An interesting pastime for a warm summer evening is the contemplation of the rise and fall of genitalia in New Zealand newspapers. Our very own campaigner and general spokeswoman for the Society for the Presumption of Community Standards, maintains that the root of all this disgusting evil is those intellectual academics on the Indecent Publications Tribunal. Well how can you argue with that? In July 1968 the Indecent Publications Tribunal declared three classes for publications which included depictions of the "nude form". 1. Unexceptionable (natural nudist etc.) 2. Restricted (posed but not unpleasant or exaggerated) 3. Indecent (deliberately unnatural or contrived) A member of the Tribunal pointed out to the editor of the Naturist at the time, Perc Cousins (who incidentally had been called as a "Crown" witness) that depiction of pubic hair had never been illegal in New Zealand. For the following two or three years the Naturist was available in two versions: the local (unretouched) edition and the bald Australian version (until Mr Chipp made a minor modification to the customs of his Ministry). The year following the Indecent Publications Tribunal guidelines, saw the publication in Truth of an "example of a dirty picture" (similar in composition but a bit more explicit than fig. 1) to illustrate an article on the subject. In 1970 there appeared in Wellington's Evening Post (a newspaper of fairly catholic interests) an advertisement for pantyhose (fig. 2). Discrete enquiries a week later indicated no complaints received by the paper. |

December 1972; and the Sunday Times revealed a little more than official patronage at the NZSA Rally in Auckland; and we were intrigued to discover that nudes had another sex (figs. 9, 10). |
Figure 9Figure 10 January 1973 Ngaruawahia the Sunday Times, Sunday News and television were all in at the kill (figs. 11, 12, 13,14, 15). (It was a long hot summer).

The Council's "Public Representative" is Dr J.L. Robson, a retired former Secretary of Justice, and its chairman is Sir Alfred North, a retired Judge whose opinions on nudery have been evident in some of his comments on cases involving sexual offenders. There is room for speculation too, on how much the Council may have been influenced by a comment from a national meeting of Justices of the Peace about the regrettable tendency of some editors to indulge in "an excessive emphasis on the exhibitionism of the young". "The Council believes that editors could wisely acknowledge the existence of a significant body of opinion that is critical of the standards of journalism some publications have adopted, or to which they may be edging". |
![]() |
Finally the Council declared that freedom of the press meant, on the negative side, the responsibility not to offend: editors should have "a sensitive regard for the interests and feelings of others!" Pin-ups, it seems, were tolerated as a nod to the pressures of 'public interest'(?) but nudity needed more of a full frontal attack. And if it sells papers (as editors ruefully confirm) then it must be exploitation of sex for gain (a disgusting evil). The Council also pointed out after all that, they couldn't really do much about it anyway: that would be up to the courts (that is apart from Sir Alfred's beaming admission on Television of having had "some influence", he thought). A day or two after the publication of the Press Council's findings, the Evening Post printed fig. 16. It's hard to tell whether the lack of complaint in this case was due to the sheath, the ethnic origin or just a reputation for being a nice newspaper. Next the police prosecuted the Sunday Times, Truth and Sunday News for printing figs. 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, more were originally listed but seem to have been dropped along the way. The hearing for Truth and Sunday Times took place in Wellington in October 1973. The magistrate was a Roman Catholic, as were all the other magistrates in Wellington. One must hasten to point out that there is of course no objection to anyone's religion as such, but it must be very difficult for any person to try and give a valid judgement on say the taste of a new flavour of sausage, if that person (and presumably many of his friends who would provide his "mirror of contemporary standards") was a confirmed vegetarian. There were eight witnesses for the defence and one for the prosecution; a policeman who admitted that he was not offended as a private citizen, only as an officer of the law! Figure 16
|
Using the same criteria required by the Act as the Indecent Publications Tribunal, the magistrate - putting aside his own feeling that the average New Zealand parent seemed to be sick and tired of the unhealthy exploitation of sex at every turn - said that he couldn't judge the case simply on the evidence presented because he would be failing to take into account the people, even if they were a minority, who would be offended by nudity in the newspaper; the context of a newspaper is news (no nudes is good news?). Truth was found guilty therefore and fined $750. The Sunday Times charges were dismissed by the same magistrate at the same time because in this case "the pictures weren't posed or contrived"(!) there was no "immoral or mischievous tendency" and they were parts of legitimate news stories: besides, the management had said that not only would it not happen again, it should never have happened in the first place. Precisely what they meant by "it" has never been clear, since the same management is in charge of Truth, Sunday News, Evening Post etc. and they have all indulged in the reproduction of something apparently defined as ''it''. In the case of Truth, the magistrate had concluded that since the Act gave jurisdiction to the courts (where a publication is printed weekly or more frequently), the Tribunal's precedents ("unexceptionable" in this case), did not apply and neither did the Act's requirement of proof of injury to the "public good". Anyway these pictures were, he said, "posed and contrived". The Tribunal's proposition in 1968 that "if pleasant and unretouched nude pictures were as common in the community as it appears they are in nudist clubs then it is likely that their production would be greeted with no more unseemly excitement than it is there", was apparently ignored altogether; the question was for the magistrate to decide on the basis of offence "against the recognised standards of propriety and delicacy of current contemporary society" and were by that view "in extremely bad taste". The tribunal has also pointed out that they "do not believe the Act requires that young people should be kept in ignorance of the adult form" and "we do not think that public interest requires suppression merely on the grounds of unorthodoxy, and we do not think the community desires it". Truth appealed and in April 1974 Mr Justice White said that the defence hadn't shown that the magistrate was wrong: "Neither juries nor members of the judiciary are required to accept the views of witnesses representing particular sections of the community as establishing a mirror of contemporary standards": appeal dismissed. |
Figure 17
The prosecution of the Sunday News had been held up until the decision on the Truth case, so the way was now clear for a hearing over fig. 13. It took place in Auckland in May 1974, before yet another "vegetarian". His reserved decision: guilty of publishing an indecent picture and mischievous intent (on the front page indeed!) fine: $500. It is interesting to compare this decision with that on the Sunday Times whose case was dismissed. And a final question for a perspiring evening: why hasn't anyone prosecuted the Listener (fig. 17), Women's Weekly (fig. 18) or Evening Post? Hint; apparently "it" is indecent if it is not part of legitimate news or it's on the front page covered with a cross which draws attention to "it". Or as a contemporary American Judge (or was it a Senator?) remarked: "I don't know what 'it' is, but I sure know 'it' when I see 'it'." |

youth organiser's report |
Before I get to the meat (or scraps, depending on your own view-point) of this little homily, I would like to conjecture on its possible effects. I assume, (for the sake of argument) that my ideas and conclusions are basically sound. I think that a figure of 10% is a fair, if generous guess as to the number of NZSA members who actually read my articles. Of this 10%, perhaps half, agree with its general sentiments. I think it is fair to say that only 5% of this figure would be actually moved to action by agreement with the articles. So that makes one person in four hundred who might actually do something positive in the direction I suggest. Now take into consideration the negative effect the opinions of many of the other 399 NZSA readers have on this progress and you have a formula for no change. The obvious question that follows such a conclusion, is why anyone bothers to write articles such as these. The answer is somewhat obscure; perhaps that an article such as this might help in a small way to create the climate for change. Because the under 25's form such a large percentage of the population of New Zealand, one might expect a similar percentage of Youth active in nudist clubs. This is of course not so, and as far as I can see, never will be. The reason is that Nudist Clubs in New Zealand cater principally for the family group, i.e. married couples and their pre-adolescent children. Whilst one can say that this situation is ideal for such family groups, as far as the teenager is concerned with all his outside interests, nudism is very constricting. This is sad, because young folk do not adhere to any nudist dogma, and therefore in some respects are the more natural nudists. The irony here is that they are collectively most likely to show their nudist sympathies when the nudist "Establishment" disapproves, such as on a public beach! Nudism as we know it in the NZSA is only one kind of nudism, and I have often wondered how much youngster participation there is in more liberal clubs, such as those which have recently come to the fore in the U.K. Clubs such as Eureka run by Mark Wilson, an exponent of a more open nudism, with no restrictions on single male membership, no probationary membership etc. Following from this, I think that highly controlled Youth groups are only suitable for 11-14 year olds. After this age group an organisation such as N.Y.C. is the only compromise likely to attract Youth. Because of this I sincerely hope that all the clubs in New Zealand will accept the NYC's application for full membership of the NZSA at Christchurch this year. Any further prevarication on the part of the NZSA, will I fear, be the last nail in the coffin of the relationship between Youth and the NZSA. Tony Wood |

Again I am up against the disadvantage of the long interval between the issues of our N.Z. Naturist. The reports on this topic are either far behind the events or any action taken on this subject is in a stage where any publication can do more harm than good. I succeeded in squeezing in the last issue a little piece of good news at the very last moment. There follows an extract of Section 47 of the report on the Police Offences Act 1927 or as the proposal of the Select Committee likes to call it the Summary Offences Act.
Our only comment can be that the Select Committee has handled our submission in exactly the spirit that we intended it to be. I have had very encouraging reports and news paper clippings from clubs who, as a result of the above, are preparing their local authority for an application for a free beach as soon as the above Act has been passed by Parliament. We hope that this will take place sometime in the beginning of next year. Emiel Roland |

The NZSA organized a Free Beach Rally at Port Ohope on the 9th and 10th November 1974. Our hosts Ken and Lois England had reserved their whole motor camp for nudists only. A lot of writing and discussion with the Whakatane County Council, The commissioner of Crown Lands, the Port Ohope Domain Board and the Port Ohope Development Committee and the Police department for the district had preceded this very successful weekend. Nearly all the North Island clubs were represented with one or more couples. We saw a gathering of approx. 150 nudists in tents, caravans, bus and motel units. The NZSA was represented by our very active North Island vice-president Ian Fairbrother. The weather could have been better, but although the sun in all its warmth was only occasionally there on Saturday, on Sunday afternoon it really did its best. The wide strand and its very gentle sloping grade into the sea made it very safe for even the smallest child. Officials from the Police and the P.R.O. of Whakatane came and commented that everything was so quiet, contrary to further down the beach, where some disturbances had occurred in the camps on Saturday. The Ohope Life Saving Club sent two of its members, also nudists, with some boats but all they did was enjoy themselves with fishing, and what whoppers they caught!! Also some local boys decided to join us in the warm sea-water. Interviews over Radio Whakatane and for the local news paper took up the Saturday morning. The Gisborne and Waikato Clubs found time to organize a shield match in tenniquoits. The matches were played with vigour. But Gisborne was no match for Waikato. Some very ingenious camping outfits were on display with a real feeling for the economic use of space. Saturday night brought us together with big quantities of mussels cooked a la Barbecue style, and a sing-song. Everybody agreed it had been a most successful weekend and many bookings were already taken for the next N.Z.S.A. Free Beach Rally on the 8th and 9th of March 1975. Emiel Roland |

As reported in the last issue, the Liberal Party of Victoria State Council were to have discussed a move to have nude bathing in declared areas, made legal. Regrettably, time did not allow this item to be discussed. However it is hoped that the proposal will be re-submitted. In recent years an unofficial free beach has been quietly established in Westernport Bay, East of Melbourne at Somers. The beach is adjacent to Flinders Naval Base, which is Commonwealth property. The authorities only concern seems to be that bathers remain on sand, and not stray beyond into dunes area. More and more people are using Somers as it's existence becomes known. It is to be hoped that we can develop Point Impossible in the same way, as we will then have an ocean beach to the West of Melbourne. The December 1st Free Beach Day mentioned in September's issue, will be the scene for filming a Free Beach Segment for the Crawford Production Documentary being made on nudism in Australia. The A.N.F. are delighted with the prospects of this coming colour television Documentary - incorporating all aspects of our Movement. Filming began in September, and still more will be done at the A.N.F. Convention-Rally at Kiata Club in December. Appreciation for getting this important documentary "under way" must go to Tasha and Mick Douty members of Corio Valley Club in Geelong. March 2nd has been set aside by the Nudist Association of Victoria for a further beach day at Point Impossible. Ted Weston |

Once upon a time there were three bears, George, Barbara and daughter Anne, nine years old, who started a club by that name. We would like to tell you a little about how it came to be and the reason for its being. George and Barbara were first introduced to a nudist club some twelve years ago when they joined Auckland Sun Club while on a working holiday. On returning to Australia they had already decided that the naturist way of life is the greatest thing one can enjoy. In Victoria they decided that Helios was the type of club they would like to join, it was one hours drive which took them out into the Dandenongs. Year after year they kept saying, "we will have to go north so we can enjoy this great life all the year and not just a few months as one can in Victoria". At the last they decided to do something about it. During 1972 they had sold their home and furniture and moved into a caravan. They were now ready for their trip north. After spending a few months in Sydney they headed for Queensland, starting out on Anzac night 1973. They spend a very enjoyable week-end with the property owners of the Mowana Northern Rivers Club near Grafton before moving on. They arrived in Queensland on the last day in April, and then the big task started. Looking for the type of property one would need to start a nudist club. With limited capital and a strong desire to get somewhere they spend many a day and night searching for their present property which they have called "The Home of the Three Bears". It is about 42 kilometres from Brisbane and even less from the Gold Coast. Having visited some sixteen different nudist clubs in Australia and New Zealand, they are hoping to include some features from each. As most sun club members are aware, each club has it's own identity and special features. George and Barbara realise it will not be possible to have all the best features of every club, for instance they don't have a nice river running through their grounds,or some of the other great assets which some clubs have, but they will do their best to make up for it. |
Photos: G. Cruickshank
The three bears belonged to one club in Victoria for eleven years and were so enchanted with it that they have decided to try to use it as a model for their own club. In a climate such as they have in Brisbane, even in winter the weather is suitable for the nudist way of life. They believe that this is the ideal place for a club and hope that naturists travelling south will welcome a stop over-night or longer if they wish, their property is only a minute's drive from the Pacific Highway. They also hope to have many naturists coming north on holiday, be it for a month or more, or only a few days, they will be most welcome at The Three Bears. The Three Bears live a true naturist life at the club and it is their wish to share their enjoyment of nudism with others. Of course it will take a little time to get to know the requirements and the likes and dislikes of the people in this warmer climate, but they feel that in the very near future they shall be able to cater for all nudists whether they live in the area, are on vacation, or are just passing through. The Three Bears is set in approximately four hectares (about nine acres) of lovely bush, the property some few years ago had been cleared, and only the better type of tree had been retained. Now the young trees are well established and make The Three Bears a nudist paradise. It is a haven for wild life, with lots of wallabies and many different birds. The Three Bears have an 800 watt generator for power at present, but no doubt it will not be long before this is replaced by a larger one. There is a filtered pool, circular in shape and a mini-ten court. It is only a very short time since The Three Bears obtained their property, but they are very pleased to say that the first visitors to the club were a family of Helios members who were holidaying at Been leigh at the time. If you are interested in more details and would like to visit the Three Bears, you are invited to write to The Secretary, The Three Bears, Been leigh 4207, Queensland. |
news from the clubs in new zealand
Bay of Plenty Sun Club Inc Here from the sunny Bay of Plenty we are getting ready for a summer season on our new grounds, after all the rain of the past few weeks we hope that the weather clears up so that we can live up to our reputation as we have a very busy time ahead of us, but I'm sure that with all the willing help we have within the club, we will go into it with the will that does so much to keep our clubs as strong as they are. During the winter a lot of work has been done in clearing some of the willows from the area close to the stream and three places have been bulldozed and levelled and will soon be laid in lawn to be used as games courts etc, our next project is to provide a place to swim this will not be too difficult as the natural stream which runs through the property is ideal for this purpose, we are very lucky to have a very sympathetic and helpful farmer next door to us and he has gone Out of his way to give us all the help he can. Our new secretary lives in Rotorua, so when you see in the club directory the address for B.O.P. Sun Club has a box No. in Rotorua don't be too confused the club is still in the Whakatane area, incidentally if you have a few days to spend in the summer, why not come and pay a visit to our new grounds, see the potential if offers, see the native bush, the natural stream, the pleasant walks, the sheltered sunning areas, and the wonderful views. From our highest point we can see right across to the ocean on one side and over to Kawarau about 15 miles away on the other, we have a tar sealed road right to the gate, plenty of camping space and only a short drive to many secluded beaches, so why not come along, you need the sun we need your support.
Auckland Sun Club Inc With Christmas upon us we can look back over a good club year. We have consolidated the advances of the last couple of years and are preparing for the next big step - a new club house. This project has been delayed by the local body requirement for the land to be rezoned before building permission is granted. So it will be a few months before we can make a start. Meanwhile we look forward to the new season. For those who, regrettably won't be able to make the Christchurch Rally there will be our 'Fun In The Sun' Camp-in on our own grounds over the rally period. We'll be community cooking and will welcome daily visits from members of other North Island Clubs. There should be plenty going on - so why not join us. |
Northern Sun Seekers Inc. During the winter months we have organised a variety of entertainments for ourselves which were attended by a small but enthusiastic group of club members. The most popular event of our social season was a progressive dinner which had 40% of the club participating. The following month we had a trip to the Waiwera Hot Pools and our last event was an Oriental evening with fancy dress. Since the last time of writing we have had our A.G.M. which resulted in a general reshuffle with only the President remaining in his original office. The new committee have reorganised themselves into sub-committees of 2 or 3 members, with each group responsible for a different phase of running the club; ground maintenance, fund raising, membership, and land purchase etc. One of the black spots in our club development is the lack of our own club grounds, and the soaring cost of property is hindering the chances of acquiring any. With the club grounds being about a mile from the road, the track is impassable to cars during the wet weather. This makes Uretiti beach very popular on hot spring days with some club members. We are working on this problem, and the muddiest spots are getting a layer of brown rock. Hoping many of you will be able to visit our grounds over Christmas and get plenty of happy sunning. Auckland Outdoor Health Club Inc To open this particular summary the Auckland Outdoor Health Club wishes the following to be noted by all member clubs of the N.Z.S.A. that on August 28th 1974 A.O.H.C. officially reached its 25 years of age. To date our most enterprising venture has been the club house extension and renovation which, by the time these comments reach print should be fully completed. Our next major task is a general tidy up top soiling broken ground and the setting up of boxing for concrete paths around the entire building. The real test of appreciation is likely to come during the Christmas-New Year period when many members and visitors are present at "Oranui". The official opening will be held on November 16th and any member who has attended a social function at Oranui knows that a lively night can be expected. Although this project has been the centre of interest in recent months various other activities have been maintained. On the leisure scene we note that two further visits have been made to 'Parakai" thermal pools. This is a great way for members to invite their friends along to one of the numerous gatherings exclusive to the Club. Sauna evenings are continuing to be popular with some new faces appearing each week. Arbor Day, an annual event in the life of the club, fell on August 19th this year. Many native trees and shrubs were received which will further help to beautify the surroundings. |
Gisborne Sun Club Inc The first to get the "Son". A welcome new member for G.S.C. was Gavin John, the son born to Jan and Graham in September. Congratulations to you both. This is the only natural increase in the club for some time so is especially welcome. Even though September was the wettest month in Gisborne on record we have not filled our big new tank but it is a good feeling having the water there. The day it was installed was one of the wettest so perhaps this means we will always have plenty of water? One major event that has taken place this last month was the disappearance of the orange trees. We are now impatiently awaiting the arrival of the contractor to do the rotary hoeing and levelling etc. for the lawns. The grounds seem to have grown very large now with all that open space in front of the club house. There are plenty of plans afoot for the next few weeks so we should see quite a bit of activity. Pouring concrete around the pool is one thing on the agenda which will be most necessary as the sun is getting rapidly warmer and with new grass around excess water would not help. An enjoyable weekend was spent at the Hawkes Bay Club grounds when twelve adults, with their children, travelled down to attend an evening of entertainment by the pop-group Marmalade in Napier. The club's lovely big pool was not full but it was an ideal place for sunbathing even in September. It was pleasing to note at the A.G.M. that most positions had to go to the vote. A good proportion of the new committee are relatively new members whose enthusiasm will help the club a great deal. A visit by a person considered important to us is planned for next month. He is the Public Relations Officer for the city of Gisborne, with his wife and family, who in the past has been most helpful to us. Unfortunately there will not be the usual number of members attending the Rally this year owing to the distance we have to travel but we will be well represented by four families. By combining with Taranaki, and thereby forming the formidable Gisnaki, we will be a force to be reckoned with. An expedition in a hired mini-bus was mounted and left on Friday 11th October at 9pm headed for the Taranaki Cabaret. First stop was at Rotorua at 2am and we were very grateful for the hospitality shown by Noel and Joan as they had put up beds in every spare inch in the house. On the road again at 8am Saturday to spend a very enjoyable evening and morning at the Western branch's big night. It was pleasing to see that they also can have wet weather there on cabaret nights but dancing in gumboots was difficult and we are still waiting to catch a glimpse of that elusive mountain, it is rumoured that it is a myth and they haven't even got one. Once again, Taranaki, many thanks for your terrific hospitality. |

WE WELCOME NEW MEMBERS — We prefer family groups although single men and women are accepted. |
Otago Sun Club Inc This winter we have had much more contact between members than in any other off season. The main reason is that we are putting together our Leisure Centre. When we started in June, we intended to make a few alterations to the premises to accommodate our needs, but as we went along it has grown into a major project. Our members so far have spent almost 3,000 man hours on the project and if you take into calculation this represents approximately eight regular workers it is a lot of man hours. Our main intention with the project is to provide people with the glorious feeling of relaxation and well being. We have carried out wide research regarding the Sauna and the gymnasium. The Sauna is of original Finnish design and will accommodate up to 30 people, but we would like to tell you a little more about what we plan to do with our gym. We will have a series of preventive health courses. One of these courses will be aimed at professional men and women and will involve basically cardio-vascular exercise and dietary advice. Another course is aimed at the housebound housewife and will mainly consist of weight watching and keep fit exercises. For each person a programme will be laid down and in the initial stages will be supervised by our fully qualified consultant, and later under the guidance of our trained staff. Under considerate and expert supervision, regular exercise in our gym will produce a better functioning body. Exercise is more than psychological pampering of the body. It does work. We feel strongly that with this project we will be able to put into practice what the naturist movement is all about. 'Be healthy and stay healthy' and we will be able to give people a choice of outdoor activity on our club grounds or indoor activity at the Leisure Centre. |
South Canterbury Sun Club Inc I dare say that a number of people in the Naturist movement will be wondering what has happened to us down here in South Canterbury. Well at last we have purchased 17 acres of Native Bush near Geraldine. We still have work to do on Town Planning and Access but we are able to use the grounds in their present state. We have had and still have opposition but we are quite sure that in time we will overcome all and be able to develop our property. There is also a strip of land owned by the Crown, area 3 acres, that the land and survey have indicated we can purchase once our access etc has been approved. A full report will be given to the NZSA at the ACM at Pineglades. During the winter months we have been very fortunate to have obtained the Timaru Sauna on the first Saturday of each month beginning in June. We have the use of two sauna rooms, one at 180 degrees and the other at 200. There is also a plunge pool, showers, exercise equipment, massage room, sun room, kitchen, T V lounge and piped music throughout. The evening starts at 7.30pm and we put on tea, coffee and cold fruit drinks and also play some "Housie". These evenings we have made open to members and their friends and the Sauna has been instrumental in bringing us new members and also has been a great help for other new members conditioning them to the idea of social nudity. The evenings have been successful both socially and economically. With the warmer weather approaching we are all anxious to get into our new grounds, and with the enthusiasm we have down here I am quite sure that it will not be long before our grounds start to take shape. A number of us will be attending the Rally at Pineglades and we are all looking forward to meeting Naturists from other centres. It will be easy to pick out the South Canterbury members. We have a reputation of which we are justly proud and this is for friendliness. Just look our for the 'Very Friendly' members and they will be from South Canterbury. See you all at the Rally. |

Palmerston North Sun Club (Inc) The Most exciting news for the Palmerston North Club at the moment is the completion of our two pools. In only 18 working days (approx 2½ months of week-ends) the children's pool 30ft by 12ft and the adults pool 65ft by 35ft have been built. Only a few months ago these pools were only an idea. After our Special General Meeting it was decided by the members present to build the new concrete pools. Two of our members worked all day and through one night carting the metal for the pools. Then another week-end members felled some trees to be milled for boxing. August 31st was the day of the 'Big Pour' of the floor. Now all the sides are up but there is still a lot more work with the surroundings. All through the building of the pools it has been amazing what an excellent attendance of members there has been to help. In fact there has sometimes been too many. The wives have worked hard having all the meals ready. The club would like to thank everyone who helped and spent so much of their time, it is a credit to them. If you would like to join us in the largest Sun club pool in New Zealand write to our Secretary, P.O. Box 980, Palmerston North.
Wellington Sun Club Inc Wellington appears to be about to emerge from the wettest winter on record and a lot of the winter projects have not been completed. Our Clubhouse project has not advanced as planned but it is a good to see the main framework erected to give an indication of size. A lot of work and a lot of money before the rally of '77 when we hope to use our new clubhouse instead of needing to hire a marquee. Winter activities have included two good socials and a very successful Ball. Successful not only for entertainment but also financially. Saunas have also proved very popular, we are fortunate to have two available. |
We decided last year at about this time to alter our "year" and start each financial year, A.G.M. and all that, at the end of the season rather than at the beginning. This we hope will give the incoming committee the opportunity to formulate ideas over the slack period of winter and enact these policies during the subsequent summer. This was partly a result of revising the Constitution. These things definitely do need to be taken Out, dusted, examined and modified where necessary, every once in a while. We have just held our second half annual general meeting for the extended period, the AGM, will be held in March of '75. Doug Cousins, well known to all in the movement, has accepted life membership of Wellington Sun Club. His work for both our Club and NZSA has been both energetic and productive. A lot of the beauty of 'Fiveacres' is due largely to Doug's valiant efforts at planting trees. Jeff, our president, referred to Doug as performing the function of "conscience" of the Club, keeping us pointed in the right direction and while all may not agree, everyone stops and listens to what he has to say. Geyserland Sun Club Good news at last! We have managed to lease a plot of land, which we feel must be one of the most beautiful sites anywhere in the country. It consists of 5 or 6 acres of very fine pasture and approximately 15 acres of native bush. Dividing the pasture from the bush is one of the best Trout streams in the country, but unfortunately no fishing is allowed. This land has come very expensively which will require us to keep a very close watch on our finances in future. We may have to charge a small entry and camping fee. Looking on the brighter side, we are hoping to increase our membership now that we have something to offer, so anybody showing interest is cordially invited to join us. Hoping to see plenty of patronage in the coming summer. So the best of the sun from Geyserland Sun Club. |

letters to the editor
Dear Sir, I would like to comment on a letter in your last issue (No. 72; Sept.) written by D.K.H. Melbourne. Before I do so would like to say that I am pleased to see that beliefs which I have held for years are being forwarded, both in the fact of your magazine and by the clubs themselves. Until I was given a copy of the magazine by a colleague, I had no idea that there was any form of organised club activity in this country, and the fact of their being is, I believe, a tremendously good thing. But as a non-member of your association, I may be Out of place in so writing. I hope not. Over the past 18 months I have been doing research into drug misuse and abuse in New Zealand, with particular reference to the legal elements. In doing this research, have come into close contact with a considerable portion of what is loosely described as 'dissident youths', or 'fringe groups'; in short, the groups most likely to be regarded as 'disturbed', although not necessarily by drugs whatever the implications. Working on a broad principle that a proportion of the extremists of this group' will be typical of any member of this society except on a slightly exaggerated scale and in a more obvious sense, one or two observations may be applied to the points raised by D.K.H. He refers to the normal healthy interest of teenagers in their awakening sexuality. He goes on to say that adults should do well to. acknowledge and encourage this awakening and that (by implication) the clubs are tending to repress such development. In no sense should normal boy-girl contact be frowned upon by naturist clubs. Such normal teenage activities as hand-holding, mild(?) cuddling and petting should be a normal part of teenage naturist activities. He goes onto comment about teenagers becoming sexually excited. I can only say from my own observations that I wholly agree with him. Of the data I accumulated, one side-feature seems appropriate. A considerable proportion of the people who were interviewed stated that their home life was (ranging from) conservative to repressive. The actual proportion was too high to ignore as an imagined ill, and it must be borne in mind as highly relevant that what may be seen as quite reasonable or fitting from the viewpoint of an adult may have totally different connotations to an impressionable and proud teenager. It is therefore important that the matter be considered from all standpoints. Where a home is conservative in its attitudes, and this may be reflected by adults albeit unconsciously, both at home and at a club, and is therefore the attitude of the club itself, then a very powerful motivation in a teenager can be misled, If teenagers are disposed to a possible guilt feeling (whether real or imagined as a result of a pre-existing attitude, conscious or otherwise as a direct end result of their youth and its obviousness) then the side-effects can be out of proportion to the original difference. |
Therefore I suggest that it is a basic truth that where a teenager is aroused and is displaying this arousal, it is no more than the visible sign of impending physical maturity displayed in an honest sense, and that to suppress this is in a way fundamentally dishonest, can only be repressive and thus to a degree harmful, and finally, it defeats the very purpose and basic premise of naturist clubs: to develop and foster a healthy and openly respectful appreciation of people as they really are, without the trappings that can disguise them. Being moderately observant it does not require more than an adequate mind to see that sexuality, sensuality and even honest emotion is not a truly accepted part of our way of life. There is still a strong tendency towards the traditional male image with the helpless(?) female tucked in behind. Even though the attitude has changed and been modified in recent years, it is still clearly visible, Like many people I firmly believe that respect and liking are the real criteria in any worthwhile relationship, and that sensuality-sexuality can be, and in some cases should be natural and desirable side-effects. Therefore, within reason, suppression of this basically normal human feature is hypocritical given the aims and purposes of this way of life, given that honesty is the keynote. If by example nudist clubs can do away with the furtiveness and guilt that many teenagers feel in their 'awakening years' so that the need to be breakaway is no longer present, or antagonised needlessly; that there is nothing to feel shame over and hide, and that the good things in life are best when they are honest and clean, open and without guilt, then an immeasurable amount of good may be rendered to the community as a whole. I would add two parting sallies: I think it was George Bernard Shaw who once stated, 'A man of genius may be hypocritical in his modesty, but a lesser man of fewer talents has much to be modest about.' Maybe Shaw intended a slightly different context, but give thought to the possibility that our bodies, and their potential are indeed a stroke of genius! And secondly, I myself have never yet quite got over my pleasure at seeing a nude person, or being nude myself, or my constant surprise at how nice people really look, and are, in their natural state. Neither have I quite reached the point where I fail to feel some response for a person for whom there is an attraction, and I hope I never do. Maybe I should know better; after all, I'm 28 and not quite a teenager, but honesty should not just be their prerogative. Michael Booth Dear Sir, I am not a club member but have been a keen nudist for a few years now and support very strongly the move toward free beaches. Talking to people about this, one point still seems misconstrued, this is an old one, of others thinking we want these beaches to ourselves. Even though this has been a well aired point, it still does not seem to be getting through and I feel the public is against a takeover perhaps more than nudity. I am glad to see that family groups getting plenty of photo space as I feel there are still a lot of people who think the sight of a naked body will turn their child blind. J. Ather |
Dear Sir, After being a nudist for ten years I am still bewildered as to why members "turn off" when confronted with public promotion, of nudism. For many years the general public have been endeavouring to reason why we are nudists. For the same number of years nudists have been trying to protect their idea of nudism and keep it a secret from the public. Most nudists would agree that many wonderful aspects make one glad to be a nudist. This being so why are we afraid to let friends, workmates and relatives know our "secret"? Are our characters so brittle that we will shatter if found Out? Are we ashamed of what we believe to be so right? How many nudists have experienced the attitudes of people who have found them out? I have spoken to many nudists and non- nudists in the hope of finding the answer to these questions. Now however I have arrived at yet another set of questions. Do we want to feel different from others? Do we want to stop the public from knowing what goes on? Should we allow their minds to conjure up whatever thoughts they wish? Surely if we examine these questions, we must realise it is time that nudists begin to have confidence in their own convictions and inform the public of what we do, instead of selfishly guarding what nudism is all about. The sooner the public is made aware of our way of relaxation the sooner we will be accepted by the community. Some members may not agree with informing the public, but they should not criticize members who are willing to appear publicly to promote nudism, after all the end result will benefit all. In this enlightened society we should not deny ourselves the right to be able to say "we are nudists", the same as a neighbour or a friend may say he is a member of a golf club or a football club. If members are concerned about the presence of T.V. cameras, reporters or such, surely they can stay clear of the activities and allow those who are not concerned to promote our way of life. The public will soon realize that we are ordinary people participating in normal recreations but with the unique atmosphere, whereby whole families enjoy their leisure together, in numerous and varied ways. Alan Neicho, President, Helios Soc. Dear Sir, I would like to say I agree with your interpretation of "nude" and I think as long as Suntan Sam does not do it in the busy city streets he hasn't much to worry about. Keep up the good work, I am not a club member but nudity, free beaches and the New Zealand Naturist have my support for what its worth. Good Luck, John Atherton |

Dear Sir, In the last two copies of the N.Z. Naturist (Nos. 71 & 72) Tony Wood has attempted to probe what is a very vexed problem; youths participation in the activities of our clubs. How can any individual see and understand, and what is more, put across to another group of sceptical individuals the sum total of youths aspirations and expectations? Why not let every teenager speak his or her mind freely and without fear of being criticised, being ostracised, or in any way being put in his place? To do that you Mr Editor, would have to set aside one full page of the N.Z. Naturist each quarter for the next year, at least, so that our youth could individually make their suggestions and express their ideas in print. You would have to guarantee them that no names would be published, no criticism allowed, (Or even comments), and that that page was there for them to fill. |
The old diehards would snort but if they are not allowed to immediately rush into print till the twelve months is up they would, I believe read those letters and the ones that subsequently followed, over many times and in the end mellow their comments with a little compassion and tolerance. I believe the more often those letters are read the nearer one would get to understanding just what the writer was trying to say, and/or do, and that is what we must do to be one big family. At the end of the twelve months period it is possible that some would still be frothing at the mouth and would want to say what they thought of the letters, I am sure Tony is quite capable of dealing with them (if their criticism is harmful.) I regret to say that if I reserved one full page each issue for letters from our teenagers that page would remain blank. I have tried to encourage the younger generation to contribute correspondence and articles with very disappointing results. Perhaps your letter and this comment will stimulate a little more response.-Ed. |
news from the clubs in australia
Walkabout Sun & Health Club, Queensland Our club is the furthest North in Queensland. Our grounds are small, about 4 acres but we have all the facilities necessary as it is an old caravan park. We have camping sites with water and electricity, a 20 ft. by 40 ft. swimming pool, mini-ten court, table tennis, kitchen with cooker and fridges, television room and just recently hot water for our showers and washer provided by a wood stove. The membership has been quite small but we seem to be looking up recently, now having 40 families and seven single members with quite a few prospective members. For the first time in the clubs history we are a year in advance with our rent. Our social life is very busy with at least one social event each month, barbecues, Hawaiian nights, 4 course dinners, wine and cheese evenings etc. We have had visitors from New Zealand and one present member is a New Zealander. We always welcome visitors! |
Naturi Club N.S.W. With the advent of spring, the bushland at Naturi has burst into a mass of colour. Everywhere can be seen the beautiful red and pink of boronia, yellow pea, purple wild iris, the many types of grevillea, and many other lovely wild flowers. Along with the flowers, our members are also stirring, and we are seeing many familiar faces now that better weather has arrived. During August we welcomed Dick and Vera from Pine Glades, Christchurch, who spent a most enjoyable and, for August, pleasantly warm day, at the club grounds. Unfortunately they were not able to visit during a week-end, and so could not meet our members. They spent several days with Bob and dance, who were able to show them quite a lot of Sydney. We hope to see you both again Vera and Dick. We also had a visit from Lorraine and John from Yulti-Wirra in South Australia. They are touring on a working holiday in Queensland, and visiting as many clubs as possible. They were very impressed with Naturi, and pleased to experience such a warm and friendly atmosphere on their visit. They intend to re-visit us at Christmas. John and Heinz, with help from Eicke, have tiled the children's pool, thus reducing maintenance. Plans are under way for the Christmas party, and we are looking forward to a most enjoyable day. The members of Naturi extend to the Editor and staff of the , and all our other Kiwi friends our sincere wishes for a Holy and Happy Christmas, with happiness and success in 1975. |

NEW NUDIST ASSOCIATION
FORMED IN AUSTRALIA
The N. Z. Naturist has recently received information about the formation of a new organization to be known as "The Nudist Association of Victoria". Our information at time of going to press is scant but we hope to have a full report in the next edition. We have been assured that this new Association has not been formed with any intention of offering competition or opposition to the Australian Nudist Federation but rather to complement that Federation and to further the cause of nudism in Victoria particularly and Australia generally.

Sunshine & Health Club (Cairns), Queensland This is an introductory note to let you know about what we hope will be a naturist club for the north of Australia. For some time now there has been a group of people who are obviously interested in naturism here - at least, judging from certain beaches at the weekends, so we got together and held a meeting with the idea of forming a club. There were about 20 people present including two family groups and some married couples. We have quite a few beaches and from about Trinity Beach onwards there are numerous "turn offs" which lead to quiet beaches which are used by various groups, and individuals for swimming and sunbathing 'au naturel". Now it is our hope to get these people together to form a club. This is the one place in Australia which should have a naturist club as we have the most ideal weather for about 9 months of the year when you can get out in the sun every weekend, or even during the week if you are one of the lucky ones who do not have to work for a living. Unfortunately, about this time of the year is the marine stinger season, and this can curtail one's activities. So right now we are looking around to see if we can spot a river site where the stingers are not present. |
The Three Bears Sun Club, Queensland We are now into our second year, and have accomplished much more than we had expected and this was due to everyone who has had anything to do with The Three Bears. Some things have not gone quite as we would have liked, (does everything always go as one would like?) but we have learned quite a lot. Going through the visitors book we find the following: We have had 250 people visit the club (first visit only counted) 55 groups were from other Sun Clubs: 21 groups being from different clubs in England, Canada and Australia. On the 23rd June The Three Bears went to Eureka and had many games of Miniten and Volley ball and being the shortest Sunday (daylight wise) we hope we can visit them again when the days are longer. Eureka came to the Three Bears on 28th July on a return visit and it being our First Birthday, we made a dual purpose. We had a large bucket of ice cream and bottles of drinks for the children. The Birthday Cake featured the Three Bears. There were many laughs and no one had to be asked to keep back while the egg throwing game was on. We were fortunate to have the A.N.F. President Sandy, at our First Birthday and during afternoon tea he brought everyone up to date on free beaches etc. around Australia. |

what a way to go |
The local Sun Club was a hive of industry on this sunny Sunday. A working-bee was in full swing, if you'll excuse the pun. The brats were busy splashing around in the paddling pool, most of the mums were lying around sunbathing with one eye on the brats; and we men (or us men), were busy building a swimming pool. All in nudist uniform, of course. Our working bee was split into two parts. The jokers below, and one or two ladies, were laying and cementing bricks into the side of the pool. I was in the upper working party. Our job was to load bricks and mortar into the contraption known rudely as a flying fox. This was a cunning device consisting of a half-oil-drum, suspended by wires from a hauling wire. As the pool was below us, it was no trouble to send the cradle of bricks scooting down below, the only trouble was that, if unrestrained, the cradle could accelerate quickly to round about the speed of sound. (There was a decline of about 30 degrees, and a distance of about two hundred yards - unless you have gone metric already in which case don't bother). To overcome this acceleration lark, we had a thin wire (restraining), which we paid out from a brake drum. The idea was that we would send the thing out on it's merry way, and about twenty yards from its destination we would slowly apply the brake. To return the contraption, we had a winder handle. The whole thing was a typical work of Kiwi ingenuity and improvisation. If you think those are big words ... read on. |
After many hours of toil, came the last load of bricks, which we loaded into the cradle. As an afterthought, old jack, who would be seventy if he was a day, loaded some bottles of mineral water into the cradle, along with the bricks. "Those jokers will have a good thirst on by now," he said. "I tell you what. When we bring back the empty cradle, I think I'll have a ride in it myself. Save walking down." "I wouldn't do that," said Tom, "The thing might break." "No show, I don't weigh anywhere near as much as a load of bricks, and we haven't lost a brick yet." This was quite true ... as of this moment, as the politicians say. We shot off the last load on its merry way, and applied the brake, about twenty yards from its destination. There was nothing wrong with the brake, but the restraining wire broke. "Look OUT!!!" "Scatter!" "Get the Hell OUT!!!" ... and such cries echoed round the valley. The scene down below was like an excerpt from one of the old comedies. You know, where they speed the action up to about twice the normal. Naked bricklayers, and bricklayeresses, scattering and leaping to the shelter of the nearest trees and bushes. Then the resounding crash as the cradle madly bashed into the terminus post. Glass, bubbling lolly-water, and broken bricks flying in all directions. Followed a pregnant silence as we recovered our breath. "Where's jack, it's his turn next," said Tom quietly. "Gone for a beer," said young Willie. John H. Worth |
