JANUARY - FEBRUARY 1991

Merry Christmas Everybody,

Well, despite a dull day weatherwise, the combined Free Beach/Auckland Sun Club beach day at Orpheus Bay was enjoyed by everybody who turned up. At least ten members of our group continued on to the barbecue on the club grounds afterwards. Many thanks to the A.S.C. for their hospitality and for the use of their facilities.

The committee would like to thank Norman Antolak for his help while he served on the committee. Norman has decided to return to the USA and we wish him well. Perhaps we could get a report on the beach scene there Norman?

Thanks also go to the person who sent in the clipping of the nude record shop promotion (see later). Perhaps HMV should take note!

Have a happy holiday season and don't forget that the sun is at its strongest this time of year so be careful. Wear a hat and use plenty of sun cream.

DIRECTORY: If you chose to be in the directory you should have received your copy with this newsletter. If you haven't received it, please let us know so that we can get a copy to you and include your entry in an update if necessary.

NGATUHOA: a unique experience (see Doug Ball's write up about last year's trip in September's NZ Naturist) and bookings are now coming in - especially from the lower North Island. Please fill in all information on the booking slip and don't forget to KEEP the rest of the information handy; you WILL need it. Just a few reminders:

CHECK that you have enough food and petrol before leaving. Don't forget your sun cream, sun hats and insect repellant. Please note entry times carefully. We suggest that you wear your T-shirts or carry a club flag or towel so that we can easily recognise you. Please keep an eye out for anybody coming for the first time.

BOATING IN QUEENSLAND: Frank and Carol Bowers are considering a trip to Whitsunday Island and environs, off the coast of Queensland, in June or July of 1991. They intend to hire a "bare" boat (no crew) which they will crew and would like two other couples to go with them for three or four weeks. Share all expenses and work.

Contact: Frank or Carol (0843) 77413.

[Page 2]

BOATING IN MERCURY BAY: Mark and Diane Collins have a small launch in the Mercury Bay area that they could use to take people out for day trips or camping. They say that a lot of beaches in that area are only accessible by boat and so are ideal.

Contact: Mark or Diane (WHIT) 0843-64656 for details.

DANNEVIRKE: Our local organiser in Dannevirke, Hugh Bowles, would like to correspond with anyone who enjoys nude boat fishing, surfcasting, snorkelling etc. He stays in a caravan at Herbertville beach whenever possible, and will be there this year from Christmas until the end of January. Clothes are rarely needed. Anyone interested can write to Hugh at 33 Thyra Street, Dannevirke. Details can also be got from Fran (09) 565-219.

URETITI CAMP: The trip to Uretiti at Labour Weekend went off well. The weather held and we had about fifteen people camp or call in to see us, some from as far away as Levin. Unfortunately the public did not show the same interest in the Open Weekend, but perhaps they just take Uretiti for granted as a nudist beach. The fish were biting and some of us got started on our suntans. Mostly a time to relax and get away from it all. Further to our last newsletter, barbecues and enclosed fires seem to be acceptable but ground fires are not. We are looking forward to going back at Christmas.

Directions: From State Highway 1, 6km North of Waipu and 1km North of the golf course, turn right into the Uretiti Beach Recreation Reserve camping grounds. Water taps, flush toilets, cold showers, fire places (see above) NO dogs. Supplies at Ruakaka, 3km further North. Contact: John or Fran 565-219 before Christmas.

Raw record in heated store sale promotion

MELBOURNE. - Temperatures soared and clothes were shed as 60 nude customers took advantage of a city record store's second annual nude day.

Police were called to Gaslight Records, in Bourke St., to control crowds eager to take advantage of the store's promotional calendar offer of a free recording for the first naked customers to walk through its doors.

The promotion coincided with Melbourne's hottest October day for 13 years, with the temperature peaking at 33°, its highest level since October 1977.

Gaslight Records manager Pascal Brogan said the number of men and women disc-seeking nudists was about equal. He said business boomed and, despite the police presence, there was no trouble.

Mr Brogan said his store supplied 60 free records today, 40 up on the first Nude Day last year. - NZPA-AAP

SAUNA:

The Sunday night saunas will be continuing throughout Christmas so if you fancy a "hot time in the old town" join us at:

PLACE:

Alladin's Bathhouse, 433 Richmond Road. Grey Lynn.

TIME:

Every Sunday from 5pm onward.

COST:

$6.50, includes free coffee, tea and fruit drinks.

SOCIAL NIGHTS:

Second Sunday every month: 13th January, 10th February. BYO and a plate.

RESTAURANT DINNERS:

Don't forget we occasionally go off after the sauna to wine and dine in a city restaurant.

Contact: John or Fran 565-219.

SWIMMERAMA: Were still awaiting the final outcome of what will be available after the renovations, but a preview has shown that the new arrangement might present difficulties as there are large expanses of glass in several areas where people could be moving around. We should hopefully have more information for the next newsletter but in the meantime if anybody can suggest an alternate venue we would love to hear from you.

DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE: 3rd January - Local organisers please note!
Your March - April newsletter is due out end of February.

Hi there, Everybody,

Your Roving Reporter has already been in action, with a quick trip up north over Labour Weekend, to check out two new locations for us. I called in at Uretiti too: as calm and peaceful as ever - not many people there this year.

WHALE BAY is an attractive little beach just north of Matapouri. Drive east from Whangarei, through Tutukaka and 1 km past Matapouri. At the top of the hill there is a large car park with a sign "Whale Bay Reserve", and a metalled track 10 minutes down to the beach. It faces north, with a bush-clad hill behind it, so, no sun until late morning. Fishing off the rocks, sheltered for swimming, and lovely clear water. Store and petrol at Matapouri.

From here we cruised across to Herekino - Hi Clarry and Gwen - great to see you, and thanks for your letters. Clarry's favourite sunbathing spot is OWHATA. From Herekino, drive out along the road to Whangape, turn right into Owhata Road and park at the end. Walk out to the Herekino Heads. Take your fishing rod, and call in for Clarry - he lives in the white house high on the hill opposite the pub, and he'd like some company.

A new member suggests Muriwai North, but one trip over that bone-shaking road is enough for make me take it off the list. Sorry, Peter.

I thought our last newsletter was tops - congratulations to our newsletter gang for a magnificent start, and thanks also to everybody who sends in their bit. A pat on the back all round!

On a more sombre note, LOCK UP YOUR CAR THOROUGHLY when you go to the beach, and don't leave ANYTHING valuable inside. Sadly, it's a sign of the times. But don't let that put you off. The sun and the sea beckon. Pack your sunscreen, your hat, your towel and a drink, and GO. The more nude bodies there are on our beaches, the more acceptable, and fashionable, nudity will become. It's up to us.

Adrianne

New Plymouth

JANUARY - FEBRUARY 1991

Happy New Year! May we have plenty of sunny days from now on. We have plenty of interesting nudist activities planned for these two months, and I hope you will all enjoy them. The nude tramp in the Pouakai Ranges will be a great experience, and I can especially recommend the week at Ngatuhoa Lodge in the Kaimai Ranges. It is everything a nudist holiday should be. Beautiful surroundings, freedom to go nude all day, plenty to see and do, and a wonderful group of people to enjoy your holiday with. See you there!

TAPUAE, SUNDAY 6 JANUARY

Most of you know the way to Tapuae, now, but for any newcomers who don't, just give me a ring and I will give you directions. The same goes for anyone needing a ride. Bring a picnic lunch and stay for the afternoon. High tide is at 3 pm, but that's never a problem here.

WEST BEACH. SUNDAY, 13 JANUARY

From New Plymouth, head out along Breakwater Road towards the Power Station. At the sign 'Lookouts', turn left into Ngamotu Rd, then right into Centennial Drive. Continue 2 km to just past Rangitake Drive and park by the sign 'Paritutu Centennial Park'. Descend to beach, cross the small stream to the west, and walk along 1 km of sandy beach until you hit rocks. That's where you will find Fred Bare.

SOCIAL EVENING, GAMES,SPA, SAUNA, OR VIDEO WEDNESDAY 16 JANUARY

Venue to be decided. Let the organiser have your ideas about what you would like to do, and where you would like to go.

NUDE TRAMP TO BELL'S,FALLS, SUNDAY 20 JANUARY

This is our 'special' event for the month, and hopefully the weatherman will be kind. We will drive to North Egmont nice and early, walk up the summit track a short distance and branch off to Holly Hut and Bell's Falls. The mountain scenery is spectacular, and given good weather, this will be a fantastic day. A fairly long tramp, but not too strenuous. Wear sensible shoes (running shoes are ideal) and carry a parka or coat of some kind in case there is a sudden change in the weather. You will need your lunch and a drink. Don't forget your sun screen, sunhat, and sunglasses. There should be ample opportunity to strip off and enjoy the sun and fresh air.

All meet at 16 Selwyn St at 7 am. If you need a ride, give me a call on 33-393. If the weather is doubtful phone me after 6 am.

If, as sometimes happens, the mountain weather is unsuitable but the beach is OK, we will go to Tapuae instead. High tide 1 pm.

FBG ANNUAL MEET AT NGATUHOA, WED 23 TO TUE 29 JAN

If you don't go on this fantastic holiday you will be sorry! And if you haven't sent in your booking slip by 14 January you will be too late!

TAPUAE, SUNDAY 27 JANUARY

For those who cannot go to Ngatuhoa, this is the place to meet your friends. High tide at 8 am.

TARANAKI NATURISTS CLUB, SUNDAY 3 FEBRUARY

Swimming, sunning, and beating the TNCs at miniten and volleyball! Bring your lunch and some insect repellent, and be prepared for a great day. If you need a ride up, let me know. If the weather is doubtful listen to Radio Taranaki at 9am for a possible cancellation.

LOWER: PITONE ROAD, SUNDAY 10 FEBRUARY

Drive down State Highway 45 for about 5 minutes past Oakura. Shortly after the Okato Dairy Factory, turn right down Lower Timaru Road. About 2 km down this road take the left fork into Greenwood Road which leads down to the sea and crosses a little white bridge. There is plenty of room to park just past this bridge. Walk back past this bridge and north up the beach until you find us. If you are first there, just pick a good spot, strip off, and wait for the rest of us. High tide is 8 am, so come as early as you like.

AHU AHU ROAD, SUNDAY 17 FEBRUARY

Drive past Oakura for about 3 minutes, turn down Ahu Ahu Rd, and continue to the sea. Take the left fork and go another 100 metres before parking. Look for us just over a low sand dune where the beach is widest. This is a lovely spot, with plenty of safe beach and some pools for the children to play in when the tide goes out. High tide at noon. Come for the afternoon.

SOCIAL EVENING, WEDNESDAY 20 FEBRUARY

Venue to be decided. Word of mouth, or phone me.

WEEKEND NUDE TRAMP UP MANGAHAO RIVER, FRI 22 TO SUN 24 FEBRUARY

This is an easy valley trip into the Tararua Ranges. We will spend Friday night at the Palmerston North Sun Club, drive to the road head, and tramp up the Mangahao as far as we please and make camp. We can make this trip as easy or as hard as the group desires, and there will be ample opportunity to tramp or swim in the nude. On Sunday we will wander back down the valley and drive home. Nudists from Wellington, Wanganui and Palmerston North will be invited to join us on this trip, which should be a most enjoyable experience. Contact me for details.

Doug Ball.
