Forum Joyce Fleming's article on the possibility of a name change from "Group" to "Association" was accompanied by seven reasons for her proposal and she politely invited all members to join in the discussion. Every member has the right to express an opinion, and to expect a courteous reply by anyone wishing to express a contrary view. Patrick Simmon's letter to Forum contributed nothing to the discussion on the proposal nor was it a reasoned response. He uses phrases like "regardless of what Joyce Fleming has to say"! One cannot disregard the opinion of others, solely on the grounds that you don't like it. Whether you agree or not has nothing to do with it. Patrick himself fails to provide any arguments to support his view and the view of "those of us who care", He says further "who cares what any Aussie thinks or does". Well I do. Here again he shows his intolerance. I care, because I believe in goodwill and co-operation with the Aussies, and of course among our own members. Patrick asks "Why should we consider offering (Fred Bear), OUR identity to the Aussies who don't want to use him anyway?" If they don't want to use him, no harm done. If they do "Goodo" (sic). As an international symbol clothes optional or Free Beach, it would be a good thing like internationally recognised traffic signals and road signs which are universal. As a closing note relevant or not, I too "have never been ashamed of my membership"... or my nudity. Should I ever meet Patrick Simmons I trust that we will be able to discuss any differences, with mutual respect. May I wish him, and all other Free Beacher's many happy days in the sun this summer. Kevin Gdanitz Remember If your bum is bare, please cover the chair.

FREE BEACH GROUP Inc Annual General Meeting 2pm, 25 September 1999 Rewa Rewa School Hall Newlands, Wellington AGENDA Opening Remarks The quorum for the Annual General Meeting is 20 members present or represented by proxy. A member who is not able to be present in person may appoint the Chair of the Meeting, or any other member who will be present, to act as their proxy. A Proxy form is included with this newsletter. Postal Ballot All un-opened ballot envelopes received by 25 July 1999, were forwarded to the NZNF Secretary to be counted. A total of 104 voting papers were received, and the results for each motion was: For 92 Therefore the motions were carried. There were no invalid votes. Thus the mission of the Group has been amended to: To promote clothes-free recreation and the naturist lifestyle. As we prepare to celebrate our first 25 years, it may be timely to reflect on our original mission: To promote the establishment of legal "Free Beaches". That is, public places were all those wishing to do so may swim and sunbathe without clothes of any kind. It is now not uncommon to witness nude swimming and sunbathing at public beaches and rivers. That is why it is now Free Beach Group policy to oppose the designation of "legal Free Beaches", as this would inhibit clothes-free activities elsewhere. |

A Get Well Message to Bert
Bert Risley has been very sick in Christchurch Hospital for a month, and is now recovering from a serious operation.
We all wish Bert a speedy return to good health, and his many activities.
Keep smiling Bert, the sun and surf awaits you!
Bert would like to thank all those who have sent their good wishes.
SI Vice President's Annual Report The year 1998-9 has been the busiest and most successful to date for the mainland group. We have been blessed with fine weather for most of our summer outings, beach days and camps. Our winter sessions at the Burwood Hydro Centre have been incredibly popular with numbers ranging from 30 to 55 people attending. Despite the low charge of $2.50 per adult (which includes refreshments) we now have a profit of $250 in the kitty which can be used for the benefit of the group and/or for future promotions/donations as directed by our members. An informal general meeting was held at 41 Muir Ave. on Sunday 4 July for the presentation of accounts and to discuss plans for the forthcoming summer season. We enjoyed a delicious pot luck lunch and we watched a re-play of the Nude Zealand" TV programme and a slide show by Volker. During the past year, we have responded to twenty-one enquiries by mailing out brochures, etc. Current membership of the Canterbury group consists of 48 units, that is, 65 adults and several children. With our clothes-optional policy, we encourage members to bring along relatives and friends to all our indoor and outdoor activities. Our group is a particularly friendly one with ages ranging from eight months to the eighties, and everyone caring for each other and keeping an eye out to help where necessary. Special efforts have been made this year to promote FBG: • by sending in articles, poems and photos for publication in the NZ Naturist magazine • by contributing to the "Sweetwaters" display • by mounting a special promotion & display of pictures, posters and brochures at the University of Canterbury during Orientation Week (early March) |
• This was followed by a live interview on Student Radio (RDU) • Our Canty. website illustrating local conditions, beaches, activities, etc. We are especially grateful to the South Canterbury Sun Club for the summer and Easter camps which were most enjoyable, and which we now look forward to every year! Thanks also to Chris & Sandra Arnold, to Nigel & Hilda Copus, to Aoraki Naturally and to Pineglades for their hospitality. Thanks also to Kevin Gdanitz and Gordon Sim who have taken the trouble to write articles, to all those who have helped by supplying photographs and to those who are willing to be photographed To Volker for preparing the website and picture gallery, to Don Carnielo who helped me with the last swim night, also to many others for their loyalty and support. This is beginning to sound like an "Oscar's award!! I have been local organiser - off and on - for almost twenty years, which has been very rewarding, especially since I met Bertie at the beach in 1989! Unfortunately, as I write, Bertie is seriously ill in the Christchurch Public Hospital and about to undergo a major operation. I have "resigned" my position on the National Committee of the Free Beach Group but will try to continue as local organiser for the forthcoming season. I have great confidence in Chris Arnold and Lester Pulley as our South Island representatives on the National Committee which now meets by means of phone link. I have faith that all matters which arise will be considered in an objective manner and that all members be treated with respect. The existence of an organisation such as ours depends on friendship and goodwill - and, may I add, kindness. Joyce Fleming |

The call for nominations for the 1999/2000 National Committee advertised in the last newsletter was very disappointing. Only two nominations were received!
This year, our membership has seen a healthy increase, and there is much to look forward to as we plan for the new millennium.
To achieve what is ahead, we need more nominations.
The National Committee comprises eight members, including:
President
Secretary
Treasurer
Committee members
A Nomination form is enclosed to make it easy.
Please include a short personal profile of the nominee to make it easy for voters.
Nominations must be received by 30 June 1999, so that ballot papers can be sent out with the July/August newsletter (which wile be delayed slightly).
The Free Beach Group needs your support. Please shop around for nominations, or ask someone to nominate you. Don't delay!

Following a successful 1999 Annual General Meeting, it is time to renew our subscriptions.
Enclosed is a Renewal form, and Application to be included in the Directory of Members.
Renewal form
The sticker on the Renewal form shows the information we have on our database. Please check it. Amend and/or supply any missing information. Your occupation is a requirement of the Incorporated Societies Act.
If you are a new member, and received a credit note when you joined, be sure you include it with your renewal (which will be only $10 if accompanied by your credit note).

If you were in the last Directory of Members, we have attached the information for you to check, amend or add to.

President's Report The Free Beach Group has enjoyed another great year, our membership has experienced a significant increase, and we welcome our new members. Social highlights have included Ngatuhoa, Labour weekend and Easter at Rotota, Summer Camp at South Canterbury Sun Club, Kapiti "naturist nature visit", Kuku Beach 30 year celebration, Uruti Point camps, swim nights at Cannons Creek Aquatic Centre and Burwood Pool; visits to Rapere (HB Outdoor Leisure Club), Pineglades; beach days at Breaker Bay, Taylors Mistake and elsewhere. And all the other formal and informal activities enjoyed by members, but not shared in the newsletter. We are indebted to Joyce Fleming and the few who have shared their adventures in the newsletter and the NZ Naturist The newsletter is the place to tell us about your enjoyment of clothes-free recreation, and new locations. While Wellington and Christchurch members continue to arrange regular events, and have good participation, it is disappointing that members in other regions are not arranging social activities. Ted Lidgard (BoP) and Ed Knowles (Marlborough / Nelson) have had very disappointing responses to their programs. All it takes is a few dates on the calendar, and the effort to participate. Our web site has been upgraded, with more information and pictures. An important section has been included with some legal notes provided as a guide to clothes-free recreation in NZ. New Zealand is fortunate in having a relaxed attitude to nudity, as evidenced by frequent examples on TV3's Target program. Examples include the landlord who expressed his right to paint the tenants house "in the nude" because he was a "naturalist". And David Russell of Consumer ventured the opinion that the police would not be interested in any complaint on those grounds. As requested by the 1998 AGM, our Constitution has been reviewed, and the Committee decided that there was no need to make changes. Our Mission statement has been revised to reflect the current terminology adopted by the clothes-free movement. At Ngatuhoa 2000 we celebrate Fred Bears 25th Birthday. The Free Beach Group was formed in 1975, and registered as an incorporated society in 1977. Fred Bear was adopted as our logo from a type-metal block out of Robin Hoare's printing business. Someone carefully touched-up the image to provide us with our identity. Robin was our founding Chairman, and we welcome Robin back onto our National Committee. Robin has sent me another Fred Bear image which I have "massaged" to match our Fred for use on our Ngatuhoa 2000 promotions. I would like to record my "thank you" to members of the National Committee, and to those who have organised events for our pleasure. In particular, Ted Lidgard for his dedication as Ngatuhoa camp commandant, Joyce Fleming, and Barry Marten for the work he has done in the background attending to membership records. Each newsletter comes to you thanks to the faithful Wellington members who are ever willing to collate, fold and "stuff' the envelopes. I would like to thank the Sun Clubs that have extended an invitation to Free Beach members particularly Rotota, South Canterbury, Pineglades, and HB Outdoor Leisure Club. John Groombridge PRESIDENT |

Treasurer's Report
It is a pleasure to report that 1999/99 has been another successful year for the Free Beach Group Inc. Income from subscriptions increased as a result of increase membership, donations and interest were less than last year. Income from the sale of Fred Bear items was up on last year. Income from the the sale of Fred bear items was up on last year. Some expenses have increased compared with last year.
As a result, our income exceeded our Expenses by $1785, which, although less than last year, which I believe is a satisfactory situation. I propose that our subscriptions remain at $20 per membership for another year.
John Groombridge
TREASURER
NGATUHOA LODGE 2000
Nights of SATURDAY 22 to SUNDAY 30 JANUARY 2000 Leaving Monday morning.
Ngatuhoa is a youth camp deep in the bush of the Kaimai Ranges. The camp has a bunkhouse with 50 comfortable bunks, a large dining-room with fireplace, and fully equipped kitchen with six hob gas cooker and slow burning wood fire. An outside building houses a barbecue, pantry, and a large fridge; another has hot showers and flush toilets. There is also a recreation hail for extra sleeping. Canoes and life jackets are in shed a short stroll away. There is plenty of room for tents and campervans. Power is supplied from a small hydro station nearby.
How to get there
Allow up to 4 hours drive from Auckland. Meet at the first gate at the end of McLarens Falls Road. McLarens Falls Rd is on the south side of Highway 29 between Matamata and Tauranga. Take extreme care turning into McLarens Falls Rd if you are travelling from Matamata towards Tauranga (McLarens Falls Rd is on your right and you have to cross on-coming traffic). If you over-shoot McLarens Falls Rd, Thom Rd is a short distance further on the left, and provides an opportunity to pull off SH29 and plan your next move. Do not go down to Omanawa Rd if arriving from Matamata; it is too dangerous turning right into Omanawa Rd. It's ok if you are coming from Tauranga and going straight up to the gate.
Ngatuhoa is about 23Km from SH29, through two locked gates, which cannot be left unlocked under any circumstances. We travel in convoy. Turn on your headlights, and watch out for on-coming traffic. The last 9Km is on a private forestry road, generally good, with several short steep narrow sections. We use the marked road to the Lodge, no general use of roads is permitted.
MEETING TIMES: 2pm Saturday, 4-30pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 7pm Friday, 10am Saturday
YOU MUST BE AT THE GATE ON TIME OR YOU WILL BE LEFT BEHIND. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ENTER AT ANY OTHER TIMES unless you have made special arrangements before hand.
THINGS TO TAKE: All your own food, milk and drinks; eating and cooking utensils;
Sheets & blankets, or sleeping bag,and pillow;
Warm clothing for evenings; suntan oil and insect repellent; personal gear.
MAKE SURE YOU BRING A TORCH.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF FUEL IN YOUR VEHICLE - fill at Matamata or Tauranga.
GENERAL RULES
NO PETS: DOGS and CATS are NOT PERMITTED at the lodge.
NO CARAVANS The private roads are not suitable. We may not be able to help you if you break down or get into difficulties. The road vanes from year to year. Trailers with a reasonable vehicle have normally been ok, (but we suggest some rope just in case). Cars are not allowed on the Village Green.
PERMITS are required for firearms, and a licence for fishing.
NO SMOKING IN THE MAIN BUILDINGS, we are our own Fire Brigade, hoses are installed.
CHILDREN are very welcome but watch them at all times. Responsibility rests with parent or guardian. Streams and dense bush are all around.
POWER is limited, no heaters or high current appliances.
FRIDGE space is limited. Perishable food has first priority. Keep all chilli bins out of the fridge. They take up unnecessary space which others could use to keep their food cool. Chili bins also insulate their contents from the cold. Use a cardboard box instead, the cold will go through to the food.
CAMERAS AND VIDEOS Use with discretion. Ask first.
ALL RUBBISH THAT WILL NOT BURN IS TO BE TAKEN HOME WITH YOU.
LEAVE EVERYTHING AS YOU FOUND IT, OR CLEAN AND TIDY
