GUEST EDITORIAL
As a member of Con's editorial team, one becomes more concerned with the criticism of the magazines content. My observations, supported by sales figures, is that what you are reading, caters to a number of separate and distinct interest groups.
These groups can be divided into three main groups. Of the two minor groups the Clubs' members account for 19.9% of sales and in return are given a public relations outlet, executive and club news on a national level and a pictorial account of major happenings and people within the movement.
Of the remainder, 5.6% go to private subscribers who are, largely, an unknown group.
The balance of sales, 74.5% are bought in shops. (This figure fluctuates depending on numbers of unsold books returned and the number printed). It would seem obvious that this major group finances the high standard of presentation of the first group's needs. It stands to reason that we must either fulfil some of their needs or lower our standard of presentation so that the clubs, alone, can finance their needs, e.g. newsprint, something I wouldn't like to see.
I believe the present content satisfies the needs of each of these groups but could be improved by the deletion of Club News (a function already fulfilled at club level) replaced by more stimulating articles of general interest.
So club members, it IS our magazine but remember, to keep the standard up we must keep the standard up.
As Australia now has some Free Beaches and they are coming closer to reality here, we have devoted most of this issue to them. Perhaps our minority group is being heard more favourably than that other minority group.

ROLY BEATSON
We were saddened to learn of the death in August, of Mr. Roly Beatson. Roly and Anne joined Auckland Outdoor Health Club about eleven years ago, having previously belonged to Kaurimu Sun Club for four years. Roly was a staunch and loyal supporter of the movement and provided a service of inestimable value with his First Aid Tent at many of the Rallies.
A SHORT HISTORY OF FREE BEACHES IN
NEW ZEALAND By EMIEL ROLAND
The concept of the "free beach" is not new. In pre-missionary days, Polynesians and Melanesians in the South Pacific regarded nudity as something natural and were proud of their bodies. With the spread of the gospel came the great body cover up, with clothing from neck to ankles. The body, instead of being a respected object, became a less than polite item of discussion. Unfortunately this narrow, prudish view, still holds sway in certain groups in our society today, but a larger, more enlightened group today, is thinking for itself and making its own decisions, and that is what the struggle for free beaches is all about.
Remember in the old days, the discussion and debates about "nudism" and "naturism". Nobody bothers much with it any more. The word "nudism" has attained respectability and is acceptable in daily conversation. So too are the words 'free beach', everybody, for or against know what those two words mean.
Earlier editions of the N.Z. Naturist carried stories of nude swimming and sunbathing at isolated beaches. In No. 49 Summer 1968 there appeared an elaborate proposal to storm our beaches by demonstration! Visits to Pakiri in the North, Waiheke Island and beaches near Wellington were regarded as normal. The only mishap I'm aware of was in the summer of 1968 when police acted on a complaint of nude bathing at Ohau Beach, but no prosecutions arose from this incident.
In 1970 the N.Z.S.A. executive decided to request the authorities for a change of the law so as to permit "free beaches". In 1971 the N.Z.S.A. decided to transfer the organisation for free beaches to Auckland. There were favourable articles in the press. Then in March 1971 a break through with the first radio Hauraki/Heylen Public Opinion Poll on Free Beaches. The results were 47.7% in agreement with a "free beach", 50.9% against. In the 18-39 years group 59.4% voted in favour. The results of this poll received favourable comment from the news media. In 1971 another Heylen Poll confirmed results of the earlier poll. This too received wide coverage in the news media. At this time we had taken to informing the local authorities, M.P., and Police when an organised "free beach" trip was held. This saw the emergence of the "beware we bare" signs.
Submissions to the Auckland Regional Authority Parks & Reserves Committee were fruitless, on the grounds of Article 47 of the Police Offences Act 1927. A venture to buy land at Pakiri Beach foundered when the property under offer was sold to other buyers. In the meantime trips to Uretiti, West Coast Beaches and around the Manukau Harbour gained in popularity.
At the Christmas 1972/3 rally at "Oranui", which was opened by the then Minister of Justice, Dr Martin Finlay and Sir Dove Meyer Robinson, Mayor of Auckland, the Minister suggested we make proposals to the Parliamentary Select Committee, for alterations to the Police Offences Act. Our submission was received and accepted by the select committee in 1975. It was due to be submitted to the house for debate in early 1976 but the change of Government, in November 1975, put a stop to that.
The beginning of 1974 saw the appearance of our first car sticker for "Go Nude, Free Beaches for N.Z." November 1974 saw the first of our successful weekends at Port Ohope Motor Camp. These received wide news media publicity. Unfortunately this venue is closed to us now for purely commercial reasons.
In February 1974 the first official "Free Beach" was declared in South Australia, others have followed in Darwin, A.C.T. and Sydney. In N.Z. we are still trying for our first official "Free Beach".
In August 1975 a free beach group was formed as a separate entity from established nudist clubs. The membership is growing and the future looks bright. A lot has been achieved in only nine years. The Heylen Poll in May 1975 showed 63.6% in favour of "Free Beaches" and 33.4% against. We have always conducted our "Free Beach" outings in a responsible manner and we feel that this fact has been noted by the authorities and the general public. Our campaign continues and will be pursued with vigour this summer season.
SURF CLUBS v. THE SUN LOVERS
On just about any Sunday over the busy summer months surf teams are being called out to leave the patrolled area, either on foot or on a mobile unit, to check out a group of swimmers who are risking their lives swimming away from the patrolled area.
When the patrol gets there the chances are they are either a couple, a family or often quite a large group who are enjoying the surf without their togs. The situation is becoming quite serious on Auckland beaches such as Muriwai, Kare Kare or Bethells. These are the beaches that offer privacy and superb scenic surroundings.
The patrol can be called out two or three times a day and without a doubt before the sun goes down, tempers become slightly frayed. Generally, by the time the patrol gets there, the swimmers may have left the water. For four times last year, by the time the patrol got to the swimmers, one or two were in difficulty.
I do know that many of your club members feel that surf clubs tend to hound them a bit and over-react when they see a group of swimmers heading towards the water.
I would like to point out the New Zealand surf clubs feel an immense sense of responsibility to the swimming public and I would like to explain a little on what is involved in running a surf club and maintaining a professional patrol on a busy and dangerous beach.
While making no apologies for the man on the patrol tower, whose average age is seventeen and who has been sitting up there for two or three hours with binoculars, who decides to start spotting sun lovers in the sand hills. The modern patrolman is an enthusiastic, extremely fit lifeguard who is giving up his free time and ability to maintain a vigilance which is world recognised.
The New Zealand Association has endeavoured to put a full patrol from Labour weekend until Easter, on all major beaches where there is a large swimming population and dangerous water conditions. These patrols are professional in their training which combines first aid, water rescue techniques and resuscitation.
Membership in all New Zealand surf clubs is on a voluntary basis and except for local body grants, most local clubs struggle to buy equipment and maintain their clubhouses by their own fundraising efforts. If the summer is lousy and the surf either huge rollers or totally non-existent, the patrol hours can become very dreary and the work often monotonous. Nevertheless, patrols are maintained to a very high standard.
Patrol hours are rigidly kept to Saturdays 12-5 p.m., Sundays 9-5 p.m. All public holidays likewise throughout the summer season. In Auckland the Association maintains summer patrols on fourteen Auckland beaches.
On the West Coast, a jet boat and helicopter provide a backup service to the busy beaches. All clubs on the West Coast are in radio telephone contact with each other. They can summon assistance from the helicopter or jet boat at a moment's notice. To maintain the high standard of patrols, beach inspectors, selected by the Association, regularly tour all the Auckland beaches on a weekly basis. Each club visited must demonstrate a rescue, a cardiac massage and answer ten oral questions. The penalty for not having an efficient patrol can be $100 fine or the forfeiture of competition events.
Each day the patrol must report by radio telephone to the base at Piha. They give the number of swimmers, the water temperature and the surf conditions. Thanks to the sponsored travel grants, many members of Auckland's clubs are able to travel to the USA and Australia working in patrol units in these countries and bringing back information and new techniques in rescue and resuscitation. Thus, probably without being aware of it, the Auckland swimming public are benefiting from an immense backup of skill and professionalism carried out by young New Zealanders who give up their free time every weekend for the cause of surf life saving.
Many of these youngsters join a beach because of its surroundings or surf conditions. They are very loyal to the club and the beach and you will find them very tolerant of the privacy you seek there. Club members are sympathetic to the beach users. We realise that the beaches and the water are for people to enjoy. You will find surf club members informative about beach conditions, bush walks and information about the beach and surrounding country but I cannot emphasise enough the responsibility club members feel about swimmers.
They are aware of beach conditions at all times of the day. The Association believes that prevention is far more effective than a major rescue attempt. Often the swimmer, in knee-deep water, can suddenly find himself swept out into the big surf within a matter of minutes. Extreme caution must always be taken while wading or swimming on West Coast beaches. The patrol flags are more than just a swimming lane.
They are set out by the patrol early each day and they move up and down the beach as the conditions vary. Often the patrol flags can be set only 100 yards apart in the only safe place for swimming on the beach.
Between the flags, swimmers can bathe in comparative safety under the watchful eye of the patrolman and his backup team. Most clubs now use flippers and the American rescue tube to speed up rescue. The reel and line is used now only for rescues in big surf with heavy rip conditions.
We would ask your members to note the following surf guidelines:
On West Coast beaches with rolling surf, never attempt to swim in the calmer areas. Here are deep holes scoured out by undertows and rips. Never swim where the water appears to be calm.
If one of your party needs assistance, only the strongest swimmer of the group should attempt to rescue. If possible, use flippers and firstly ensure that someone in your party is obtaining help. Too many fatalities start with one person in trouble and finish up with three or four.
Do not swim alone and do not try to judge the tide. It is a fallacy to believe that incoming surf is safer than outgoing. On the East Coast, because of its calmness, people believe it is safer. In many instances this is not true at all. East Coast beaches tend to drop very steeply to deep water and this is compounded if there is a larger or heavy shore break with heavy dumping waves. Undertow and rips can be just as fierce on the East Coast as the West. If one of your party is caught in a rip, float beyond the break until assistance can be obtained.
At all times watch children carefully and check with locals about a beach you are not sure of. Because of the number of fatalities that have occurred in groups of school children over the years, the Auckland Association will provide fully trained lifeguard complete with rescue equipment to supervise any group. The charge is $15 a day plus lunch and bookings for a lifeguard for your group can be made through the Auckland Surf Life Saving Association Headquarters, phone 378-495.
The American Neoprene rescue tube, an invaluable part of your equipment can be obtained from the Auckland Association at $35 a piece and this, complete with flippers will form a rescue unit in themselves. Up to three people can be towed with this rescue tube or a single patient can be placed in it and returned to safety.
Enjoy the summer and New Zealand's fine beaches but before you swim, please check with your local surf club. It could save a great deal of anguish later.

15th I.N.F. CONGRESS REPORT
This was held on the grounds of the Rhein-Main Club "Ponderosa" which is situated on an island in the River Rhine, close to the City of Wiesbaden, but well away from the hustle and bustle of City life. The weather was kind and every effort was made by the host club to make the delegates and their families feel at home.
After the welcoming addresses and the official opening, which was attended by local dignitaries and a large number of journalists, we soon settled down to the various business sessions. I will not bore you with a verbatim report of the discussions, but will instead try and give impressions of what the I.N.F. is trying to achieve.
The retiring President of the INF, Mr. M. Caillaud, in his address, spoke about the progress Naturism had made during the last two years. He spoke for many minutes on the report of our P.R.O. which was well received. He mentioned the results of our recent opinion Poll. concerning free Beaches in New Zealand and he also expressed the wish that we liaise with the Secretariat to an even greater extent.
As in all organisations, finance, or more to the point, the lack of finance, made it difficult for the IN F to operate as extensively as it desired and ways and means were discussed of increasing income without it becoming an additional burden on the various National Federations.
Delegates were requested to discuss with their own Federations the desirability and possibility of introducing the NE passports and stamps to all members of clubs as proof of their Club as well as National and International membership. This would not only increase the income of the INF, but it would also reduce the workload of the various Federation Secretaries who often have to rush INF passports to members travelling overseas. After the initial issuing of the passport, and having it stamped with the Clubs Stamp, each further years subscription could be receipted with an INF stamp. Two countries have already adopted this system, and it is working well, if this idea is adopted, for New Zealand, our levy to the INF by the NZSA would be discontinued.
Commercial and holiday naturism was fully discussed and it is now considered to be an essential part of the Naturist Movement as a whole. During the 1974 Congress the wish was brought forth that an organisation should be created in order to handle Naturist Tourism, independent of the existing Commercial Organisations. This wish became reality and in the beginning of 1976 the Tourena Club Nature started operations in various European Countries. It is still too early to provide concrete results, but it gives us something to think about. The INF considers the holiday naturist to be of great importance to the movement alongside the club naturist. The Federations are requested that these holiday naturists be considered as true naturists. A different type of passport may be issued by the INF to cater for these people. This will take nothing from the autonomy of the clubs. We must realise here, that our isolation has prevented commercial or holiday naturism to take hold, but it will not be long before there will be a demand for it. The Tourena Club Nature has already made tentative enquiries, as to the possibility of accommodating groups of touring naturists in New Zealand Clubs, while passing through this country on a Pacific Tour.
During the discussions it was apparent that the present method of allocating votes during the Congress has become unbalanced. Out of a total number of approx. 550 votes Germany has 166 votes and France 114 votes. Therefore, no matter what the rest of the world felt about a certain issue, if France and Germany voted the same way, their votes would decide the issue.
Your delegate pointed out, that if votes could be allocated on the basis of the number of clubs per, say 1 million people, this anomaly would disappear.
Both France and Germany agreed that some changes would have to be made and it was left to the executive to come up with a good solution during the next two years.
Well, how can all this help to further our cause in the Pacific Basin? I am sure that the fact that we belong to such a world wide Association alone, will help in pressing for our rights to be heard.
On the issue of Free Beaches, it must help Emiel Roland to know that throughout the world other Naturists are wishing us well in our efforts to obtain free beaches so that we may enjoy ourselves without hindrance. After all, we don't all want to water ski, but ski-lanes have been made readily available for water skiing enthusiasts. Why should our efforts meet so many obstacles, when even smaller sections of the community have their wishes granted so easily?
Bruce McAllister, the Australian Delegate and I hope that our presence at the 15th World Congress gave the European Delegates a better insight into the affairs of Naturism in this part of the world.
I would like to finish with a few words from our new President of the I.N.F. Frank Mollaert, who expressed himself as follows in a letter to the Federations dated the 13th September 1976.
"There was an element of the Congress which struck me personally very deeply and perhaps will not in the congress report have the place it deserves. I think of the place of sport in naturists clubs.
"We opened our Congress at the moment when the Olympic Games drew to a close. The little sports demonstration devised by the committee of the Rhein-Main Club and their President Fritz Klein was in reality an anti-olympiad and a warning that we should never attempt to imitate the Olympics themselves. This little sports demonstration for everybody, with joy, good humour and with no other care than for the well-being of everyone, was, in my opinion the real lesson of this Congress. It also struck me that for the finale the club committee had devised a water ballet, which was not a demonstration of professionalism or of faultless technique, but once again a demonstration of spontaneous joy and a manifestation of the pleasure that one can get from practising sports and games. Sports, games, movement in the open air, practised by all ages, without an excessive spirit of competition, but with the aim of ensuring the well-being of all; these are the essential elements of our movement. It is my preoccupation to spread these ideas wider among the organisations and clubs; and we will certainly be asking you to work together with us in the months and years to come for the well-being of all the world."

IMPRESSIONS OF THE 15th I.N.F.
CONGRESS
The 15th World Congress of the International Nudist Federation. What a tremendous experience this was. John and I were more fortunate than the other delegates as we had a week at the Ponderosa (the German Sun Club near Wiesbaden where the Congress was to be held). before the delegates from the other 21 countries began to arrive. We were therefore able to get to know the local people and to help a little with the preparations. I was extremely impressed with the organisation of this Club, for there was very little left to the last moment. Having been a member of a host club for our Annual Rally, the relaxed atmosphere and unhurried attitude was in direct contrast to my experience in New Zealand
Three meals a day for delegates, their wives and families were catered for at a reasonable cost per meal, but there were no morning and afternoon teas for the delegates during their working sessions. And these continued for five days!
Entertainment in the evenings consisted of dancing and drinking in the German Style, colour slide screenings by visiting delegates, Jazz concerts for those who were interested, or just sitting around and enjoying the lovely warm evenings along the River Rhine.
For the final evening, all the children and teenagers performed a most spectacular Water Ballet with Fireworks as a Finale. These children had practised for three months. It was so impressive that I was moved to wonder how we could ever have been involved in a war with these delightful people.
During the day there were sports, but not competitive as in our Rallies. Miniten was demonstrated by an English team. Hand ball, fluegel ball, volley ball and swimming were demonstrated by the Host Club. All participants were fairly expert, particularly in volleyball, but somehow the lack of competition took the excitement away for the spectator.
A group of young women from the Host Club performed a very beautiful gymnastic display put to music for which they too had practised for many weeks. The Business side of the Congress was extremely well organised. Professional interpreters provided instant translation in English, French and German to individual earphones, as in the United Nations.
It was really great to discover that New Zealand rates fifth in the world in Clubs per Country, so even though we had to travel from the other side of the world, New Zealand has a very real place in the scheme of things.
The last day, all delegates and wives were taken on a sightseeing tour of the surrounding districts. This included a visit to the Champagne cellars of the Kupferberger Winery, a lovely lunch and wine tasting interlude at the new Headquarters of the DFK, and it concluded with a fabulous dinner, served in 15th Century style, with a dagger and a wooden spoon as eating utensils. The building was an old castle, and the waiters and waitresses were dressed in 15th century costumes. It was a very fitting ending to the tremendous experience of the 15th World Congress.

N.Z.S.A. OFFICERS REPORT
President IAN FAIRBROTHER
Perhaps it has been because of an unusual amount of publicity on Nudism recently in my home area. Perhaps it is because we are lucky in having a few extrovert members, but the inquiries and increased interest from the public have been pleasing. This has not always been the case and it makes me wonder that instead of being proud of and honest about our clubs, we may be all to reticent when it comes to discussing the above.
It could be, with all the refinements, comforts and sports facilities that a lot of clubs have we have a tendency to be quite happy not to want to share our amenities. The best way of making any movement grow and flourish quickly is by its own members speaking to people whenever the situation presents itself. Those who haven't tried will find the experience very rewarding. So "Speak Up".
Women's Representative JENNIFER FAIRBROTHER
Once again Rally time is drawing near. It is an important one this time as it is not only the Silver Anniversary of the Rallies themselves but also of our host club, Wellington Sun Club. I thought a few tips here would help those who have not attended a Rally before and perhaps help even those who are regulars. Cooking under camp conditions - pressure cookers are a boon. Not only for the users but especially for the people who are waiting to use the element after you! Those queues at the club cook house do look long at times! Electric fry-pans make wonderful stoves but do drag on the power supply. A good tightly covered roasting pan over a gas ring with an asbestos mat is a good oven too. I have seen them with small vents like the fry-pan lids have. One-pan-meals are great time savers and not much washing up to do either. On the inventors show on TV in September was a wonderful barbeque that heated water. It is amazing how much can be cooked on a barbeque and with one like this there is no need to worry about boiling a kettle. Let's hope they are on the market soon.
Mothers of young children who are not toilet trained, here is an earnest request. To assist the host club and others using the grounds you should make sure you keep that so trouble-some part of their anatomy well padded and covered. Disposable napkins. Expensive? But what a cheap holiday the Rally really is, surely this small expense must save hours of hanging around the laundry queue, and a saving on water too. The cold water soap powders are a must. Don't forget sun hats and lotions, especially for the littlies who are running around all day in the sun. An important tip here from a past victim. Bring plenty of insect repellant for the 4pm rush of those most unpopular visitors to the Wellington nudists' grounds! Happy Rally Everyone.
READERS PHOTOGRAPH COMPETITION
Starting with our December issue, we are inviting readers to submit their nudist photographs which will be featured in a special section of the magazine. Colour transparencies or black and white prints may be submitted, but not colour prints. The winner will receive a prize of photographic materials to the value of $25.00.
COLOUR: For this section 2/4 square is the best put 35 pm will be accepted. Slides must be sharp. With 35 mm the subject must fill the frame. Normal exposure isn't good enough either, it is recommended that you underexpose by about half a stop, this gives richer, warmer tones that are better for reproduction. |
or 10 by 8 inches but any good quality, sharp print is acceptable except Polaroid shots. The ideal print will be printed on glossy paper but will not be glazed. Good contrast is required with a full range of tones from a deep rich black through to a fine bright highlight. No allover greys wanted or any of those "Soot and Whitewash" prints done in a hurry. We want to be able to print every entry to it's best advantage. |
|
BLACK AND WHITE: For this section we recom-mend that the prints submitted be 7 by 5 inches |
All entries must be accompanied by a model release signed by everybody in the photograph, or in the case of children by the parents of each child in the picture. The judges decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the results of the competition.
Dear Sir, It was with a great deal of interest and 'deja vu' we read the article "The Uniform Always Fits" in the October edition. This same analogy was used by this Club in determining its policy in relationship to acceptance of members. With Free Beaches gaining acceptance, the Nudist movement has more and more people enquiring and wishing to continue their experiences of the free beaches year round, which, in many cases, can only be done by joining organised clubs. A lot of the people using free beaches are single persons or married persons without their spouses (men AND women), who behave in a proper and genuine manner. It was felt by members of our club in its formative stages that we should offer membership to these people as well as family groups. Despite 'predictions', we have not been inundated with 'single-marrieds' - far from it. Our family membership has increased at a far greater rate as many families today see no point in restrictive membership procedures and this has been a reason for them not joining clubs in the past. Many of our members joined us from the free beach and they are true Nudists - Nudists with a complete nudist lifestyle and ideals, a freedom of thought which is encouraged by non-organised nudist activities, i.e., believing that what they are doing with regard to nudist activities is the correct thing to do and does not need the sanction of a group or club, and lacking the 'restrictive' and 'possessive' thinking unfortunately, but understandably, found in many clubs formed during the times when nudism was not acceptable to the public in general. Times change and Nudist Clubs should keep aware of the changes in society and be prepared to move with them. We felt that if we wanted the acceptance a golf club has, (i.e., ordinary) then we had to have rules similar to that golf club. Golfers join golf clubs to enjoy golf... Nudists join nudist clubs to enjoy nudism. It was delightful the way John Hemsworth had captured the ludicrous arguments in his article and we only hope other nudists do not read it just as a funny story. Only by acting in a 'normal' way will we be given 'normal' status. While clubs continue some of their outdated policies, they will still be considered a "secret society", gaining the undesirable comments they are trying to avoid. |
On the same hand, it is gratifying to see more and more clubs willing to 'get out' and to show what we are all about, but we still need more willing to change. Maybe we all need the reminder that one of the main aims in almost all Club constitutions is 'to further the cause of Nudism', and free beaches open nudism to a much greater number of people. Rather than this being used as an argument against accepting single members, it should be seen as a way of gaining worth while new members to the organised movement. We sincerely hope "The Uniform Always Fits" will give an incentive to other clubs to up-date their policies; and we think they may be pleasantly surprised if they do. Rick Venning (President) for A.C.T. Nudist Club.
Dear Sir, A special section for readers' nudist photographs is welcome. We will be seeing a variety of viewpoints of the nudist life. I eagerly look forward to the December issue. I hope the photographs will be showing nudists of all shapes and ages living life naturally unclothed. Too many photographs in naturist magazines are posed, and some obviously do not depict nudist situations. And too many are of young pretty girls. What about the vast majority of nudists? In reality we are all ages, shapes, sizes and sexes. Why now show truer pictures? What keeps lots of people back from even considering being nudists is that they feel they would be ashamed of their bodies when they are naked. This magazine's concern must be to show them that there is no shame in being unclothed. Nudism for them becomes a possibility when they see nudists with similar shapes and sizes. I like the nudist photographs of pretty girls which are natural and unposed (that is, not artificially contrived). I commend the cover photographs of Issue No. 80. It is unfortunate, however, that this magazine is on display for sale with the pornographic and "girlie" magazines of the newsagents. We all know this is a problem. How about having cover photographs of men, women and children of all ages, shapes and sizes? Leena, Australia |

KOWHAI VALLEY CLUB INC. We are proud to report that our sauna is complete and operating. There is room, comfortably for 10 adults at a time and it has proved very popular when those cool south westerlies blow in off the sea. The dedication of a few keen, hardworking members who gave of time, money and materials brought this project to fruition. To them goes the thanks of us all at K.V.C. The A.G.M. on 10th October gave us a committee with women outnumbering the men for the first time. Who knows we may be able to emulate other clubs and elect a woman president in 1977. Our recruiting for new members (see advert in this issue) is going well. Present thinking is to hold another open day early in the new year as a follow up on our November open day. Annual rally time is nearly with us, so next issue we will be able to give comments on that occasion. Hope the weather is better than in Auckland 1975/76.
AURORA SUNSKEEKERS INC. The winter season here at Aurora has been a busy time all round. On the social scene we have held a couple of informal socials which were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our regular fortnightly sauna evening has continued, warmly supported, and during Spring we recommenced our weekly swim evening at a local swimming pool. The club has been fortunate in receiving a donation of some furniture for our clubrooms, which will go a long way to improving the amenities at the grounds. We would like to congratulate our neighbours the Orchard Sun Club on gaining affiliation to the N.Z.S.A. We hope that they have many happy years in the association. All members are now looking forward to the summer holidays and the opportunity to relax and enjoy themselves. |
AUCKLAND OUTDOOR HEALTH CLUB With the festive season almost upon us again many members will be looking forward to their vacation. Over the past two to three months some effort has gone into sprucing up the grounds at "Oranui" as we anticipate the usual large number of campers and visitors. Several Australian club members have already indicated their wish to visit our club during the Xmas New Year period. We hope their stay will be an enjoyable one. 1976 in retrospect has not passed without some incidents. Vandalism in particular has hit us 3 times during the latter months giving us some concern and over the winter and spring months our stream flooded 3 times which, on one occasion nearly stranded the committee for the night after a brief torrential downpour. Up to the time of writing social functions have been the centre of attention for most members. At our club house the nudist youth club teenagers set the ball rolling with an excellent "Soup and Savoury" evening which was very well supported and a tremendous success for all concerned. For entertainment at our next social a professional discotheque Band was engaged. This brought a large number of members and friends along also. Arrangements have already been made for their return to our Pre-Xmas Social. Outside the grounds regular members who patronised a Western Suburbs Sauna establishment were feted to a wine and cheese evening recently by the proprietor and at Riccardos in Parakai a smorgasbord evening concluded the winter scene which was organised by North Shore Sun Club and supported by some of our members. As one can see from this calendar of events there has been plenty to choose from. In fact we can safely say that, in congenial company a pleasant atmosphere was observed by all. The last major gathering of the year is our "National Rally." Although it is not known what numbers are likely to be attending we can assure 'Wellingtonians" that competition by A.O.H.C. will not be taken lightly. Well, that's all the news for now. Committee wish to extend all members seasons greetings and Best Wishes for the coming year. |

WELLINGTON SUN CLUB For the third consecutive year the winter rainfall in Wellington has been well above average and, as in the previous winters, most of that liquid seems to have fallen at week-ends. Despite this, though, pretty good progress has been made in preparation for the coming Rally season. One Sunday, early in Spring, our secretary was seen wandering up and down the main lawn, looking deadly serious and flinging hands full of what appeared to be dry fish bait around him (This is not as implausible as it sounds; only a few days earlier most of that area HAD been under water!) The fertilizer, as it was, worked its magic over the following week and lo-and-behold, the next Sunday showed a vigorous, thick, green sward, CRISS-CROSSED BY DOZENS OF CRESCENT SHAPED BURNT PATCHES! Many a head shook sadly at the prospects for grass at the Rally, but the lawn astonished us all by recovering just as quickly. Now the mowing gang's complaining! We actually managed a quorum for the October Half A.G.M., something that hasn't happened for years. Whether or not this means a genuine awakening of interest in the running of the club remains to be seen. Anyway, those of you who can join us for the Rally are assured of a warm (emotion-wise) welcome and a fun time. We hope to come up with something this time that has never been tried before at one of our gatherings. |
EAST COAST SUN CLUB First of all I would like to mention that we are the East Coast Sun Club based in Gisborne, not East Coast Bays Club (I stand being corrected but East Coast Bays are on the North Shore of Auckland.) The weather being adverse most weekends, activities at our grounds has been non-existent during the winter but shindigs in members homes have taken its place. A very successful "POT LUCK" evening was held recently, this would be a great money spinner for larger clubs. Six members travelled to Rotorua for the B.O.P. Cabaret, great band, good supper and a very enjoyable crowd all in all a terrific evening, we can see that this "do" will become a must in the sun club cabaret circuit. It vas great to see the contingent from the Manawatu club a great effort from a club so far away. On the way home we stopped off at the B.O.P. grounds to wet the roof of the new club-house a very big crowd had the same idea, in fact if the band had turned up we could have carried on from the night before. More recent still some of us drove to the local hot springs, another enjoyable evening and it was no mean feat to fit six adults and two and two thirds children in the private pool. Activities like these have kept up club interest while waiting for summer to arrive. We wish to thank all those clubs that forward us their newsletters to keep us in touch with events in other clubs. See you at Wellington Rally. |
BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB INC. The big news of the day for our club is that we have now got our clubhouse. It wasn't easy, but we have got it. The committee, elected in August, set for itself the goal of having the clubhouse on site. During this time we have had to scrap some of the original ideas when our supply of materials ceased to be a reality, but as one door closed in front of us another opened, and all in time for us to have an informal opening the day following our Cabaret in September, the local radio gave us good front line news on both occasions. Talking about our Annual Cabaret, what a terrific time we all had, but if you want to know how it went, we'll leave it over to you to ask someone who went. A terrific representation from many clubs in the North Island, with particularly large numbers coming from North Shore, Manawatu and Rotorua Clubs, we thank you all for coming, we enjoyed your company and remind you that we have booked the same facilities for the same time next year. Well, our socials for 1976 have come and gone, this is a great part of our club programme, where the members of the club can get together, and bring their friends as an informal introduction to the club as well as having a great time. Planning for the 1977 programme is under way with these evening socials starting again in March, if you see our club newsletter and are in the area at the time, do contact us, we'll be only too happy to welcome you.
SOUTH AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC. With a lot of good energy over the winter months we've managed to complete our club house including having the electricity connected. Tra Ia! Our next priority naturally enough was to occupy the kiddies thus enabling parents to relax or do their thing. To this end we've placed our 18' x 6' pool mainly for them, made two flying foxes, a tree house with sandpit underneath and a climbing frame soon to follow. Considering our only advertising is in this magazine and through word of mouth we're happily surprised at our rate of growth this year. Our President and Secretary have been doing 'talks' to local clubs on Nudism in N.Z. and especially our club, with encouraging results and feedback. Try it - it's a lot of fun and good public relations. We've found a different way of fund-raising - supplying nude models to an Art Society. It's fun and earns good money. To finish off we'd like all members of Clubs to know that they are always most welcome to come and visit us on our grounds - no need for application forms - if you know where we are come on out, if not ring up the Secretary and she'll guide you there. |
MANAWATU SUNSEEKERS CLUB How do you do - this is actually another report from us. Well, Manawatu Sunseeker's, despite the wettest winter on record, has had a lot of members join through the winter. Whether it's because we're indulging in a bit of positive thinking trying to will Nature into giving us a decent summer, or whether it's the lure of our almost completed Sauna and Spa pools - we don't know, but keep rolling in - you're very welcome! As I mentioned - we now have the building for our Sauna on site, but not connected yet, and progress is being made on the Hot Spa Pools. All going well, these, plus the Sauna will be ready for our next cold, wet, winter season. A big group of our members went through to Rotorua for the Bay of Plenty Cabaret which was a huge success. Those of us that went are so keen on going to the next one, that we even have one fellow who's thinking of buying a bus so that more can go next year. Thank you, Bay of Plenty, for a great weekend - see you next year. Well despite not having been able to see our grounds for water for some time - they're still there, right in the middle of town and with a 'green and Pleasant look'. All our fifty trees are growing valiantly - some are even poking their heads up above the fence. The clubhouse has almost finished getting its Spring Clean, and work is beginning on the children's playhouse. So don't just think about visiting us - come right along and have a cuppa. Visitors and new members are always welcome, just ring Bev at 71700, or write to P.O. Box 7087 Palmerston North if you want more information.
TARANAKI NATURIST CLUB Our Cabaret has come and gone for another year, and what a terrific night it was. It was attended by on of our local M.P.'s who also visited our grounds the next day, and was most impressed by the progress we have made over the last 4 years, since acquiring our grounds. We recently held our A.G.M., and a keen new committee was elected. We are fervently hoping for a good summer, as we are planning many social events, barbecues, and Gala. Opening of the pool in conjunction with an Open Day, and we are hoping for a good increase in membership. The committee also intends to spruce up the clubhouse, the pool surrounds, the children's play area, and the sports area. The house has been wired for electricity, and is now much more comfortable. We hope that many people from other clubs will come to visit us during the summer holidays, and any other time they are around our way. |

GISBORNE SUN CLUB INC. It seems we missed the last issue so for my sake I hope you're reading this newsletter in the December issue. Therefore I extend a warm although belated thank you to those members of other clubs who made it to our cabaret, It was bound to be a success with the representation there of Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, B.O.P., East Coast members, and indeed it was. We were able to reciprocate with members attending the Wellington, Naki, and B.O.P. cabaret and glowing reports were heard from these. With the winter months behind us the grounds are beginning to dry out the drive has been metalled, and the trees and flowers have really caught the spirit of spring making our one acre indeed beautiful. ("Mecca Narcissus"). On social side, things haven't been quite so waterlogged. Two of our members have just built a hot tub and the club members were invited for a hot tub evening. It's an incredible feeling soaking in the warm water on a cool night with the stars overhead. AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC. We are making great progress with the construction of the next stage of our new clubhouse and hope to have it completed in readiness for the holidays. We had a very successful open day on November 7 when we had thirty or more families visit the grounds. We gained quite a few new members and the exercise proved again the value of a contact phone number in the advertisement. Of the many visitors to the open day only four had written in, all the others made contact by telephone. It was a great success from the public relations angle too. |
THE CHRISTCHURCH NATURIST CLUB (INC) We have just held our first Annual General Meeting although we have only been in existence nine short months. This has been done to enable us to start our year in September and end in August. A new President and two new committee members were elected. We feel our first nine months has seen quite a lot accomplished. Firstly we had a road bulldozed through the grounds to enable us to reach all parts of our 35 acres, then on two separate occasions we employed a grader to level areas for future games courts, play areas, caravan sites etc. We have also planted a few ornamental shrubs, and guess what? another 1000 pine trees. At the time of writing we are in the course of sinking a well and hope to have this operational by December of this year. Money for this project was raised by accepting loans from some of our members. Two of our younger members were married the day prior to our A.G.M., and we wish them every happiness, but we feel that we cannot claim that this is one more accomplishment of the Club. We have very kindly been given a small portable splash pool, and although it is not suitable for the next N.Z. games, it will help us to keep cool when our summer weather arrives. We have unfortunately found it necessary to affix a lock to our gate to restrain intruders. Since the listing of our Club in this magazine we have received several applications for membership and also many welcome newsletters from most of the other Clubs in New Zealand. This we find very encouraging and our thanks go out to all who have aided us. |

THE ORCHARD SUN CLUB INCORPORATED At the time of writing we at The Orchard are vigorously preparing for the promised long hot summer, and a first priority is a hard hitting campaign to boost membership. To this end, The Orchard Club mounted a display stand at "Leisurama", which was a Jaycee promotion in conjunction with the 'Come Alive' committee, to give any club wishing to compete, an opportunity to promote themselves to the general public. We took advantage of our National P.R.O.'s offer to clubs, of a loan of display panels, and these, adorned with suitable photos and Naturist cover pictures, made quite an impressive display. Professional sign writing, and floral decor provided from the Club grounds, set off a display which received much favourable comment. The only item missing to complete the setting, according to a fair number of wits, were the human models in club uniform. Many thanks to Pat Trott for the loan of the display panels we can only now await results. The grounds are looking their best with the completion and grassing of all earthworks, at least for the present, and by the end of October we will have in use a lovely, smooth (and expensive) concrete miniten/volleyball court. This year we expect a nice relaxing summer, with most of the work done for the present, and only normal maintenance to contend with. Visitors from other clubs are welcome anytime, and prospective members need only phone us at the numbers in the back of this magazine to have their inquiries answered. Why not look us up? |
NORTH SHORE SUN CLUB Well twenty three of us sallied forth to join the fray at B.O.P.'s cabaret in Rotorua and the Noisy North managed its "first in the pool at midnight". That was well done B.O.P., nice to meet so many other club members. Come on all other clubs, more of the same please. Our turn was the swim night smorgasbord at Ricardo's, Parakai, and true to the hospitality of the North a great time was had by all. We hope some of the photos came out, they'll be in the next issue, couldn't make the deadline for this one. With the AGM now behind us we welcome Colin L. as our new president. Foundation member Ted E. has relinquished his position on the committee reluctantly as his recovery from his recent operation is slower than he had hoped for. A positive move has been made to acquire and install a swimming pool and you will get news of our grand open day when this happens. This tyro begs your indulgence for his limited information.

PALMERSTON NORTH SUN CLUB NEWS During the winter months many keen members have put many hours of hard work in preparing grounds for our long awaited summer. Boundary fences have been replaced together with general tidying up of grounds. A mini golf course has been laid and should be in operation this summer and judging by the golf putting green used last summer this should be a much used area of the grounds. Four more caravan power boxes have been installed giving power to another twelve caravans. The reformed canal into our temporary club house has been painted and is looking ship shape and very comfortable. We are still looking at plans for a new club house and would welcome any suggestions people might have for a suitable building. Where the old club house was is now in lawn and nothing remains of the charred mess left after the fire. |
The first of our chalets has been erected and it is anticipated that another five will be erected in the near future. Our President has been very busy representing the movement in the proposed new legislation for the enclosing of swimming pools. It appears from reports to hand at this stage from the Standards Committee that the legislation is very complex and it maybe sometime before any decision is made but no doubt Johnny will be keeping everyone informed of any developments. To anyone travelling south to the Wellington Rally, a very warm and hopefully sunny welcome will be made to any members wanting to stop over or even break their journey for a few hours. We wish Wellington all the very best for a successful rally and hope to see some members of other clubs at our Lake Downs property over the vacation. |

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS
A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB The A.C.T. Nudist Club has been formed to provide year round nudist activities for residents of the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding districts, It is a relatively new club, formed early in 1976, but it is growing rapidly and has a friendly and congenial membership from all age groups. Although we have "old" nudists among our members, many others are new to the movement, having joined us from the Kambah Free Beach on the Murrumbidgee River. The influence of the free beach is partly responsible for our policy of acceptance of all members on individual merit. Unlike some other clubs, we do not place quotas or economic sanctions on any group of members. The only requirements for aspiring members are that they are of good character, with a genuine interest in the nudist way of life, and that they abide by the club rules and by-laws. Canberra can be a very chilly place in winter, with nights frequently well below freezing, and cold crisp days. Despite this, we have fulfilled our aim of providing nudist winter activities, by booking a local heated pool complex, complete with five saunas! One evening we had a brief committee meeting in one - a recommended way to keep discussion brief and to the point! We also hold regular social activities and these have included a car rally, barbecues, bowling, dances, film evenings, day trips and an "Eclipse Camping Weekend". In November we are organising a food and publicity stall at a community festival, which we hope will help the image of the movement. We have also been involved in local radio interviews, newspaper articles, advertising and providing guest speakers for community groups. Any fellow nudists passing through Canberra can be assured of a pleasant visit if they care to contact us. We are applying for affiliation with the A.N.F. this year and will have a delegation at the convention with our Brown & Orange flag. We look forward to continuing growth and continuing involvement in our community.

THREE BEARS SUN & HEALTH CLUB, QUEENSLAND Hi once again and seasons greetings to all. During recent months members have participated in various social activities. We can begin, with mentioning that back in August we held an inter club day where 196 people attended. This was made up from visitors from 7 clubs who appeared to thoroughly enjoy the days proceedings. A local radio station announcer visited on October 10th where 50 children were celebrating their special day. Many prizes were presented to them and a large amount of ice cream consumed. Further more our club has had a men's and women's team playing volley ball in the B grade section of the' Brisbane Volley Ball association. The results were, ladies reached the first semi final and our men could only make 5th place. Over 350 leaflets we,re given out to the general public at the "Brisbane Waraa" festival which was aimed at giving a better perspective of our activities. It was a great opportunity which proved quite a success. Our club has received visitors from Italy, Belgium, Holland, New Zealand and most states of Australia over the past few months. To all we hope you enjoyed your stay in sunny Queensland. THE BRINDABELLA SUN CLUB (A.C.T.) I wish to introduce readers to The Brindabella Sun Club formed August 1976 with a foundation membership of eleven families. We are working towards having our own grounds, at present we can offer swim and gym nights, beach and river outings, socials barbecues, interstate club visits. Our first outing a barbecue at Gudgenby was one hundred per cent attended despite the cold winds, showers and near snow conditions which kept everyone dressed accordingly. The gym swim and social eve- flings were well attended and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Yenice and Phillip for making our south coast beach outing a success, they both worked very hard keeping us happy during the wintry long weekend in October. Despite the conditions many members braved the cold winds and went surfing then tried to start their preseason sun tans which resulted in being sand blasted. Join our group membership will be open to single people on a pro-rata basis when our numbers build up. For further information please write to The Secretary P.O. Box 212 Dickson A.C.T. 2607. |

NATURI, N.S.W. Spring has arrived at last and the bushland at Naturi is welcoming the warmth with a glorious display of wild flowers. It is a very relaxing feeling to listen to the songs of hundreds of birds, and see the grand colours of the boronias, grevilleas and dozens of other wild flowers throughout the club grounds. We have gained many new members, and it is likely that many of these have never been so close to nature before. We are happy to welcome Terry and Valerie back from their overseas trip and listen to amusing stories of their travels. Naturi now has an official club badge suitable for attaching to a track suit or hat. We have also on order a metal badge of similar design but without the club name, which can be worn on a neck chain or on a key ring. We have also applied to join the Australian Nudist Federation and our application will be submitted at the coming Convention at Helios in Victoria at Christmas time. Groups from Heritage have visited us twice recently, and enjoyed their visit equally as we have enjoyed having them at our club. We are to visit Hesperides and Heritage clubs very shortly, and are also holding a dinner at the Hawkesbury Inn not far from the club. More social functions are being organised, and our good friend and committee member, Liz, is doing a wonderful job in this field. Interest in sun clubs in Sydney is growing rapidly, and we are getting many enquiries. These are very carefully checked and sorted out. All letters are answered and those mutually acceptable and expressing further interest are then interviewed by committee members and if wanted, a visit to the club is arranged. |
As a result we have welcomed a lot of new members, most of whom have never been in a sun club before. The committee extends to them a hearty welcome, and may they learn in club life just what membership can bring them in happy healthy living among sincere friends. Friendly greetings to our many N.Z. visitors who have been at Naturi over the years, and we hope to welcome more of you this summer.
TINDO CLUB, SOUTH AUSTRALIA Tindo has recently had its Annual General Meeting and elected a new committee to manage its affairs for the next twelve months. The aim of the new committee will be to promote unity within the club and further the name of Tindo within the Australian movement. At present the club is building a patio area with pergola, outside the club house and the barbecues have already been bought aid are ready for installation. We are planning to build a new tennis court before summer which we are hoping will serve the dual purpose of also being a second miniten court. This project will be followed by improving and updating our swimming pool which should be completed before summer. With our new sports portfolio holder Bob, we are again hoping to produce a very competitive volley ball team for the A.N.F. convention in December and hope Tindo will maintain its record of always reaching the final four teams. We also hope to improve our sporting standards for miniten, table tennis, swimming etc. although competing will be more important than winning. We are already looking forward to holding our second outside Nudist Ball in the New Year. |
The A.C.T. Nudist Club, Woden, Australian capital territory has been successful in its application to local government to have an area, approximately 1,000 metres downstream of Kambah Pool, on the Murrumbidgee River, legalised for nude bathing The area was very popular, even though it was not well known to A.C.T. residents. On an average summer day up to 60 nude bathers would go to the area. The club had about 130 members and numbers are expected to increase in summer.
The New South Wales cabinet has decided to allow nude bathing on a trial basis at two Sydney beaches this summer. They are Reaf Beech at Balgowlah Heights and Lady Jane Beach at Watson's Bay.

JOTTINGS FROM THE EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK:
The therapeutic effects of nudity have received a further boost from the University of Iowa. A performance of the award winning play Equus was marred by the hacking, sneezing and coughing of an inconsiderate and unthinking audience. That was until that part of the play was reached where the leading man and leading lady disrobed completely. For eight minutes there wasn't even a sniffle. I wonder what Siggy Freud and his followers would make of that? Most people are not aware of just how much time and effort goes into getting this magazine out on time. |
It is galling to say the least, to learn that some clubs did not distribute the last magazine until up to four weeks after receiving it from us. So how about it you club committees, give us a fair go! * * * The Editorial team were thrilled to receive the following Telegram on 1 September1976. "Congratulations to the team, it has come alive." Ian and Jennifer Fairbrother. |
