SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 1988

Dear Friends,

Our AGM got underway on time with the best attendance we've had for years, and everybody was busy judging the photo competition. Our nice new hail didn't have enough chairs or tables, and some had to stand. We hope to do better next time.

The photo competition was fun to set up. The photographs submitted, although few in number, were of excellent quality and a real pleasure to display. We thank Even Chugg for having this event. well-organised, and his report, with the results, is further down in this newsletter.

We were pleased to welcome seven members from out of Auckland, they certainty helped us to make up our quorum! They pointed out that our efforts to promote the Free Beach Group need to be spread ALL over New Zealand. How about a 'Country Corner' in our newsletters, just for you?

WAIWERA TRIP

About 52 members and friends thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Waiwera. The pool was warm, the food excellent, and it was lots of fun. it was good to see a number of new faces, as well as those who have attended for many years. People came from as far away as Whangarei and Tauranga. Because of the time it took for the bus trip, the committee have decided that in future the bus will go direct, with no pick-ups en route.

Some members have asked if we can have two Waiwera trips each year. The committee have set a tentative date for 8 April, 1989. We would not run a bus, but transport could probably he arranged for those who need it. Please let us know if you would come.

PROMOTION

At the AGM, it was decided that no action would be taken concerning legal free beaches unless it became necessary. But to counteract any moves against us, more publicity of our Group could be beneficial, with the aim of promoting a favourable image of the Free Beach Group among the general public, and indirectly gaining more members. The committee have decided on the following:-

  1. To appoint a new Patron;
  2. To list the Free Beach Group in the Community Directories printed by local authorities throughout New Zealand;
  3. To encourage members to display Fred Bear beach flags when sunbathing at the beach;
  4. To publish an Information Sheet which can be used for display and advertising;
  5. To advertise in the magazines of other clubs. Could members please advise us of suitable, nationally-distributed magazines, such as Forest and Bird Society and other recreation clubs? YOUR PRIVACY WILL BE RESPECTED - no reference will be made to the source of our information.
  6. To investigate setting up a display stand at markets and shows. Ideas for the construction of this would be appreciated.

BEACH LIST

The new 1988 Beach List will be ready in a few months. it contains new sections on N.Z. Nudist Clubs, and south Island localities, as well as a few photos of beaches. From now on, we plan to update it on a continuous basis, and only print as many as are required. Please indicate on your Yellow Form if you would like a copy, and it will be sent when they become available.

VIDEO

Tony Wilson has donated us a copy of the new video "Let's Get It All Off - For Goodness Sake!" The video is available for members to hire at $5. John and Fran invite members to their home after Swimarama on 17 September to view the video. Please ring 565-219 to let them know you are coming, as numbers may have to be limited.

BUMPER STICKERS

Debbie and I, with suggestions from other members, have designed a new car sticker, but it was not favourably received at the AGM. However, I would like to print off a few for my own use, and invite any interested members to order them on your Yellow Form. The colour will be the same as our usual car sticker, yellow with black lettering, and the price is $2.50.

Here it is, ACTUAL SIZE:-

PHOTO COMPETITION

THE PHOTO COMPETITION attracted a total of 22 entries, all colour photographs, from 6 members. Judging was done by those members present at the AGM, and resulted in a clear win to Joyce Turner, of Christchurch with a photograph of herself in the surf, while Carol and Frank Bowers tied for second place with photos of each other in the bush and on the coast. Congratulations to these people, and thanks to all those who supported the competition.

For those who are interested in taking photos or making drawings for next year, what we are looking for to illustrate the Beach List, are pictures of beaches with people on them. Most of this years' entries were pictures of people on beaches. A slight difference in emphasis, but one to keep in mind. Another paint to remember, if submitting photos and drawings for competition, is that a good big picture will usually beat a good small picture. In other words, a postcard size print has to be very good to beat an 8" by 10".

We look forward to an even better competition next year, so I hope you will all have lots of fun sketching, painting or photographing over the coming summer.

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Send us the names and postal addresses of your local council, public library and newspaper, so that we can send them our Information Sheet for their publications and notice-boards.
  2. Can you act as Local Organiser for your area, to arrange some outings and social events?
  3. Write to me, telling me where you go for sunbathing and swimming. Or send in stories about your trips, holidays, and other activities you enjoy.
  4. Send us your views on how the Free Beach Group can be promoted in your area, or the attitudes of the local population and problems you are encountering.

SUMMER DIARY

Please let us know what trips and outings you would like for this season's diary. Some of our trips are poorly attended, so what are we doing wrong? All ideas and suggestions will be welcomed. Especially, if any member would like to lead an outing to one of their favourite places, or host an event, please let me know.

The Free Beach Group seems to be in good heart, and raring to go, which is very encouraging for your committee. New memberships continue to roll in, with 247 units on our mailing list at the moment, more than a lot of other clubs.

So we can look forward to another good year of sunning and socialising, and maybe some challenges, too, just to keep us on our mettle.

Best wishes to you all.

Adrianne
