Fred Bear Fred Bear

OCTOBER

September, 1981

Dear Friends,

We've already had some nice sunny days and I must confess I've been out there enjoying every minute of it. I sunbathed alone at Shelly Bay — a lovely little spot, gently rolling waves and out of the howling gale and all. Several members called in to Norris's place to view its possibilities for camping and sunbathing. It is about six miles from Lake Wainamu and Bethell's Beach, so there is plenty to occupy you. We'll have a barbecue there on 7 November.

SUBSCRIPTIONS: Do hurry up and get your $8 in as soon as possible - it'll be $10 after 30 September! Please bypass your Local Organiser and pay subs. direct to the Treasurer to avoid delay with the records.

NELSON: News from the Nelson Sun Club, Box 467, Nelson, inviting us to come and sample their beautiful golden beaches. Can we get a local organiser for Nelson, to gather up a few more members and put on some beach trips - it must be one of the best places in New Zealand for sunbathing!

BEACH LIST: I am compiling a new beach list. Can all members out of Auckland please send me details of your beaches:— Proper name, local name; detailed directions; best tide times! description of access; special features.

LABOUR WEEKEND CAMP: I have booked sites 13 - 18 in a sheltered, secluded valley at the back of the Motor Camp at Muriwai Beach Domain. Adjacent water tap, toilets and public golf course; showers and cook-house at main buildings. Charges: $5.50 per night, four people, $7 with power, extra people $1.50 each per night. MEMBERS' CORNER: Robin is missing some of his Health and Efficiency magazines. have you got them???

Evan would like to make a film of Free Beach activities over the summer months, covering as many different beaches and events as he can get to. (And afford film for!) Usually he will be waving his camera about, lining up angles etc., before he actually starts filming, so if you particularly do not wish to be filmed, please let him know, or arrange yourself to face away.

As well as the movie, Evan hopes also to take some still photos to submit to the Naturist. Once again, if you do not wish to be photographed, let him know. Your photo would not be used without your written permission in any case, as it is Naturist policy to require model releases for all photos used.

Ken Knudsen is offering free board to a solo parent, widow, or someone, as company for his blind wife, and also for light household duties. They have a compact home with every facility, handy to all amenities, plenty of spare time. Phone Ken at Glen Eden 7519 (AK l8-75l9).

WEST COAST BEACHES: The West Coast beaches have a lure of their own - salt and sea spray that really charge up the ions in your blood.

Karekare is a fascinating place: a rushing stream complete with waterfall and rocky pools in a grassy park like Fairyland; a level walk behind the sand hills takes you out to the south end of the beach - more sheltered spots for sunbathing. For those who like walking, go south along a wide, wide beach, past the old railway tunnel to Pararaha Valley and back over Zion Hill. Or take a track that climbs from the north end round the tops of the cliffs above Mercer Bay - take a rope if you want to get down into it. Fantastic scenery! Popular spot for fishing, too, and the stream is perfect for children. Edmund Hillary used to practise rock-climbing up the majestic cliffs of Karekare. If you haven't been there, you've missed half your heritage of being an Aucklander - there's no place like Karekare!
