January - February 1990

Dear Friends,

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We welcome many new members from all over New Zealand, but note with regret that many others have not renewed their subscriptions. There are just over 240 membership units on our new mailing list, slightly up on last year.

The good news is that N.Z. Police have been given a nationwide directive not to harass nude bathers. If you have any problems with the police, please see the Senior Sergeant of the station concerned.

FREE BEACH GROUP OPEN DAY

For the first time ever, we're going to try an advertised Open Day, to be held at St. Leonards Beach on Waitangi Day, Tuesday 6 February. Parking difficulties should deter all but genuine nudists.

SENSIBLE SUNBATHING

A suntan is the body's defence against the effects of radiation. When you sunbathe, melanin pigment is released in the skin, gradually darkening it layer by layer. Some of us darken more than others.

The idea is to cultivate your suntan with the care of an artist working on a masterpiece. Start by going out early or late in the day, every day, if you can. The skin can only respond to about 15 minutes of ultra-violet stimulation at a time. After that, you start to burn. Use sunscreen, especially on sensitive areas, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sit in the shade, put on your clothes, and go home when you have had enough.

SMART COOKIES DO NOT BURN.

Sunburn takes several hours to show up, and the best treatment is to lie in a tub of cold water. Some of us are now reaping the penalty for carelessness in earlier years. We can only watch that our children and grandchildren heed the warnings that were never there for us.

Sunshine is good for you. enjoy it, but respect it.

WEDNESDAY   24   JANUARY   TO   TUESDAY   30   JANUARY   1990

Ngatuhoa is the highlight of the year, and a very popular holiday break for many of us. Members come from all over the North Island - nobody yet from over the water, but the invitation is always there. Do come if you've any excuse at all, we'd love to have you.

Ngatuhoa gives us a week of fun and enjoyment in idyllic surroundings. Bush, streams, waterfalls, all in splendid isolation, although, of course, you can come and go if you need to, by arrangement with the keys!

This year we'll be having a regatta on the canal, organised walks to the waterfalls, our day trip to Papamoa on the Monday, and our Fancy Undress Ball - the theme will be 'Buttons and bows'. We are even hoping to have a spit roast.

Ngatuhoa is a special place for the Free Beach Group, different from anything else you've ever tried. Don't miss it!

COUNTRY CORNER

The Christchurch and Wellington groups of FBG are of to a good start, with lots of members turning up and enjoying their outings. Thank you, Bill and Joyce, for all your hard work, and a special thank you from me, for all the letter-writing this has entailed. Copies of their diaries are included in this newsletter, and travellers passing through over the summer are welcome to call in and join the locals.

Members who sunbathe at Papamoa are the next biggest group, with people coming from as far away as Taupo. Take your flag when you go, it is good advertising, and helps us to recognise each other, as well as being a welcome to visitors.

I would like to thank Brian, of Nelson, for sending in details of two more beaches and a cutting from his local paper (also supplied by Harold of Christchurch) John of Whangarei, for his letter and cartoon (sorry, John, it won't print out in black and white), Bill Main for giving me the idea about conservation, Clarry for postcards, and John Bradey for notes on a new beach. Ed Knowles is very keen to start a group in Marlborough, and has a farmlet with bush and a river where people can camp.

NUDIST FILM OF NEW ZEALAND

During February, Heritage Films will be in New Zealand to make a film about our sun clubs and free beaches. This is the company that made the films "Educating Julie", "Winter in Holland", "Naked Africa", and the "Naked USA" series.

Naturism in New Zealand is seldom featured in overseas articles and reports, so the film will give us superb promotion worldwide.

As yet we have no definite dates. Please keep in touch with committee members or your local organiser for dates and further information.

We will be given a free copy of the film, which will be available to members on video.

CONSERVATION

By and large, I think most members of the free Beach Group would consider themselves 'hedonists', that is, 'those interested in the pursuit of pleasure'. Yet in making life comfortable for ourselves, are we going too far, and destroying the possibility of living at all? The exploitation and pollution of our world is of our own making, by squandering our resources and accepting that other people will do the same. In many small ways, each of us is making things worse.

Conservation groups are trying to slow down and hopefully reverse the damage, and there are a number of things which we, as individuals, can do. Perhaps the most important is to set a good example, by practising conservation in our own lives. We can join conservation groups and write letters to MPs about issues which concern us. And we can discuss conservation with others, and encourage them to help.

There are many organisations to choose from. The Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand Inc., P.0. Box 631, Wellington, is concerned with every issue affecting our own country. The N.Z. Native Forest Restoration Trust, P.O. Box 80-077, Green Bay, Auckland 7 aims to preserve and restore native forests throughout New Zealand. Greenpeace NZ, Private Bag, Wellesley St., Auckland is an international organisation which aims to protect and preserve nature and the environment. Friends of the Earth, P.0. Box 39-065, Auckland West, deals with a wide range of environmental problems. Other addresses may be obtained from Infobank (ask at your local library), or the Citizens' Advice Bureau, or from your nearest Information Centre.

Current issues which may concern us are:-

1. The Greenpeace 'Adopt-a-beach' Campaign, a project to clear rubbish from beaches. To join, phone the Marine Debris Network co-ordinator, 09-776-128 ext 821, or write to the address above.

2. Efforts to preserve the coastal pohutukawas of Northland from destruction by possums and fire. Natural hazards of erosion and disease also afflict the trees. The Native Forest Restoration Trust raises and plants-out young trees.

3. Legislation which threatens to restrict public access to the 'Queen's Chain', a 20m strip of Crown Land alongside lakes, rivers and the coast. The Prime Minister assures us that this is not intended, but the wording of the Conservation Law Reform Sill at present under consideration is causing concern.

Bathing as you like

By Bill Moore

Golden Bay county councillors are turning the other cheek to nude bathing on the county's beaches.

Though letting it all hang out is widely practised in the district, particularly on the Abel Tasman coastline, it is technically breaking a bylaw.

But at their final meeting last week, councillors voted to support a change to permit nude bathing which is being promoted by the Local Government Association.

The association is seeking to change clause 1902-7 in the model general bylaw which says that no one should be in view of anyone else on a beach "unless properly or sufficiently clad".

Acting county clerk Mr Noel Riley said the discussion provoked "a bit of hilarity" at the meeting and he had volunteered to be the beach inspector.

Councillors felt that public attitudes had changed since the model bylaw was formed, and that nude bathing was nowadays acceptable, he said. No one had spoken against the proposed change, and he would be letting the association know that the council lent its support.

Chch News

These are exciting times for pioneers of FBG on the Mainland! Each Saturday or Sunday now sees the yellow Fred Bear flag bravely flying, or firmly planted on some beach in the Christchurch area. It really works! To be part of a compatible group gives us a good feeling of relaxation and security.

Our first few outings are really reconnaissance trips as we test not only the water but the reaction of "textiles" in the vicinity. At long, spacious beaches such as Woodend and Waikuku we can easily distance ourselves; but at Tumbledown Bay or Camp Bay, which are popular picnic spots, we have simply parked ourselves, as unobtrusively as possible, in a group flanked by our guardian angel (Fred Bear) and hoped for the best. So far, fine! We trust that "au naturel" will soon be regarded as a normal option, as it is in Europe.

Saturdays or Sundays? We've made a compromise. Saturdays for the more populated spots, Sundays for the others. So please check the dates on our Christchurch Diary. We have to find out as we go along. One thing we are learning is that plans have to be made months in advance, otherwise they don't appear in the newsletter.

As an informal, do-it-yourself group, we are on the look-out for new ideas, venues or offers of hospitality. If you know of any suitable beaches or picnic spots, please give details to Gerald or me.

Enclosed for the Christchurch group is an up-dated list of local FBG members which will enable you to keep in touch in case of last-minute arrangements. When you turn up for an outing, it is well worthwhile to have your own yellow Fred Bear flag or T shirt. This way we can't miss each other.
