes to advise any members living within spitting distance that he has a small sheltered garden suitable for sunbathing. Do look him up if you're in the area.

And Ron Williams, Ph. 275-7928, would like to hear from members in South Auckland who have a suitable yard for sunbathing which they would like to share with him.

As advised in your Diary, there will be another Film Evening on Saturday, 4 July. Bring along your slides, photographs, movies, and - most important - your friends. Wine, cheese, and biscuits (all in moderation) will be supplied and the cost, to cover expenses, will be $1.50 per adult head, children under 15 free.

At the St Barnabas Scout Hall in Clive Rd, Mt Eden there is ample parking and it is not hard to find. So again, MARK YOUR CALENDAR - meet your old friends and make some new ones.

If anyone would like to bring a little plate that would be most welcome.

Well that's about it for now, so let's keep the sunshine alive during the darker days.

Best wishes to you all, wherever in New Zealand you may be.

 Tony
