EDITORIAL

With the forthcoming Local Body elections, and Parliamentary elections in 1981, the time has come for the New Zealand Nudist Federation to become a political force.

The Free Beach Group has started the move with its campaign to gain Dress Optional Beaches. The campaign needs the backing of every member of the movement.

Remember, that it is your vote that elects the candidate.

They are your representatives, to do and act for you, not to tell you what you can do! as it seems to be on an ever increasing scale internationally. YOU are the power.

A campaign to get OUR representatives to bring about the changes we require in Local By-laws and in 1981 changes to the Statutes and Laws of the land is required.

If we are to succeed we have to counter the power the opposition has got, and to do that will take some work. Another four letter word, which like them all, means exactly what it says, but something not to be afraid of.

Pressure has to be mounted on all candidates to get a committal for our cause, "for, or against". In this way we will soon learn our strength.

Then we lobby. To get anything nowadays you need to use pressure, this has been clearly demonstrated to all. The time to stand up and declare your nudity has come.

We cannot go forth into this decade with the same approach as we had in the seventies.

If changes are to be made, they have to be made NOW!

BANGALEE

Ryk

Travelling for the first time to Australia I was determined to experience what I could of nudism there. Issue No. 92 of "New Zealand Naturist" had a half-page account of what seemed a very attractive place, "Border River Nudist Farm", but the only clue to its location, 100 yards form the River Murray", was not very helpful, as the river forms the Victoria-N.S.W. border for over 1000 kilometres. I therefore decided, on arriving in Melbourne, to get in touch with The Helios Society, the Club nearest to where we were staying. When I rang the number given in N.Z.N. a recorded voice invited me to ring a service number if I wanted information on the number I was ringing. On doing so I was told the number listed was not correct, and was given two others. As I notice that the latest N.Z.N. still carries the wrong number anyone wishing to contact The Helios Society should ring 2771995 during business hours or 5512269 after hours.

I had quite a chat with Phil, the Membership Secretary, who invited us to visit, but it so happened that the first two Sundays of our stay were wet. When I asked Phil about River Valley Nudist Holiday Resort (not Border River) he told me that the ANF had withdrawn its approval because of some indiscretion on the part of the proprietors, but recommended a visit to Bangalee, which he described as an offshoot of River Valley. So it was that a few days later, in the course of a tour by car along the Murray River Highway, we found ourselves looking for Bangalee.

It was not hard to find. Our map showed Tocumwal as just across the river (in N.S.W.) from the town of Cobram (in Victoria). As a sidelight to this story it should be mentioned that the Victorian government is trying to keep out the fruit fly which plagues its northern neighbours. For this purpose there are checkpoints set up on the main road where they cross the border.

Driving from Cobram we passed the checkpoint then crossed the river by way of a combined road-rail bridge, very old and decrepit-looking and quite out of place in the very good Victorian road system. Straight after the bridge was Tocumwal - 5 or 6 shops, a pub, a post office and very little else except a riverside park containing old vehicles, guns and other relics.

Phil had given me a number to ring from Melbourne - 058741211 Ext. 31 - but on going to the Tocumwal Post Office I found that it had a manual telephone exchange and all I had to do was ask for number 31, which was listed in the directory. A cheery voice answered me; its owner said she was not one of the proprietors but, yes, we were welcome, yes, there was a caravan for hire, don't worry, anything we didn't have they'd lend us. True Aussie hospitality! The instructions were to return to the bridge, cross it, and turn to the right (west) on the first dirt road, which was between the bridge and the fruit fly check-point. This we did, and after following the smooth clay road for 2km came to the entrance gate of Bangalee.

As it was now 3 p.m. on a hot early-summer afternoon we were soon in the Murray River, where we stayed till tea-time. On the sandy beach we met two couples, members of Helios, who also have caravan sites at Bangalee. When they discovered we were New Zealanders we were told to "look out for those long black things with beady eyes". "Stamp as you walk", we were told, "and they'll clear off". Fortunately we saw no live snakes but that evening we were shown a dead one.

In due course we met the Proprietors - Manfred, his wife Brigitte and daughter Petra, and their partner, Frank. All had marvellous suntans and figures fashioned by fresh air and hard work. Manfred, a bricklayer by trade, was spending his days from sunup to sundown building the brick waIls of a new ablution block, to be ready for the ANF Convention at New Year. He worked without hat or shoes and said that began to come alive when the temperature reached 95°F and then he might even have a swim! The existing house, shop and ablution block are testimony to his skill as a bricklayer.

As darkness approached it was necessary to cover up against the mosquitoes. I delayed dressing and paid the price!

A barbeque was arranged for after dark; we were surprised to find about 20 people on the premises. It was Friday evening but not many people were expected for the weekend; Melbourne people usually came once in two weeks and this was an "off" weekend.

I took the opportunity to talk with Manfred. He and Brigitte had come from Germany some years previously. He had begun Bangalee because he believed Australia needed such a place. The property is a large one, with the river curving around it to the North and West. The river banks are well covered with large trees but as yet the camping area is very bare, though trees have been planted. In two years, as well as the buildings already mentioned, a fishing lake has been excavated at the north end and filled with millions of gallons of water. (Manfred is a keen fisherman.) At the southern end a swimming lake was in process of formation - not a concrete pool but a lake with its bottom lined with plastic sheeting covered with sand, the water to run in and out all the time. In that climate it would soon warm up! Manfred was quite happy for me to write something for NZN and said I could take what photos of him that I liked. I was surprised to be told that we were the first New Zealand family to visit Bangalee; one lone girl had been there before us.

Incidentally, I was surprised to read in NZN No. 93 that a lone man had been refused entry, as we were told that anyone was welcome, regardless of passport or other credentials or affiliations.

The night was cool, as was next morning, but it soon warmed up. We had intended to leave early, to keep our schedule, but were reluctant to go. The hospitality was real; we were lent blankets, pillows, can-opener, etc, and what with returning these, having a swim, making farewells and being invited to coffee, it was 11 am. before we tore ourselves away.

The next weekend we were able to meet again some of our new-found friends, who took us to Helios, but that is another story.

Some day, I hope, we shall return to Bangalee and visit some of the other resorts that are springing up along the Murray River and in other parts of Australia.

Meanwhile, the ANF Convention has come and gone, and I don't envy the participants the heat they must have experienced! But to anyone visiting Victoria or N.S.W. in spring or autumn I would say,

Don't miss Bangalee!

TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING

Amelia Fortesque-Smythe

I am female, married with two children and have lots of hobbies. I am also a Nudist. I always say Nudist rather than Naturist because if you tell people you are a Naturist they often think you mean zoo-ologist or botanist and explaining the difference can be a bit awkward, but if you state Nudist in the first place all is clear. You still get lots of sideways glances and silly questions but they get over the shock and the questions get more sensible as they become more aware of what nudism is all about. The silly things they ask can be funny too, "Are you into wife-swapping at that club of yours" asked a male acquaintance (19 years old). I told him I didn't fancy any of the wives so I hadn't considered it. Poor thing was not too sure what to make of that.

My husband is pretty open about this 'hobby' of ours too. "What does your wife think about you going to that place?" a colleague asked him. He looked disbelieving when told "My Wife is a member too" then horrified at the answer to his next query "What do you do with the children while you are there?" Whatever must people imagine we get up to if they think we don't take our children! It really is a pity that people have these strange preconceived ideas about nudism. Many people think we all tear our gear off the minute we get through the gate, regardless.

I told a neighbour we had been to a working bee at the club last winter. Should have anticipated her reply "Wasn't it awfully cold in the nude?" Oh dear, here we go again I thought, as I explained that we only take our clothes off if they are not necessary for decoration or warmth, or (most important of all) if we want to.

I had a phone call last month from the reluctant wife of a husband dead keen to join a nudist club. She needed to talk to someone who might be able to shed some light on what, in her opinion, was an unnatural streak in her husband. "Can you tell me why people want to take their clothes off?" was one of her questions. "Yes," I replied. "If you can tell me why we need clothes on, on a blazing hot day". We finished our conversation after almost an hour with her quite keen to try 'the good life'. I saw her last Sunday in the pool (the only place where clothes are taboo) laughing and splashing with her children.

The trouble with nudists is that you just can't avoid them. I meet a new member in the High Street "Didn't recognise you with your clothes on, ha, ha" he booms unthinkingly, and I am aware of interested stares from all around me. I go into the bank "Hi" says the teller, deftly relieving me of my money "Good Sports Day on Sunday, lovely weather for us". Later in the day my dentist, drilling my molars as if there were no tomorrow, says breezily "Couldn't go up to the club at the weekend, had an emergency", I curse him silently and hate the way dentists can talk to you without you being able to reply. That evening watching television and nursing my face a policeman appears on the news. "I didn't know he was a copper" I mutter through the pain. The ads come on - another nudist grinning at us (how did he get that job???) No, I'm afraid there is no way you can avoid us, even though you may never be aware of us, so, if you are a non-member reading this article - BEWARE - that elderly couple at the end of the street, so quiet and so charming may be nudists!

I hope my sense of humour and openness regarding nudity helps non-nudists to realise that we are just ordinary people who arrived in the world nude and like to be that way when circumstances permit. I enjoy trying to make people laugh when it comes to nudity, after all it is not a deadly serious subject - just the most natural thing in the world.

FREE BEACH PROGRESS UPDATE

John Miller

As the saying goes - "if its old, its new" and that may help to explain why some of you regular readers may have been experiencing a sensation of "Deja Vu" with the recent

publication in the daily press that various Local Councils, Regional Authorities and other ad hoc bodies are going to consider again the question regarding and possible authorization of "Clothing Optional Areas" which is the new euphemism for the old expression "Free Beaches".

In the recent past the F.B.G. has been in correspondence with no less than 17 council, authorities, cities and counties with the suggestion that C.O.A.'s time has come and could they please designate a stretch of coastline officially. This latest surge of enthusiasm was partly generated by the news that Wellington City Council seemed to be on the verge of a major breakthrough in our favour and we did not want the local authorities to feel left out of the scramble to grant C.O.A.'s once the initial step was taken. Alas and alack Wellington City's Councillors voted against the proposal much to the disappointment of many good keen persons.

However by this time our wheels were in motion and who would dare stop them? Replies have been filtering back from most of the bodies we wrote to and not one of them has been in anyway unhelpful. The press, both locally and on a larger scale have been very fair and supportive in their unsolicited reporting of various council meetings so much so that the writer often receives his first news of a particular decision from the morning newspaper. The most commonly used phrase which came to light was "That this Council/Authority/City has no suitable beaches or areas of coastline". The word "unfortunately" was used as a prefix to this statement on several occasions.

The best news has come from the largest authority, the biggest city and most easterly city all of whom have directed their relevant subcommittees to look further into the legal considerations and the social implications of declaring Clothing Optional Areas. So even if you have heard it all before, this time you may be hearing it a little clearer - we do seem to be getting just a little piece of Utopia known as a legal Free Beach.

Please stand by for further developments.

  AFTER THE RAIN

Peter Rebers

After enjoying a cosy, but wet and muddy Wellington Rally, we were looking forward to some guaranteed Nelson sunshine as we were packing our tents and gear in the rain.

Fortunately the Cook Strait ferries were sailing again after being held up by a storm and most of us were excited at the prospect of a good, rough crossing. There were however, a few people who made sure that sea sickness pills were included in their carry baggage.

The crossing lived up to our expectations and we all made the most of the wild motions of the ship. When we disembarked, we were fortunate enough to bump into a friend with an empty V.W. Combi trying to get a booking back to the North Island. It didn't take much to persuade Grant to go with us to Mapua, which in turn helped out those amongst us who didn't have transport.

The rest of us had bikes and we chose the windy coast road. Conrad and Dazzer conclusively proved that trail bikes can easily keep up with road bikes, and the fact that they stayed ahead of us roadies, is a credit to their amazing bike handling.

We arrived at Mapua about midnight and were greeted by Christchurch N.Y.C. who were enjoying the hospitality of the camp hosts in the reception house. There was of course the usual hugging, kissing and climbing over each other.

It was great to be able to step out of the tent in the morning into good dry sand and a beautiful day, instead of pouring rain and mud squelching up between our toes. Most of us didn't have mattresses but found the sand easy to sleep on.

Most of the first day was spent lazing around and catching a few long awaited rays. We checked the camp out and were very impressed with the relaxed atmosphere.

At this point I should explain for those who have not heard of Mapua, that it is a small place a few kilometres west of Nelson. A few nudist-business persons have acquired a camping ground on a beach frontage with dress optional in mind and have called it Mapua Leisure Park. It is efficiently run and all camping facilities are provided. I came across many club members there and gained the impression that people are finding the Leisure Park an attractive alternative to attending the Rally. (Especially as the weather is almost guaranteed.)

Well as transport was limited for most of us, we made full use of the facilities offered. We whiled away the hours, fishing, canoeing, swimming, playing, volley ball, tennis, billiards, water skiing, trampolining and for the addicts, there was even a television in the cookhouse.

A few of us did have some unwanted excitement when we went into Nelson and for some reason Conrad was singled out for some attention from a carload of local gang members. Things got a bit warm and we had to split up each of us finding our own way back. Conrad showed up a few hours later with a protective Police escort to make sure he got back safely. It turned out that he had been chased by heavies and only managed to elude them when he rode "up" a flight of stairs on his bike.

We had a memorable barbeque one evening when all of us went to the mouth of the estuary at low tide and collected bags of pipis. These were cooked on a hot plate and were found to be a gourmet's delight when served between two slices of bread with lashings of tomato sauce.

Almost every other evening was spent dancing and socializing with the rest of the people at the park. The energy released on these resulted in a good nights sleep.

N.Y.C. would like to thank Pat and his associates for the opportunity of holding a memorable rally at their park. We would especially like to thank you for being so tolerant with us.

It was good to see Martin and Nicki again, having come from Sydney especially for the Youth Rally.

MARIJUANA (CANNIBIS)

This article is published as an educational feature - the facts have been checked out with official authorities. The article itself comes from:

Geelong Drug Information Centre
59 Sydney Parade
Geelong 3220.
Australia.

Marijuana consists of the leaves, flowers and stems of the male and female plant known as Cannabis sativa. Hashish is a resinous material obtained from the flowering tops of the female plant. The latter is by far the most potent cannabis preparation.

This plant is indigenous to Central Asia and now may be found in most parts of the world. It is a hardy plant flourishing under widely varying climatic conditions, although optimum growth requires a hot dry climate.

The potency of marijuana varies with the geographical location in which the plant grows, time of harvest and the plants part used.

In 1965, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was identified and synthesised and it is currently believed that this is the main active principle of cannabis.

Marijuana may be smoked, sniffed or ingested, but effects are experienced most quickly with smoking. When smoked, absorption is rapid and effects are usually evident within 10 to 20 minutes. When ingested, absorption is much slower and effects are not apparent until up to one hour after the drug has been taken. The effects usually last 2 to 4 hours and there is no hangover.

Effects of acute intoxication with Cannabis

Physiological effects

• increased heart rate

• drying of throat and mouth

• reddening of eyes

• stimulation of appetite

• increased urination

• less commonly, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation are reported.

Psychological effects

The psychological effects of cannabis depend to a considerable degree on the personality of the user, his past experience with cannabis or other drugs, his attitudes and the setting in which the drug is used. The dose, type of preparation and rate and mode of administration can greatly influence the response.

Subjective effects reported are

• alteration of perception of time and space

• feelings of well being, relaxation, euphoria

• lessening of inhibitions

• impaired immediate memory

• altered sense of identity

• exaggerated laughter

• enhanced interpersonal communication

• less pleasant experiences include fear and anxiety and depression, irritability, confusion and lethargy.

Overview of Effects

1) Lethal dose

No deaths due directly to smoking or eating of cannabis have been documented and no reliable information exists regarding the lethal dose in humans.

2)Cannabis smoking and respiratory disease

Cannabis smoke has been reported to contain carcinogenic substances of which the concentration in a marijuana cigarette is less than half that of a tobacco cigarette. Although the frequency of smoking by marijuana users is much lower, it might be predicted that marijuana smoking could produce cancer though the incidence would be lower than that associated with cigarette smoking. The deep inhalation technique usually used with cannabis might cause other respiratory complications.

3) Marijuana and foetal deformities

There is no evidence to show with certainty that cannabis adversely affects human chromosomes or causes deformed children. However, the taking of any drug unnecessarily during pregnancy must be viewed as most unwise.

Psychiatric Disorders

Disorientation, delusions, suspiciousness and paranoia, and in some cases, panic, loss of control and acute psychotic states have been reported amongst cannabis users. However these cases seem to be relatively rare and generally show a rapid recovery.

The few cases of prolonged psychoses which have been reported have usually been attributed to an earlier personality predisposition and/or an unfavourable environmental setting.

There has been a long-standing belief of an association of cannabis and the psychotic reaction in India and other Eastern countries. Heavy users in these countries have been observed to show marked inactivity, apathy and self-neglect. However, the methodology of these studies has been questioned and it seems that much larger amounts of the drug are used and cannabis is often mixed with other psychoactive substances. In addition, there are many social and economical factors which complicate cross-culture comparisons.

Flash-back effects

These are the recurrence of the intoxicating effects of the drug while in a drug-free state. These have been reported but appear to be quite rare.

"Amotivational" syndrome

Frequent heavy marijuana use has been associated with a loss of interest in conventional goals and the development of a lethargic state. However, it has yet to be proved that cannabis causes these personality changes. It is quite likely that individuals who hold certain attitudes to the traditional established patterns of behaviour and belief are attracted to cannabis.

THC accumulated in body fats

Recent research suggests that THC, a fat-soluble substance, is stored in the body. It is quite feasible then to suppose that with repeated exposure to the drug, and with a rate of intake which exceeds the rate of excretion, there should be a build-up of the levels of stored THC in the tissues. Whether this stored drug is biologically active is not known at present. If it is, a correlation between this phenomenon and certain aspects of the previously described "amotivational" syndrome should be seriously considered.

Effect of cannabis on driving skills

There is considerable evidence that acute intoxication with cannabis impairs performance on perceptual, cognitive and psychomotor tasks. The effects of cannabis on psychomotor skills depends upon dose, the subject's past history of use and the nature of the sensory, cognitive and muscular components involved. It has been shown that cannabis can affect attention and judgement, and if the dose is sufficiently large, can produce considerable perceptual distortion. In all, it would seem likely that under certain conditions, cannabis might have adverse effects on driving and that any such effects would vary as a function of dose and a variety of other factors.

Cannabis and crime

Few crimes committed under the influence of marijuana have been documented, and a causal relationship between the use of cannabis and other illegal behaviour has not been established. It could be said, however, that an individual who commits one illegal act (e.g. the use of a drug) may be more likely to break other laws.

Cannabis and other drugs

Of major interest is the possibility of a progression from marijuana to the use of other stronger drugs. There is no evidence of a causal connection but it may be that through the use of marijuana the association with social groups and sub-cultures involved with more dangerous drugs is facilitated.

Dependence

Physical dependence to cannabis has not been demonstrated and a withdrawal syndrome is not known to occur.

Psychological dependence on cannabis does occur, especially in those with personality disorders or social or intellectual maladjustment.

WARNING! NUDES CAUSE DROUGHT

Beau Brummell

In 1979 South Africa suffered a serious drought, the worst in twenty years.

The Beau Valley Nudist Club is set in the heart of the Transvaal bushvelt and for some unknown reason, the drought was worse here than it was in other areas.

Rivers and dams were drying up, water restrictions were heavily imposed on the entire population, sheep and cattle were dying of thirst and the African sun kept beating mercilessly down.

Of course for us Nudists the never ending sunshine was just too fabulous, not even one cloud in the sky to cast a shadow and upset that all over tan!

Then out of the blue I got a phone call from the Naboomspruit "Moral Action Committee" who informed me that it was us Nudists who have caused the drought! They said our nudity was sinful in the eyes of God and it is His "wrath" that has been brought upon us.

They quoted "Chronicles II Chapter 7" 'If you will humble yourselves and turn from sin and seek my face, then I will hear from Heaven and I will heal the land.'

I was flabbergasted!! I told him he was nuts! and said: If God wished us to live on earth without clothes, He would have made sure that we were all born naked!

This happened on a Monday and they said that if it didn't rain by Saturday, they would move in with bulldozers and smash down this den of iniquity!!

Just to prove how wrong they were, I said O.K. I'll ask all our members to wear costumes and be 'textiles' for a weekend to see if it made any difference to the weather I also said I would be waiting at the gate with my elephant hunting rifle in case the bulldozers arrived. I was ready for a fight.

So the whole of Saturday our 300 members walked around at Beau Valley wearing costumes, and of course they all kept watching the skies for rain clouds.

By 11 o'clock in the morning, massive black clouds were building up on the horizon. The members felt a bit uneasy. By lunchtime the heavens had opened up and 2½ inches of rain fell at Beau Valley that afternoon. Would you believe it?

This is a true story. We will never know who is right and who is wrong, but our nudist club is flourishing. This year we have had no 'textiles' and the rains have been excellent. In fact several areas have had floods and I thought the "Moralists" might blame these on us as well!

The Gods are with us!

LAS PALMERAS A PARADISE

Robbert Broekstra

The camp is about 90km north-east of Almeria (Andalucia) and about 2km from the village of Garrucha. It takes approximately two hours to travel by bus from Almeria to Garrucha.

Getting close to the camp one will see a big sign along the road announcing "Las Palmeras". If you press the button, the bus will stop immediately. Of course one could take a taxi which are cheap in Spain.

A cordial welcome awaits you and your hosts Jochen and Hilda Gerlach make you feel at home.

In our case we had been travelling over eight hours and we hit the sack quite soon after arrival.

We woke at 8.30 next morning to a clear blue sky and a rising sun. For those who do not have a tent or caravan, there are furnished apartments, fully equipped, living room with attached kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

In summertime the temperature normally varies from 28°C to 32°C. Winter varies from 10°C to 20°C in the afternoon.

The camp has facilities for 450 caravans and tents. It also has two swimming pools, one covered and heated, 27°C in winter, the other king sized for summer. Groceries can be purchased at the camp store and for those who do not wish to prepare a meal there is a cosy restaurant with adjoining bar.

Most of the visitors during winter are Germans, Dutch and English. I saw one Spanish male who had come on a days visit.

To the Spanish, naturism is very new and it will take a while for the people to get used to the idea. However, a French naturist, who is a teacher in Huelva (Spain) has written a book on naturism, which will be available at bookshops in due time, to help the Spanish people to understand what naturism is about.

Whether it is summer or winter it will be a real treat staying at "Las Palmeras" in winter you may need an extra blanket, just ask your hosts and they will do their utmost to help you. You will never regret your visit to "Las Palmeras" whichever month you pick.

OPENING DAY - A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB SITE

The negotiations to get our own Club site has taken so long and been fought so hard that when we were finally successful in getting a site, we felt we deserved a celebration. So we had one, on World Nudist Day, 10 February 1980, when our new land was officially opened.

The "usual" sort of opening by politicians didn't seem right for our Club, so we asked Maureen Worsley to do the honours. Maureen had done a lot of work as Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1976 to have Kambah Beach legally gazetted, so we as a Club have quite a lot to thank her for.

About 150 of our members turned up on the day, as did the TV and newspaper people, the M.P. for Canberra and a representative of the House of Assembly. At the appointed time, our President was just launching into a long boring speech when up galloped Maureen on horseback, "dressed" as Lady Godiva, and cut the opening ribbon with a bush knife!

After the opening a free barbecue lunch and drinks were provided for all, followed by relaxation time. There were guided tours of the land for those that hadn't seen it before, horse rides for the kids (including some big kids) and we even had a game of volley ball. Others went for walks, looked for kangaroos (we had seen several early that morning), climbed trees, fished for yabbies in the dam or sat in the sun and chatted. A local radio station played "The Teddy Bares Picnic" for us over the radio, and later in the week "Running Bare".

Pauline had made a beautiful cake, a book depicting our land saga. We ate it for afternoon tea - it tasted good too!

In her opening speech, Maureen had commented that the A.C.T. Nudist Club is a friendly, supportive group of caring people. Now that we are embarking on more materialistic aspects of club life, and spend hours poring over plans and arguing over development, we must make sure that Maureen's words remain true. I have every confidence that they will.

REFLECTIONS ON NEW ZEALAND SUN

This article has been six years in the making. Thoughts of it began when we first visited New Zealand and discovered sun clubs, "pockets of sanity" were havens for us then, and have continued to be during this visit, six years later.

Our immediate positive reaction to the New Zealand clubs was to their name: SUN CLUBS - it sounded much more "on the beam" than the Nudist Clubs of America. And now that we know so many of them and have lived with them and with their people, we must say that they live up to that name. Generally speaking, members of Sun Clubs are more serious sun bathers and sun lovers, and are rewarded for this with more golden colour than most members of clubs in the States.

That's the SUN part of the name. The CLUB part is also much more emphasised here. Sun Club people are a family of many families, who have become friends as well, because they agree in their hearts and in their minds and bodies to expose what they really look like to the sun and to each other. They are brave enough to rise above the "norm" on this high issue, and make that stand together, and the resulting bond is clearly seen in any of the clubs. The "family" feeling was very much felt by us. Again, in most clubs in the States, the feeling is one of "business" rather than "family", which is a very different feeling indeed.

So, your Sun Clubs do live up to their name. We believe they are evolutionary places, because a reality takes place in them every day, that does not exist in the "outside world", a reality that the world has yet to evolve to. And that someday they will be places where other evolutionary realities are shared as well. That movement is already underway in America. We know of several clubs in which the concept of nudism is being extended to one of total health. In this way, these particular clubs are forerunning a new concept in Nudist Clubs. They are places in which, not only are bodies naked, but people are very much into improving the health and look of them. They are vegetarian in diet, which slims them up quite a lot. They are also involved with exercise, a little yoga, the learning of herbal preventive medicines and higher ways of thinking. I was amazed, myself, at the results. It's members are naked and healthy, and that is apparent in all of their faces and bodies.

A word about the vegetarian part: Vegetarianism is a parallel to nudism, in that it is something we naturally know in our hearts is right, because it feels better, looks better, and adds years and much pleasure to our lives. It is something, too, that we have to rise above the "norm" to reach, and we are rewarded for it with better health on every level of our being.

And New Zealand Sun Clubs are places where this evolutionary change could occur, because its members are friends, who have already forged a new path, and experience what rising above the crowd for something that feels right does for a human being.

Our lasting reaction to the New Zealand clubs is with those people we have met, who have nestled into a corner of our hearts, so that we can take a part of them home with us. We would like to thank all of you who were a part of the warm welcome we received at your clubs. They were homes in a strange land for us; places where we could stop and stay, take a look at ourselves and each other, and soak up some of your delicious New Zealand sunshine. They were indeed "pockets of sanity", and we are grateful that you exist. Our dearest friends in New Zealand are those we have met through the sun clubs.

I want to especially mention Ken and Mary at Auckland Outdoor Health Club, whose friendship saved us untold hassle, and brought us touches of home here and there. A special thanks to Don and Faith of the same club for being real good neighbours, and to Paula, Melissa and Adrian, who were simply a joy to hang around with. At the Taranaki Naturist Club, there were Dennis and Netta, whose feelings of warm welcome lifted us up above the chilliness of the Mount Egmont air. And at our South Island home-away-from-home in Nelson, there were Hub and Trudy, our gracious host and hostess, and Bill, June, Don and Daphne, with whom we shared many an evening in front of the cozy fireplace. At the Auckland Sun Club, we want to mention Beryl and Ernest, for their kindness, and last but certainly not least, at the same club, our helpful friend Ron Rencher, a man who stands up for friendship. We appreciate that. And to all we haven't room to mention, our heartfelt thanks for your hospitality.

In saying goodbye, we wish for you, lives full of love and health and kindness and sunshine. Perhaps we shall, once again, stand naked together, under a bright sun, some future summer's day.

TRIP TO MAYOR ISLAND

BAY OF PLENTY FREE BEACH GROUP

Jenny.

Seven a.m. on Tauranga Wharf. Various fishing boats being loaded with bodies and their gear. No sign of FBGs. Jenny to harbour bod: "Which boat for the sunbathers?" "Well, I dunno. Think I'd better take you." FBGs arrive. Gear all piled on trolley. Bod says to go through the passageway to the boat. Passageway too narrow for trolley. Sorry - have to unload and carry gear. Eventually all gear stashed in hold. Sorry - wrong boat. It's the one by the pontoon. Unload, carry gear over to pontoon. Can't all go on this boat. Some of you go to the next pontoon. Up with the gear. Over to next pontoon. Sky still overcast, fortunately. Drop gear on second pontoon by third boat which seems to be about a 14 footer, very smart deep sea fishing, neat and trim and wee.

At Mount Maunganui we picked up Peter and Pam, of Auckland, who had been told by Tauranga at 6 a.m. that the trip had been cancelled. A tired Sandra puffed and parted from her basket load of subs which was on the other boat - the big slow one.

Lovely fast trip - sun straining through the clouds. George the only one game enough to strip off. Sandra showed us her lovely snowy boobs and bum but covered up again, fast.

For those who don't know it, Mayor Island is as God left it. Totally unspoiled by so much as a tiny jetty for unloading gear. A slithery 12" plank supported a human chain. Old slow boat finally arrived and it was mid-day before the mountain of gear on the beach was removed to our assigned living space. Marquee up and sleeping bags arranged like sardines, billy boiled for tea.

Perfect afternoon on West Bay, which is less populated than camping beach. Enthusiastic plans for a 5 a.m. beginning tomorrow to Crater Lookout, and why go back to Tauranga on Sunday as originally planned. Why not make it the whole weekend?

Noise of revelry from club (pub) increased progressively from 10 p.m. but it was the snoring in her ear hole which drove Jenny out into the night with her sleeping bag and squab. It was marvellous lying on the beach gazing at the stars. More room and more air. Who wants a tent? Things plopped down out of the trees and down her neck now and then, and not too many mosquitoes. But it was the revellers rolling home around 2 am, and tripping over her in the dark which sent Jenny off again looking for a quiet spot to get some sleep. Over by the headquarters building looked fairly private. In the dark you couldn't see how the ground sloped downward. After about 10 minutes she crawled wearily back up from the bottom of the sleeping bag. Where now, silly old cow! Over in front of the marquee was flat - had to be. Settled again when the first patter of tiny feet went by. Then the steady stream of females making for the loo to jettison the night's beer. The last of the yodeling between the cabins and the boats was somewhere around 4.15 a.m. Beautiful dawn. At quarter to six Sandra leaped out of the marquee just as though she had been sleeping all night. Jenny, who had initiated the extra night idea, was swearing she would not spend another night on the island.

Gary, John and Jenny left without breakfast for the well-worthwhile climb to Crater Lookout. Sweet bird music all the way from above and non-stop scout lore from 12-year-old Gary down here. Overcast sky - perfect for walking under. Gary and John turned back at Crater Lookout. Jenny went on alone for complete island trek. Grateful for tin discs on trees marking the route because the track tended to disappear at times. Lovely views of sea and lakes in between long periods of scrambling up and down in dim, cool bush. Spent one unpleasant half hour bush walking up and down banks looking for the track or tin discs which just petered out. Lay down to rest, try to sleep. No sleep last night, no breakfast, only raisins in her pocket which she was afraid to eat in case they made thirst. Visions of headlines: "Old woman lost in bush - alone, no food, no water, no clothing." Serve her bloody well right! Track was suddenly there, broad as Queen Street, but which direction? Had she been going round in circles and now headed back? Lie down again, relax and see which way the sun was moving. You're just old and tired and hungry and thirsty and stupid. A young God was there, suddenly, scratching his head, looking at the trees, perplexed also. See! Even the young do it. Get lost, I mean. Dogged his footsteps all the way home and kept up with him, too.

While swilling gallons of sooty black tea back in the cookhouse resolved never go in the bush without clothes, food, water - and a youngster. And decided to stay the extra night after all.

Again a perfect afternoon at West Bay, with an audience of yachties gawping at the naked bodies. Good night's sleep in spite of the merrymaking till all hours.

Midnight swim and Leed with George and Adele and little Geoffrey. Morning - no sign of stiffness after the seven-hour trek, so again to Crater Lookout with Sandra, George and Brian. Then lovely skinny swim off the rocks by camping beach to give the campers something to remember us by.

Perfect trip back. Everybody stripped. And the highlight.

Linton persuaded the skipper to stop out in mid-ocean and we all dived into blue, blue depths. It was a really thrilling end to a perfect long weekend.

THE 29th RALLY IS ON!

Taranaki Naturist Club Incorporated is sponsoring this year's Rally, to be held at Lowgarth near Eltham and Stratford.

This will be a Tolaga Bay style convention and Rally facilities include: indoor sports courts; swimming pool; a sealed miniten court; volleyball; tenniquoits; bowls; table tennis and all the other usual Rally sports.

There will be feature films for entertainment at night; disco; wine and cheese; concert; all with a French flavour.

Taranaki Herald: 29.3.80.

Naturists plan national rally

More than 300 naturists are expected to attend a national four-day rally in Taranaki at the end of the year.

It will be the first time the New Zealand Nudists; Federation has had a national rally in the province.

The Federation has applied to the Eltham County Council to use a farm and disused dairy factory on Hastings Rd, west of Eltham, as the venue from December 28 to January 2.

County clerk Mr P.D. Bates said the council had raised no objections to the rally, provided health requirements such as acceptable sanitary facilities were complied with.

A health inspector would work with a Taranaki Naturists Club member to see the correct facilities were on the site by the time the rally started.

Federation vice- president and Taranaki club president Mr Peter James, New Plymouth, said the main activities at the rally would be sports, such as swimming and bowls.

The club had still not officially heard from the County. It had also applied to the Federation to host the rally and was waiting word back.

Representatives from 25 New Zealand naturist clubs were expected to attend, including 72 adults, plus their children from Taranaki.

Mr James said only those in clubs could attend.

Trophies would be awarded in the sporting events.

Taranaki Daily News: 31.3.80.

Naturists'
rally

A Hastings Rd, Eltham, farm is to be the scene of a rally by the Taranaki Naturists Club next summer.

Approximately 300 nudists are expected to attend the rally on Mr C. Wuest's property, based around the old Lowgarth dairy factory which is on the farm.

The club had applied to the Eltham County Council for permission to hold the rally from December 28 to January 2, 1981.

The county clerk, Mr PD. Bates, said the council saw no reason why permission could not be granted for the rally.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Dear Mike,

'There is no new thing under the sun', as the bible says.

Having been sent to represent the INF at the NZNF Rally and the ANF Convention, I was to find how true that was, and that the difficulties and the aims of nudists down under are no different form those of which I had already had experience of in Europe.

The same questions are being asked everywhere. How can we get more money? How can we get more public acceptance, and, in particular, acceptance by the lawgivers? Do we need a 'Supporter Section'? If we campaign for free beaches, are we going to cut the throats of our clubs?

True, there are changes in emphasis, which relate to national characteristics. Few European clubs are as fanatically committed to sport as some Australian clubs seem to be (or did I only meet the addicts whilst the layabouts stayed at home?) I found a refreshing absence of pseudo-psychologists, attempting to rationalise the human delight in nudity relating it to a flight from civilisation or linking it with a reform of one's diet or even one's politics. In both New Zealand and Australia I found people frankly and openly enjoying life, and enjoying it to the full. To quote the Bible again, 'A man hath no better thing under the sun than to eat and to drink and to be merry.' Both at Wellington and at Bangalee they were certainly doing that. Long may they continue.

Alan McCombe

Dear Editor,

It was brought home quite forcibly to me recently how far nudism has come in the past decade. I was looking through a copy of a Penthouse magazine (being careful to avoid the naughty bits of course) when I came across a letter from the President of the Central Council for British Naturism. Some of his comments really rocked me, for instance "The public are far from ready to accept nudity" and even worse "In no circumstances whatever will most naturists discuss their 'activities' with anyone outside the club". I was appalled. surely this letter must be a put up job. I read on to find "In many cases the children are forbidden by their parents to tell anyone where they spent the weekend" Incredible' I turned back to check the date - 1972. That explained a lot. How different things are today, my own family have always talked quite freely about their activities (and what naughty things that word 'activities' can con jour up). My daughter, at Intermediate school, discusses her weekend quite freely, several of her friends having visited the club with us on various occasions. And how could I forbid my 4 year old to talk about it at Kindy without making him feel that there must be something very wrong in what we do. All our friends know, all our neighbours know and all our children's friends know that we belong to a nudist club and none of them give a hoot one way or the other.

I know there are still many people who do keep their nudist identity a secret (sometimes with good reason) and I feel quite sorry about it. Nudity, especially as practised in home or club environment is a normal, healthy and very natural way to be, so why be so secretive? The more open we nudists can be, the more we will find ourselves accepted. As can be seen from the difference in attitudes between 1972 and 1980 times certainly are changing so lets be proud to stand up and be counted.

Irene C. Nicholson.

P.S. Who was it that said 'If God had intended us to be nude we would have been born nude.'

Dear friends,

I am pleased to hear that World Naturist Day in the Southern Hemisphere has changed.

I was at the last N.E. Congress but not as an official delegate when this was discussed. All were proposing August, and when our delegate did not react, I got up, the Council knew me, and I asked to speak.

I said then, that it was rather difficult for us being mid-winter here! Nobody had thought about this, and they started to laugh and clap. I could do no more and left it to the delegate, he proposed February in thy feeling still not right. Of course I could not interfere.

L. J. H. Loverendale

Dear Mike,

Thanks very much for a better magazine each time and such lively articles - it's excellent.

I would like to see more photos of the rally activities and general illustrations of the grounds and people. Also some indoor activities such as concert and the Wellington tenikoit finals.

Keep up your absolutely terrific quality mag!

Henry Burgess

Dear Mike,

To tell or not to tell - that is the question. Did you hear the story of the couple, who had been members of nudist clubs for some years, but had never got round to telling their parents. It appears that the husbands parents were staying with them for a while, which of course became a bit inhibiting. They finally attended a swim night, when asked where they had been, husband decided to tell Wife was in the kitchen, waiting, with baited breath, for the reaction. Quite staggered at the parents calm reaction and comment that they had been members of a nudist club before he was born, the husband became upset that his parents had never told him.

Reluctance to tell is usually due to the fear of an adverse reaction. Experiences of those who have not made a secret of their nudist club involvement has been of reactions of interest, curiosity and of "what you do is your own business". The most difficult question to answer being "What's the big secret? or Why have you kept it a secret for so many years?" The most difficult impression to overcome being the one of implied lack of faith in the persons relationship.

It is noticeable that an increasing number of club members are friends and or relatives of older members, how many more potential members there must be. A common comment from people experiencing nudism later in their life is 'Why didn't we know of this earlier."

It is a fact that one person never knows what another person really thinks - perhaps the 'fear' of telling is in reality a projection of personal uncertainty, prejudices and mental attitudes.

Dear friends,

The photo on page fourteen of Issue 94 in my opinion has captured a very soulful mood.

The photographer, Ian Daily, can be congratulated for portraying feeling and emotion in one simple shot.

Let us have more of this style.

Keith Tilden

Dear Sir,

Last December a schoolteacher and his wife took a nude walk down Queen Street at 1 2.30 p.m.

His plea in court was one of not guilty to a charge of wilful and obscene exposure. Part of his statement was that it was only people's dirty minds that saw nudity as obscene.

Mr P.M. Browne, SM, before whom they appeared on this charge reserved his decision. The case was fully reported in the NZ Herald of 6 February 1979.

On 9 February the Herald then reported Mr Browne's ruling. The nude walk was "Offensive" he decided.

It was, he ruled, unacceptable to contemporary community standards.

The man was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months and his wife was discharged without conviction.

The magistrates attitude is well worth noting here. Mr Browne said he was concerned that the accused should not offend again and to discharge him without conviction would be to provide him with an opportunity to test community standards once more. With a conviction, his action could be referred to should he do the same thing a second time.

These comments and the magistrates decision show a remarkable and commendable tolerance and while we as nudists cannot necessarily condone nude walks in Queen Street on a busy day during the lunch break it is nevertheless refreshing to read of a couple who had the nerve to do so. It is even more refreshing to see the nude perambulators treated so lightly. Community standards are certainly taking a turn for the better. While Queen Street is still out of bounds to nudists in club uniform this must surely be one step closer to a free beach where nudity is far more logical and justifiable.

John H. Gilmour

Dear Mike,

We thoroughly enjoyed reading Issue 94 especially the poem "Ia femme - Ia naturiste". The poem and photograph accompanying it complement each other very well.

One complaint is that you do not always credit who wrote what. Is there a reason for this? Can we be told who wrote the poem? But on the opposite track we think that the magazine is getting better with each issue, and with the inclusion of cultural type of features, like poetry will become even better.

Keep up the terrific work.

Ian & Wendi
Inverell, N.S.W.

Thanks for the words of praise. In answer to your complaint - some articles do not lend themselves to having an authors credit, others do not wish their names to gu with their submitted article. The poem was submitted by Mark and Di. Horgan. We will try to bring cultural and educational features to readers as they come to hand.

Mike.

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank you and your staff for presenting to us a wonderful and beautiful magazine.

In a world that is so wrapped up in its destruction it is very refreshing to be able to read of pleasant happenings, friendly gatherings and the like and at the same time be treated to appealing photographs.

This is a complete reversal to what one sees in the daily papers or on television.

Please continue your magnificent work and keep a little sanity in the world.

I advocate that we forget the head in the sand attitude and start an intensive programme to educate the masses. For ours is the only society in which everyone is equal. Everyone is equal when nude. Nudity makes everyone equal.

If the public at large could only realise how much better off they would be within our concept of a free society, then the quicker this planet would be a much more pleasant place to reside.

Shalom.

Dear Mike,

Replying to a letter that appeared in NZ Naturist No. 94 from A. Fodor regarding 15 acres of land at Maslin's Beach, I wish to correct some accusations made by A. Fodor regarding the "lax and or coupled with secrecy" of the Australian Nudist Federation.

At the time the ANF was notified I was Secretary and received Mr Fodor's letter date 6 Sept. 1979 after he first contacted the Naturist. What appeared in his letter was a full description of the land on offer and the price being asked was $39,500.

I wrote to Mr Fodor and informed him the ANF did not have the sort of capital being asked but told him I would circulate the information to all clubs and asked they contact the vendor for further details.

This information appeared in the ANF Bulletin following.

In Mr Fodor's letter he referred me to Robyn Croydon, Solicitors of Adelaide who had further particulars. I wrote to them seeking more detail and was amazed to receive a reply which denied any knowledge of what I was enquiring about - strange I thought.

No further was I to enquire into the matter.

It is also interesting to report to you that my letter to Mr Fodor was neither acknowledged or followed up by him.

Rather than the nudist's of Australia being "lax and or coupled with secrecy" I think they are a lot wiser than Mr Fodor would have us believe.

One cannot be excused for feeling suspicious in these matters when all avenues of enquiry lead to dead-ends as happened to me in this case.

Wishing all at N.Z. Naturist a happy and prosperous 1980.

Dear Sir,

We have just returned from a wonderful ten day holiday in New Zealand.

Thanks to Robin Hoare and various members of the Free Beach Group we managed to combine seeing something of the North Island with soaking up the sun on beaches en route.

We would like to follow the progress of the movement in N.Z. by subscribing to the New Zealand Naturist.

The New Zealand Naturist seems to be one of the best naturist magazines available at the moment, but as a foreign reader may I make one or two suggestions for added interest.

1. Many of the photographs depict interesting beaches, but without a caption giving the name of the location it is virtually impossible to visit the same Spot.

2. More beach detail photographs like the one shown on page 33, No. 92 would provide added interest to those of us not familiar with the N.Z. countryside.

Wishing you every success with your publication.

Dear Sir,

You printed my letter to you in Issue number 93 and in the same issue you printed a letter from a Mr Tom Leaf on the need for a Women's Representative. I asked in my letter for someone to explain how nudist people could allow their children to go away camping when they know the children will see one another nude and have no parents around.

In the following issue I hoped to see a reply to my question as I thought it was important to people contemplating taking up nudism.

According to the front of your magazine you have a Women's Representative, can't you as Editor ask her to give an official reply as spokesperson for the New Zealand Nudist Federation, after all, that's her job isn't it?

I read my first nudist magazine at a friends house, I bought the March Issue locally, I felt a bit embarrassed when I asked for it, in the hope of seeing a reply but there was nothing.

I will buy the June Issue but if there is no reply, I won't bother again because it will mean that nudism is not as open and honest and as healthy as you try to make out, otherwise you would be able to answer such a question as mine without embarrassment.

Perhaps you don't have an answer and everything is improper.

Dear Sir,

At the last A.N.F. Convention meeting held at Bangalee it was decided to set up the Southern Pacific Association of Nudists (SPAN). It will cover Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Singapore, Hong Kong and other countries in our region.

This idea of amalgamating nudists in this part of the world sounds great stuff until one sees the effect of the recommendation put to the same meeting by the A.N.F. Executive that the affiliated club fee structure be changed from $50 per club to 50 cents per member.

It must be obvious to anyone interested in keeping Australian nudists together within the national federation, that under this new system larger clubs are faced with a bill double, treble or even more, with no increase in votes or services would lose interest and withdraw.

So while the A.N.F. executive are worrying about the nudists in the South Pacific their own organisation is crumbling around them I They are not only losing the extra money they hoped to gain, but more importantly, many clubs and hundreds of nudists are lost.

The clubs remaining in the A.N.F. must do something drastic to stop the rot from spreading and forget about all these grand ideas and money making schemes so that ALL clubs can get together at Christmas time and compete in the sports and sit around the table and discuss items that will benefit everyone.

Concerned Australian

Dear Mike,

Re: Mapua Leisure Park Ltd.

Referring to pages 26 and 27 of your June 1979 issue we have just spent 10 glorious days there over Christmas and New Year. The various facilities as advertised tell only parts of the story. They give little indication of the movement by the owners. Two names not mentioned in your issue are Shirley and Murray friends of the owners. In their natural roles of PRO's they could not have made us more welcome. Perhaps this was due to their having found their Paradise, any wonder they never stopped smiling. In a word, Paradise is what the park is and we will be back there next year, that's for sure.

BARENESS AWARENESS

Consider the day we were born

Free as could be, no clothes to be worn!

But "morality" came along,

And so nudity became all wrong.

Yet many have become aware,

That it's okay to run around bare.

The idea has quickly spread,

As more and more clothes are being shed. Hopefully others won't be shy

And at least stop to give it a try...

For once they frolic in the buff,

They'll find they can never get enough!

NATIONAL NUDIST RESORT

(Hot Springs Purchasing Trust)

In the last 6 months we have signed the purchase to buy 21.5 acres of thermal country on the shore of Lake Ohakuri in the central North Island. It is to be set up as a clothing optional nudist resort operation under the name "Geyserland Leisure Park".

The property is bush clad and gently rises from the shores of a forty mile long hydro lake well populated with large trout. We are adjacent to the established tourist resort attraction of Orakei Korako with it's geysers, mud pools, silica terraces and other thermal wonders. Our property also has thermal potential and we hope to develop it in the form of hot pools, spa pools and sauna facilities. Full camping facilities will be provided and all sports popular in the nudist movement will be catered for.

At the end of March the Rotorua District Council gave planning consent to our proposals subject to our abiding by planning procedures and normal regulations. The Council views with favour our proposals and considers this will enhance the natural beauty of the area.

The purchase of the property is at the stage of ratification by the Land Transfer Office. We have to establish to their satisfaction that the land cannot be used for farming and in addition we have to receive an acknowledgement that it can be subdivided from a larger lot. As soon as the title has been transferred, surveying and construction of the road will commence. At this point development of the property can begin.

By the support of nudist club members and supporters we are over the major hurdle of finding funds to purchase the property. However, with extensive development about to commence in the near future further finance is required to sustain the momentum of the development. Any restriction in the availability of capital is likely to limit the facilities that will be available to you and other nudists throughout New Zealand until the property can be brought up to council requirements.

Join in the hundreds who have already invested in this innovative development in the nudist and leisure world by filling in one of the accompanying forms.

NEW ZEALAND CLUB NEWS

SOUTH AUCKLAND NUDIST CLUB

Well this is the last PRO. report before our A.G.M. I would like to say farewell to last year's committee. They have done well considering the major disasters we struck last year. Thanks everyone, you have done well. May I offer a warm welcome to the new committee. I hope things run smoother for you all.

The pool is now finished and we were able to enjoy an occasional swim due to our poor summer. We are very fortunate to have this done because our members were very generous with their donations and help. With the pool finished we hope to welcome more future new members. Our grounds are looking good and we have maintained them well. We are slowly getting grounds into a better area for all the family. I am sure with the new committee they will improve them immensely. With the new pool and barbeque we will be able to have a terrific summer next year, providing of course the sun is agreeable.

We offer a beautiful setting which is quiet and peaceful, something that is hard to find in this day and age. If ever you are in the area please accept our warm welcome and come and look around. Just write to our Secretary and let us know what day and we will arrange for someone to take you there.

ROTORUA SUN CLUB INC.

Greetings from Rotorua. Time seems to fly by these days and another summer is over. We have closed down our grounds for the winter as our access road becomes very rough over this period. On Easter Sunday, 27 of our members walked in to Geyserland Leisure Park and enjoyed a picnic lunch. We spent several hours during the afternoon exploring the property. The situation at present is that a full Rotorua District Council meeting has approved our application, however, there are three conditions attached to their approval.

At the time of writing, correspondence is being undertaken between the District Council and Geyserland Leisure Park solicitors on these conditions.

The N.Z.N.F. ½ A.G.M. is all set up and members of the R.S.C. look forward to meeting visitors as well as enjoying the meeting and evening functions.

WAIKATO OUTDOOR SOCIETY

Since our last report in the Naturist things have really begun to move at W.O.S. Our new clubhouse is finally underway and should be in full use in the very near future. We are looking forward to being able to accommodate our visitors better (opossum proof provision for your chilly bins!) We are also including in our new works plan considerable landscaping for a new car- park (the old one being taken for the clubhouse) and the children's playground. With a lot of hard work over the winter months and a bit of dry weather we will have a real face-lift by next season.

With all our activities lately, unfortunately we didn't get to any of the cam pins over Easter, but we hope they were successful. We have several social schemes planned for the winter months while we await a brand new hot and sunny season.

AUCKLAND SUN CLUB INC.

The past season has seen great advances forward both on the grounds and the Clubhouse. Camping areas for Trailer Campers have been cleared and an access road for them formed. A separate area for the children is being prepared and should be ready by next spring. The pool with its plastic coating looks terrific, probably the best in the country. With many of our members getting keen on miniten it won't be long before the area we have marked out for a court will be transformed into a usable feature. If the miniten players are as good as our volley ball players, they will beat just about everyone around.

The Clubhouse is not far from being usable and we hope to have some competition and sports evenings held there during the winter as part of our social activity programme, which has already started. We still have a few vacancies for couples and families who wish to join and enjoy our Club.

SOUTH CANTERBURY SUN CLUB INC.

Unfortunately we have had to move from our cottage and grounds at Albury as the farmer sold his farm and the new owner requires the cottage. It was quite a task moving all the furniture and bits and pieces which at the moment are being stored at members homes.

We had quite a good season and again had a number of visitors from other clubs and from overseas. Membership remains about the same with a few members leaving and a few newcomers. At the moment we are waiting to hear if our application for just over 3 acres of ground, on a long term lease is approved. The area is approximately 1½ miles from Pleasant Point, next to the river, so is much nearer to Timaru. There is a small spring fed stream bordering the property with willow trees and all being well we shall plant a selection of trees and have a few facilities. If any other club members wish to visit us in the coming season, it would be most advisable to contact the secretary P.O. Box 610 Timaru to get any up to date information on the new grounds and it's location.

TARANAKI NATURISTS CLUB

Much enthusiasm in our club for running the next National Rally. One of our members is allowing us to use his property for same. It will be a Tolaga Bay type of rally. We intend to introduce a lot of new ideas into rallies, particularly involving the whole family. After all, what other organisations in New Zealand have so much to offer for the whole family?

Our annual cabaret will be held on 9th August in the new Racecourse complex at New Plymouth. Members of other clubs will be particularly welcome. Please contact our secretary if you are interested.

This year we will be doing a complete update of the Camping Directory. We are still in need of records, photos, personal knowledge, etc. to compile a history of the Nudist Movement in New Zealand.

WANGANUI SUN CLUB INC.

The Wanganui Sun Club has had a very good summer in spite of the lack of sunshine hours. Since November we have almost doubled our membership and the new sunners are all very active and full of great ideas.

For the second year in a row, we have held our saunas throughout the summer, and as these are so popular, now hold them each week.

Water has been put on at the clubhouse, and we now have cooking facilities, so this will make life easier for any visitors passing through.

We look forward to another equally successful and enjoyable year coming up.

ASHES TO ASHES

Now this happened early one Friday
Willy's mother had gone to the shops
Grandad was out in the garden
And father in pub on the hops.

Mum told Willy to stay in the kitchen
And play with his bat and his ball
But he found a box of matches
His father had dropped in the hall.

Willy looked over his shoulder
And seeing nobody about
Opened up that little box
And lifted a Lucifer out.

It took three strikes to light it
But it broke as it burst into flame
And fell back down on the carpet
From whence a bigger flame came.

Grandad saw the smoke from the garden
Dropped his hoe and broke into a run
Right to the neighbour's telephone
And soon he'd dialled 111.

In no time at all the engines arrived
And firemen just don't play games
They did their job and did it well
And soon had control of the flames.

And when the fire was all over
And when the smoke and flames were no more.
All they could find of wee Willy
Was a pile of wet ashes on the floor.

When mother came home from her shopping
A tear rolled down from her eye
Then sobbing she picked up the ashes
And put them in the oven to dry.

Now our Willy's an egg timer
Just ashes no arms or legs.
And he works every morning at seven
Timing his father's boiled eggs.

If you don't want to be like wee Willy
And work every morning at seven
Or shovel coal way down below
Or play a harp up in Heaven

Kids do what your parents tell you
Without a whine or a moan
Play as much as you like with your bat and ball
But leave those matches alone.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB NEWS

PACIFIC SUN CLUB NUDIST FARMLAND

We have just had a wonderful Easter weekend at Sun Leisure where the annual N.A.Q. Olympic Sports Rally was held this year, a good time was had by all socially as well as sports. Congratulations to Colin and Co.

It was a pity more of our members were not able to go but we managed six units. The weather was fabulous, 32 degrees most days. There was some terrific Miniten, beaut to watch. Our ladies doubles were in the final to a tie breaker, which kept all on the edge of their seats. Also, our juniors were in boys and mixed to the final. Didn't win but as runner up, were presented with a new trophy to boost all juniors, called "The Most Improved" award. The juniors from all clubs were terrific to watch, our Nudists of the Future. This yearly event is an excellent idea to keep the good-will between clubs.

Club news is our Toilet Block is really finished. Next thing is, up goes the Windmill to take place of the arm aching pulls on the old motor and pump which takes care of the water at the moment. The enthusiasm of the working members is commendable.

CORIO VALLEY, VICTORIA.

Club membership steadily increases, with the local telephone directory listing and this magazine being the two avenues of first contact for the majority of interested enquirers.

July will be A.G.M. time once again, and like always the old cry who will stand for this or that? Corio has this year under its first lady president been a progressive year and one of quiet stabilisation. As this financial year closes, provided next committee continues the past year's sound administration, Corio looks good.

Whilst the cooler days prevent members from enjoying fun in the sun, our grounds remain a pleasant place to retreat to for site maintenance work, barbecue with friends, nature walk to the creek or simply being among fellow nudists sharing experiences sitting around the "camp fire".

Recently formed Corio Valley Nudist Youth Group are enthusiastically involved in setting up their special area within chub grounds, plus organising various activities, some fun - some serious. With a large number of Corio youth, and under the leadership of Gwenda and Liane, expect to hear more of this keen element of our nudist club!

A.C.T. NUDIST CLUB

Yes, the land is at last ours! Now the work really starts, and we are in the throes of making development plans, designing buildings, marking out campsites and so on. Our first development was the sinking of a water bore on the land, during the Canberra Day long weekend. Many of our members had never seen a bore being drilled before, and so were very interested. The guys working the drill rig hadn't seen nudists before, either, so the interest was mutual! We now have a good supply of water, with a flow rate of 4800 gallons per hour.

We recently bought an entire toilet block from a Government building which was to be demolished, and held a working bee to strip it all from the building. There was a big turn-up, and working with friends turned out to be fun, much to everyone's surprise, and we rather enjoyed ourselves. The fittings were quite a bargain, and will be put to good use in our shower/toilet block + meeting room, the first permanent building to be built on our land.

Our float in the Canberra Day parade created plenty of interest - we were one of the largest floats in the parade as well as one of the noisiest! Such exercises are well worth while, though, and are usually repaid with enquiries about membership.

Over Easter several of our members visited Rosco club in N.S.W., and had a most enjoyable time. It's very pleasant to be able to visit other clubs, and be made so welcome. Soon we will have facilities on our own site, so we will be able to repay the hospitality. However you don't have to wait until then - we have swim and sauna nights every Saturday throughout the year as well as a full social calendar, and we're always pleased to see visitors from other clubs. Drop us a line at P.O. Box 242, Woden A.C.T., and we'll make you very welcome.

NATURI SUN CLUB

The aboriginal name "NATURI" means "HIGH SANDY SOIL", and most appropriate for our club surroundings, for we are part of a large private estate on a plateau high in the hilly country north of the Hawkesbury River, on the way to Gosford. Established for many years, we welcome prospective members to join us and enjoy the leisure time on the delightful sunbathing lawns where towels or sun- lounges can be used to lay upon. We had the pleasure of meeting members from N.Z. and Sth. Australia recently, and their remarks were nearly identical "What a wonderful area for a relaxed holiday in such natural surroundings." We very much enjoy the wood fire sauna, the sizzling steak and onions on the barbecue, and the delightful atmosphere and enjoyment in the Club house, say nothing for the energy and effort when playing miniten with members on the hard courts before a dive into the beautiful crystal water in the sunken blue fully tiled spacious swimming pool.

In our club there exists that rare quality of people. We care about the environment. We love the peace and happiness we find there. It is indeed a very great joy to associate with our members around the Sunday afternoon tea table for a social chat in the picnic area. Many thanks to the ladies on our Social Committee who certainly do a wonderful job.

What more does one want for a beautiful weekend or Sunday away from the hustle and bustle of every day life.

Potential nudists are invited to write to our Sec., P.O. Box 11, Berowra. N.S.W., 2081, to arrange a visit. There are caravans and a cabin to let at very reasonable cost to members and visitors. Please send a S.A.E. for a reply.

SUNSHINE FAMILIES NUDIST RESORT

Our swimming pool is now finished at long last and getting plenty of use. Our next big project will be a big clubhouse. It will be built out of concrete building blocks and will be 8Oft long by 4Oft wide. It will contain a 15 x 15 jet pool and a small shop.

We are presently waiting to have the electricity connected so that we can supply power to caravans, etc.

Unfortunately we have had to dispose of a lot our horses as they became a nuisance and were used very little, hence the change in our Club name from Nudist Ranch to Nudist Resort.

NORTHSIDE COUNTRY CLUB

Northside are looking forward to enjoying another good year in 1980, with a lot of club activity coming up. A lot of work has been done on our grounds with the completion of the pool extension, rotary hoeing and sowing of a new lawn on the sunbaking area and the completion of the utilities court. The amenities block has had a face lift and members becoming very conscious of their sites. The grounds are really looking beautiful.

The club will be updating their water supply, a long overdue project, with the installation of two 5000 gallon water tanks and new pipes.

Membership is gradually increasing with membership enquiries coming in steadily.

Northside will be accepting supporter membership, from couples or families only, and only on specific days.

We welcome enquiries from couples and families re joining and are situated approximately 50 kms from Melbourne in Heathcote Junction, near Kilmore. All enquiries to the Secretary, P.O. Box 107, South Melbourne, 3205.

Wishing all at N.Z. Naturist and all our nudist friends a prosperous and eventful year.

NUDIST ASSOCIATION OF
QUEENSLAND REPORT

The N.A.Q.'s second Easter social and sports convention was held this year at Sunleisure. The grounds were A-1 and there were signs of progress everywhere.

The weather was kind to us for the four days, and the sporting competitions were very fierce.

Sunleisure won the Petonque; the Three Bears won Volley Ball; Good Companions won both men's and mixed miniten doubles; Sunshine Families won the women's miniten doubles and the junior boys, girls and mixed miniten doubles.

The senior and junior club of the year awards both were won by Sunshine Families for the second year running. Congratulations and many thanks to Colin and Paul Aldred and the members of Sunleisure for a most successful N.A.Q. Convention.

A.N.F. REPORT

Mike Severs - Secretary

The interview with Alan McCombe in the last edition of the N.Z. Naturist was very interesting. The first question asked of Alan was about SPAN, and I'm happy to be able to report that communication between the ANF and the NZNF on SPAN has started, in the form of a draft set of proposals for discussion. I hope something fruitful will come of it.

Later in the interview John Gilmour asked Alan about an INF Club Guide for our area, and pointed out that it's expensive for New Zealanders visiting Australia to have to fork out $7.00 for an INF Guide, when all they want is the Australian section. The problem is about to be solved! We are bringing out a new Australia & New Zealand Club Guide, and have sent out a circular to all Australian and New Zealand clubs asking for details to put in it. We have also contacted the other South Pacific clubs, too.

The new Guide will be available well in time for the next summer season, and should sell for about $1.50 per copy. Will all Clubs who haven't returned the circular to me please do so as soon as possible. I think I contacted all Clubs and nudist organisations in our area, but if I missed you please write to me and I'll send you a copy of the circular post haste.

Rosemary and I have just returned from a very pleasant Easter "mini convention" at Rosco, where this year's annual ANF Convention will be held. While I've barely recovered from the last Convention, Rosco already have arrangements well in hand for the next one! It promises to be a good one.

During Easter, Rosco called a meeting of N.S.W. and A.C.T. clubs to discuss the formation of a N.S.W. / A.C.T. nudist association, like the N.A.V. or N.A.Q. Those at the meeting expressed keen interest in the idea, and I hope it gets off the ground.

The A.N.F. supporter scheme is going well, with a sizeable number of supporters already enrolled. It will take a little while for the system to be running smoothly in top gear, but we are getting a calendar of supporter events organised, and hope that it will be in the Supporter News that accompanies this edition.

Supporter membership costs $8 per year for members of ANF affiliated clubs, and $12 per year to non-members. This gives you admission to supporter events at clubs, a year's supply of the New Zealand Naturist flown out from New Zealand, and the Supporter News, produced by the A.N.F. and detailing Supporter events at Clubs. Remember New Zealanders can be ANF Supporters, too!
