JULY - AUGUST 1991

Hello friends,

This will be the last newsletter produced by the current newsletter committee as we are at the time of year when we have a change of people - Yes it's AGM time again. Only this year you're getting double value for money because, to accommodate a change in the rules - see later, we are going to have an EXTRA-ordinary General Meeting in addition to the Annual General Meeting so please be there on time or you may miss all the excitement! Our PHOTO COMPETITION will be held at 2pm before we start the AGM. The display last year was excellent. Details and an entry form is included with this newsletter.

The current newsletter committee will not be able to produce the newsletter next year so we are definitely going to need some more volunteers to help out. In the mean time we hope that this last year's newsletters have not been too dull and have helped to keen you informed of what has been happening within the group.

ACCOMMODATION: We recommend the Waiwera Thermal Caravan Park for those who wish to stay overnight and drive home the next day. Caravans on Site are available for hire at $10 - $20 per person. The Park has full motor camp facilities, with a hot spa pool, small heated swimming pool and a store. Petrol pump on the main road. The address is: Waiwera Thermal Caravan Park, PO Box 35, Waiwera, phone 0942-65-270.

EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING: The EGM will take place just before the AGM to consider the following changes to rules as suggested by the Chairman Tony Wilson.

1. To replace 2(a) under objects which reads at present as:

To promote the establishment of legal "Free Beaches". That is, public places where all those wishing to do so may swim and sunbathe without clothes of any kind.

With 2(a):

To promote, encourage and support the practice of recreational nudity in public p1aces when appropriate and desirable, such nudity being at the discretion of the individuals participating.

Reasons:

With better appreciation of legal position of nudity in New Zealand committees of the Group in the past ten or so years have not sought "Legal" beaches as in essence all beaches are already FREE. The amended main object as above more accurately reflects the "broader brush" thrust of the Group's activities in recent past and foreseeable future.

2. To Change 7(a) under Management from:

The business of the group shall be managed and controlled by a Committee consisting of a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and Committee members...

To:

The business of the group shall be managed and controlled by a Committee consisting of a President (who shall act as Chairman whenever such a position is required), Secretary, Treasurer and Committee members...

Reasons:

This is really simply "cosmetic". For various reasons People both within and outside of the Group always assume the Committee is headed by a President and refer to the Chairman as President both in spoken and written word. This amendment simply keeps the record straight.

3. To replace the word Chairman with President in: Rule 8(a) - three times, Rule 14 - once.

FBG COMMITTEE: We are looking for new faces for the committee for next year so if you'd like to get involved and have some say in how YOUR club is run, give us a call and possibly come along to the last meeting before the AGM (Early in August).

FERNLAND'S HOT POOLS NIGHT: This was greatly enjoyed by about 80 people of all ages. About 20 Free Beach members joined host Rotota Sun Club and friends from Bay of Plenty Sun Club, Waikato Outdoor Society and Supporters Group.

The day was fine and the weather warm. Children played while others talked and caught up with old friends and sampled the delights from the pool tuck shop. It was a great way to spend 4 hours that seemed to pass all too quickly.

WINTER BARBECUE: John and Fran will be hosting a Free Beach barbecue on Saturday 22nd June to celebrate the return of the sun after the winter solstice. There are still some places available if you are interested. Those members who have been to a barbecue here have had an enjoyable time. Please ring Fran on new Phone number 576-5219 if you wish to go. Bring your own meat and a salad or something to share. Time - any time after 4pm.

BEACH LISTS: Thanks go to Bill Baine for suggesting a wording change to the beginning of the beach list - see Wellington newsletter. Jackie has informed us that she will be using most of this for future issues.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO TAKE BETTER PHOTOGRAPHS?

Member Martin Barriball, a professional photographer of wide experience, has noticed at previous AGM Photograph Competitions that very few members are getting good results from their cameras and the $20 odd for film and processing. Martin is semi-retired now and is seeking interest in offering lessons to groups of Members and friends or individuals aimed at teaching keen photographers to get better results, not only on the beaches but at our various other activities or at home or wherever travels take you in the world.

Expensive camera gear is not a requirement and advice will be given in choice of gear if required. Martin was for many years a movie camera man with the National Film Unit, so will also offer basic movie making skills for those with videos - many of the aspects of still photography also applies to movie work.

There will have to be a nominal fee for a minimum of each 2 hour lesson, but worth it for the better use of your camera and film. Every shot costs money and it mounts up when the shots that are no good pile up in the trash can. Martin will have some examples of his work at the AGM and you will be able to talk with him but interested members can write to Martin Barriball, 21 Kaurimu Rise, Titirangi.

Indicate your preference for group or solo tuition, what subjects interest you, what camera gear you have. The 10 classes will only be available initially in the greater Auckland Area, but visitors to Ngatuhoa may be able to enjoy a basic course of lessons while there. As well the possibility of concentrated weekend courses at other North Island centres Tauranga, Rotorua etc. would be considered if interest was shown.

PHOTO and DRAWING COMPETITION

We would like to have more drawings in our competition this year, as the photographs are not printing out very well in the beach list. A selection of nice drawings, humorous or otherwise, could make the book much livelier. I am sure there are lots of budding artists out there. Give it a go!

1. The topic is "Out With The Free Beach Group".

2. Entries must be suitable for illustrating our beach list. Photographs of recognisable people will no longer be printed in the list.

3. Entries which have won prizes in previous FBG competitions are not eligible.

4. Any number of entries may be submitted. Make sure you put your name, address and telephone number on the back of each entry. There is no entry fee.

5. Please pack your entries carefully. The Free Beach Group accepts no responsibility for entries lost or damaged in transit.

6. All entries must be received by us no later than Friday, 16 August, 1991.

7. PHOTOGRAPHS must be unmounted and no larger than 10" x 8". Prizes for photographs will be $15 first, $10 second and $5 third.

8. DRAWINGS should be black and white, and may be mounted. Prizes for drawings will be $20 first, $15 second and $10 third.

9. Prizes will be awarded in each section according to the number of entries received. Judging is by popular vote.

10. The competition is open to all members of the Free Beach Group.

OUR NAME

In our last newsletter Bill Baine suggests changing our name. I changed my own name a few months ago, back to the one I started with when I was a kid. Changing the way I think of myself is more difficult. Inside, part of me is still Adrianne.

I like our Free Beach Group name. It doesn't label us as 'nudists', a word that evokes an image of high tin fences, sniggering, and smutty cartoons. Nudity is a socially sensitive issue, and I am probably not the only one who likes to be naked, but would rather not be called a 'nudist'.

The Free Beach Group has always been clothing-optional, accepting supporters as well as active members, so we don't split families with differing points of view. This is one of our strengths. And what of the other benefits of belonging to FBG? The word 'nudist' is too limiting.

'Free', meaning 'clothes-free', is used overseas to refer to clothing-optional beaches. No sun club has ever used 'free' in their name, so far as I know. I like the word 'free' for its wider meanings. Something that is free costs nothing, and is available to all for the taking. To be free to do what you want to do, you must take responsibility for the outcome of your actions. Freedom, and the responsibility that goes with it, is a worthy aspiration, and a challenge for the future.

We are a 'group', a 'number of people belonging together', according to the Oxford dictionary. We meet on the 'beach', and hopefully, we spread the message that being 'free' of clothing makes us responsible.

Our name says exactly what we are, the 'Free Beach Group'.

Adrianne

P.S. Debbie's idea for a new name is "The Ecdysiast Society',
meaning 'those who uncover themselves'.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Those of us who read the last Wellington Newsletter will have had our brain cells stimulated by Bill's thoughts about the name of our organisation, and since I will be far away (absorbing the sun's rays and some European culture) while you are having the AGM, I would like to take this opportunity to air my views on the matter.

Firstly, I must agree 100% with Bill that the once-appropriate name is now a misnomer. We no longer campaign for "Free Beaches", only for freedom on the beach. Nor do we confine our activities to the beaches, as Bill has clearly pointed out. The word "Beach" in our name is not necessary.

Secondly, we are rapidly developing into an association of localised groups, scattered around the country - we are no longer a single group based in Auckland. So the word "Group" in our name is misleading.

Thirdly, we do not want a name which suggests that we are just another sun club. If we wanted that I guess most of us would have already joined a nudist club, with all the restrictions and responsibilities which such membership must involve. We are the Free Nudists of New Zealand, so it would be good to retain the word "Free".

Lastly, what do we all have in common? We are all nudists. So let's have "Nudist" in our name. Why not change the name of the national body to "N.Z.Free Nudists Inc." as Bill suggests, and use names like "Free Nudists, Auckland", or "Free Nudists, Wellington" for our local branches?

There's no time like the present to make improvements, so I hope someone will move to change our name at the coming AGM. If I were to be here in August I would be happy to lend my support to such a move, but since I shall be away, the best I can do is to write this letter.

Yours in nudism,

Adrianne

Doug Ball.

We are urged in our latest newsletter to give some consideration to the desirability of a name change for the Free Beach Group. While having no very strong feelings on the matter I rather like the informal 'ring' of the present name. However I often wonder why the founding members chose the name of FRED for the famous bear - really his name should have been NICHOLAS!

New Plymouth Newsletter - July - August 1991

MID-WINTER MEETING

Now that the days are beginning to lengthen, we can begin to look forward to the warm days of summer when we can again cast off our cares with our clothes and enjoy the outdoors "au naturel". Although we increased our membership a little last summer, we still don't have enough Taranaki people sharing and enjoying our way of life.

To help us to get off to a roaring start next summer, and attract new members, we need to organise an interesting programme. And since we will need to publish our programme in the September-October Newsletter, we will need to have it finalised in July. To this end Peggy and I are inviting all New Plymouth FBG members to our home (at 16 Selwyn St. New Plymouth) on the evening of Wednesday 17 July. We will discuss our programme for next summer and have a viewing of Naked Down Under.

Come to this evening if you possibly can. Please give us a phone call to say you are coming, (33-393). A plate for supper would be appreciated. We really look forward to seeing you all, especially those who we haven't met yet.

If for some reason you can't attend on that evening, please phone with your suggestions for venues and activities.

Doug Ball

New Plymouth Organiser.

VIDEO NEWS

Now that Naked Down Under has finally arrived, David Ball's documentary of the New Zealand nudist scene has proved very popular.

In January 1990 David arrived with his Danish companion, Lene, to begin a five week tour of our nudist clubs, resorts, and beaches. Peggy and I were fortunate enough to have the task of guiding them from place to place and introducing them to our nudist friends.

Because of the limited time available, it was quite impossible to visit every club in the country, in fact we didn't even manage to fit in all the places on our initial itinerary. Nevertheless, we saw so much and got so much excellent material that David was considering making two videos, and finally decided to make only one, but to increase its length from the usual 60 minutes to 80 minutes.

Everywhere we went we were welcomed by the clubs, and were very pleased with the willingness with which people agreed to be photographed. I don't think we would have had the same response ten years ago, which goes to show how far nudism has come down the path towards openness and public acceptance.

Naked Down Under is a superb aid for the promotion of our lifestyle. Clubs are already using it to introduce prospective members to nudism, and finding it very effective. We have had unsolicited letters praising its content and photographic quality.

The Nude in Nature is a brand new video with a difference. Quite unlike any other we have seen so far, it is an "art gallery" of still colour studies of the nude female body made by the Australian artist Brian Reid. 400 photographs merge into each other at the rate of one every 8 seconds, with no commentary, only quiet background music (which I found slightly superfluous, and which can be turned down or off if you don't like it!). You will either love this video, or hate it! Some will complain that the photographs are "nude" but not "nudist" (some of the models display tan lines), but in this more tolerant age this should not really be an issue.

Personally, I would prefer Brian to have included more studies of men (there are only two or three), but since most of his work is dedicated to the female form, it is better that we have this video of beautiful young women than no video at all.

Nude photography (as opposed to "nudist" photography) is an art form which has been with us since the invention of the camera, and most photographers would like to photograph the nude but do not have access to willing models. We nudists have wonderful opportunities to make figure studies in natural surroundings, and perhaps this new video will inspire more nudist photographers to work in this area.

WELLINGTON NEWSLETTER

for JULY & AUGUST 1991

REPORT ON WELLINGTON F.B.G. GENERAL MEETING

A general meeting of the Wellington local Free Beach Group Inc. was held at Grant and Marilyn's place on Friday 31 May 1991.

PRESENT: Bill, Clark, Geoff, Grant, Henry, Ian, John C, John S, Marilyn, Odette, Peter, Stuart, Troy. There were 13 apologies.

Grant opened and chaired the meeting and introduced us to 'the horn'. He said it would be used where necessary. Odette was appointed the Minute Secretary for the meeting. Grant said "no long motions" as they would make a mess on the carpet.

LOCAL ORGANISER'S REPORT (BILL): In view of Grant's time limitation of 3-5 minutes, Bill gave a "brief" run-down of the various venues used by the group and last summer's highlights. He suggested that the coming summer's calendar stay much the same as last year. The largest number of members on any one beach day was just on 30 at Peka Peka on Sunday 10th March. Bill also reported among other things that about 30 FBG members (along with the Wellington Sun Club people) were attending the monthly swim nights this winter - a real success. At the conclusion of Bill's spiel, Grant announced that he had run for 10 minutes and 47 seconds!

MATTERS ARISING FROM Bill's REPORT: Access to Peka Peka beach was discussed at length and it was agreed that written directions to Peka Peka’s new location should go to Auckland (then Adrianne!) to be put in the future editions of the FBG booklet "Free Beaches". There was also discussion on whether we should move our site in response to the encroachment of textiles. Marilyn suggested that when we find a suitable site at the beaches attended, that we stick to them and not move. Endorsed by the meeting.

GENERAL BUSINESS: There was a general discussion about the needs of the group. It was generally agreed that the group was short of female membership and that efforts should be made to give women more influence in the group's affairs. There was felt to be a need to work out ways of attracting more female participants/members. It was noted that at present men have definitely dominated. The group unanimously agreed that the outside contact person be a woman. This is because generally it was felt that a woman could not only relate well to new members of both genders, but that with a group of this nature a woman would be a much more effective and credible public relations person. Bill advised that, when dealing with peoples' enquiries into the group, care had to be exercised in establishing the genuineness of the enquiries, as some people's attitudes could damage the group. Grant brought up the scenario of a member behaving in an undesirable manner and the question of who deals with it. After some discussion it was suggested that where possible the group as a whole should decide on a suitable plan of action. If necessary the local members' contact and/or outsiders' contact could be asked to speak to the member concerned and/or take action to have the person's membership cancelled. Bill mentioned that if someone joins the group for the wrong reasons, they don't usually stay because they feel uncomfortable. In any event, there is a clause in the FBG constitution which provides for the cancellation of membership a result of undesirable behaviour (see cl. 3(3)). It was suggested and passed unanimously that all members receive a copy of the FBG constitution. Odette is arranging this.

It was noted that we are a close group socially which was good. We have people of all ages and backgrounds etc, and are steadily growing. Troy, one of our young members, suggested that we try to entertain children at the different venues and that he would be happy to undertake this task with close liaison with other members of the group if necessary.

APPOINTMENT OF LOCAL KEY PERSONS: Local Contact for Outsiders/public Relations Person - Marilyn. Local Contact within the Group and with Auckland - Bill. Back-up Contact for above - Marilyn. Local Fixture Organiser & Calendar - Bill. Local Newsletter Organisers - Odette and Peter. Young Persons' Leader/Spokesperson - Troy. Venue/Locations "Overseers": - Persons were appointed for 8 venues.

In conclusion Grant expressed on behalf of all members, warm appreciation for the sterling work done by Bill in leading and fostering the group these last few years. In a sense, these changes have been precipitated by the increasing size of our group and an awareness of the need to "spread the load". Hopefully, Bill's phone will now be given a chance to cool down, at least in the winter months! We're aware that we are embarking upon a bit of an experiment and that roles may well change, but we have at least made a start and optimism prevails.

On a concluding note, we have all realised how wonderful it is to have "big brother" in Auckland doing a lot of the administrative work for us, and would not wish to disturb this happy arrangement for the world!

In the Coptic version of the Gospel of Thomas (sometimes called "the 5th Gospel" as the whole of it has now been found intact), there is this passage, which could well be a charter for naturists:

"When you strip yourselves without being ashamed, when you take off your clothes and lay them at your feet like little children and trample on them: Then you will become children of Him who is loving, and you will have no more fear". - Thomas: 42
