Great News!!

At the end of last year we sat around contemplating our second consecutive year of loses. What should we do? What could we do?

Being a small editorial team of only two people, working in our spare time - without payment - on the N.Z. Naturist, there seemed very little extra we could do. Despondency permeated the air until, at our A.G.M. during the Christmas break, we talked to representatives from clubs who had gathered from all over New Zealand.

We told them of our predicament and came away, from that meeting, despondency replaced with enthusiasm. Why? because the result of these discussions was an agreement by twelve dedicated nudists to supply the N.Z. Naturist with the largest and most comprehensive assortment of written material we have seen in the last nine years.

For you, the reader, this has meant more pages of great articles like 'Acceptance and Encouragement of Social Nudity' "Days of Ancient Rome" (the first article to use the colour of the centre pages to maximise appeal) a format that has proved very popular. Then there was "Green Island Now A Memory" a history of the Orchard Sun Club, "From Tragedy - The Phoenix Rises" the story of how Bay of Plenty Sun Club bounced back from an arson attack on their club house.

In September there was "Nude Beaches - The Legalities" a report from the Free Beach, "Skin Cancer and You" advice from the Auckland Cancer Society on looking after your skin, "Nelson" a report from a club at the top of South Island and "Clothes Optional Living" a story on Mapua Leisure Park and its optional lifestyle. In this issue there are articles on the free beaches of the Auckland Provincial Area and the Wanganui Sun Club.

As well as these articles there has been the regular items of "Naturists News From Around The World" "Looking Back" and the thought provoking and sometimes controversial "Talking Point".

The resultant effect of all of this effort has been not only to provide a magazine that you want to read but within the last 12 months we have increased sales and produced a profit. A marvellous achievement in these troubled times and great news for everyone.

Be assured we will not be resting on our laurels as we launch into 1989. We not only want to keep you informed on nudism within New Zealand, but as New Zealanders travel overseas more we want to provide for the growing number of readers who seek information concerning nudist venues in other countries.

The N.Z. Naturist has emerged a stronger and healthier magazine looking forward to the future with enthusiasm.

NATURIST NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Compiled by Geraldine Wayers and Roy Cox

USA

Nudist colouring book for children.

The sponsor of this book is Jim Cunningham. Both he and his wife have a personal mission to purge children of genital hang-ups that are part of the western 'civilised' values. The colouring book is well produced on stout cream-wove pages. The outline pictures show indoor and outdoor scenes of people of every stage of physical development from five or six to fifty or sixty.

They are anatomically correct but the treatment is suitable, basic and non-emotive. The chief impression is of peace and harmony, stripped of most aspects of consumerism.

Camping, swimming, diving, trampolining and photography are shown, together with cooking and saying one's prayers. A dolphin and a cat are the only animals.

All in all, a worthy effort that naturist parents can confidently give to their younger children. Its message is sincere, its figures well drawn and, providing junior can grapple with skin tones, it offers a recipe for childish industry and parental satisfaction.

JUNIORFEST WEEKEND

Timber Trails, a club in Pennsylvania has just run a special activities weekend for children and teens and families in general.

Activities included an "anything goes" Olympics featuring messy, slippery, dirty, and just plain wet events. On the Saturday night an "unpyjama party" and sleep over was planned. A "birthday suit" party celebrated everyone's birthdays at once, with dress being very formal: birthday suits. Special "bareDare" contests, stunts no one in their right minds would do dressed, occurred all weekend. Timber Trails popular "kid of the day" programme was to be in full operation and some special award certificates were to be issued. Sounds like a great weekend for the younger members of the club.

RUNNING BARE

Colin Fletcher, America's best known walker quoted as saying "the best dress for walking is nakedness."

Apparently many believe this holds for running too. Cypress Cove nudist resort held a "run for the beaches" and raised over $1,000 for free beach legal defence.

Kaniksu Ranch near Spokane held its "Bare Bums Fun Run" and over 100 runners turned out. A fifth of them ran bare.

Spokane's running club newsletter comments "the finish was novel, as I've never been cheered on by 75-100 nude people before. Sunbathing was everywhere. Will I attend the Third Annual Bare Bums Fun Run? You bet your sweet cheeks!"

From Clothed With the Sun, the quarterly Journal of Clothes - Optional Living.

CANADA

Vendors offer service at nude beach

Sandwich-maker Klaus is one of a variety of vendors offering sunbathers along Wreck Beach, a haven for nude sunbathers since the 1960s, everything from beer to haircuts. Nude vendors bring the service to you, you don't have to move. They carry gym bags full of cold beer, pop and fruit juice. In fact anything from haircuts, a massage with a manicure and pedicure, food of every description and even calls on a cellular telephone.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police estimate that on a sunny weekend day, as many as 6000 sunbathers (beach regulars say twice that number) doff their clothes and claim a patch of sand along the beach.

HOLLAND

Nudism legalised

Recently a new article has been added to the penal code by the Dutch parliament. It contains three elements:

A.  Being nude in public can never constitute a crime against morality (as it did thus far), Jut at most an infringement of public order, in terms of punishment comparable with a parking ticket.

B.  Municipalities are now legally entitled to designate nudist or "clothes optional" beaches, which before required special permission from the Attorney General.

C.  Even outside the designated nudist beaches, being nude in public is only punishable if it happens on "places that are not suitable for nude recreation."

And what are suitable places?

The Dutch Minister of Justice answered in parliament that "nowadays it is considered more and more acceptable that people swim and sunbathe without clothes."

The situation in Holland is now comparable with that in Denmark.

So in future Holland will have three types of beaches:

a)  Designated suitable places (Nudist beaches)

b)  Designated unsuitable places (so called textile beaches)

c)  "Other places suitable for nude recreation" (either designated or not by the local municipality.)

And of course with legal status comes the responsibilities. Nudists should behave decently and show consideration to those who do not sympathise with naturism or in other words -

TACT FOR THE NUDE ONES AND TOLERANCE FOR THE DRESSED ONES

AUSTRALIA

Sun's the secret

If nutritional specialist, Dr Damien Downing is to be believed, Australians should have healthy skin, strong bones and little trouble conceiving children.

Sunshine is the secret. Moderate exposure to natural ultra violet light boosted the immune system and acted as a natural antibiotic, he said. Regular sunshine, in moderate doses, could help a great range of problems from acne to diabetes, psoriasis, bone fractures in old age and depression.

AU NATUREL  -  WHERE PRACTICAL

Jacob Creeke found that naked was, surprisingly, natural.

If a person is running naked in the bush and no one is there to see her or him, is that person really naked?

Such deep philosophical musings - among other far shallower impulses - pecked mercilessly at my mind as I drove toward an Auckland club. Sorry, make that Sun club.

No, I am not a nudist, at least, I don't think I am a nudist.

I had a tough enough time stripping to my underwear for a recent medical.

So maybe that's why I grew increasingly nervous as I approached the entrance of the Auckland Outdoor Health Club in Henderson, West Auckland.

It was the site of a recent rally (and Xmas camp) for about 200 nudists from around New Zealand.

The club is one of the 22 clubs affiliated to the New Zealand Nudist Federation and it is among the country's largest.

Naturist, by the way, is a synonym for nudist, people who simply consider 'au naturel' to be just that, natural.

"Nudists are not opposed to wearing clothes" says one N.Z.N.F. pamphlet. The booklet basically strips the idea down to a core concept of "clothed when practical, unclothed when possible".

Indeed, clothes can feel pretty superfluous in Auckland, when summer heat can melt a chocolate bar.

Sighting my first nudist seemed to confirm the concept.

After all, there was this very pretty lady walking across the road ahead of me. Barring the sun visor on her head, towel in her hand and the sandals on her feet, she was totally devoid of any textile whatsoever.

Yet, it was I, swathed not only in clothes but also a car, who looked and felt conspicuous.

That's probably the first feeling - anticipatory anxiety notwithstanding - I experienced.

Somehow, even in my most casual jeans and T-shirt, among all of those naked people I felt so - I don't know - dressed.

When you are on your way to a nudist club for the first time, with no real idea of what it will really be like, you tend to disbelieve until you see.

I saw. And I believe.

Well, I believe I saw what I believe I saw.

And if I did, then I believe I saw several hundred men, women and children of all ages and descriptions sunbathe, swim, walk, talk, play shuffleboard and volleyball, read, nap and eat lunch just as anyone else might. Except for one thing.

They were naked.

Actually, naked is my word.

While I must have heard the words "nude," "nudism" and "nudist" dozens of times. I don't recall hearing the word "naked" even once. Naturists just seem to prefer the word "nude".

That's kind of surprising, when I think about it. But it wasn't the only surprise at Auckland Outdoor Health Club.

"I'm not here showing off anything, because I don't really have anything to show off," explained one attendee.

He and others took great pains to convey that what they call "social nudism" primarily means the assembly of people whose single, common belief is that nudity is natural, respectable, healthy and fun.

My own observations suggest that, were it not for their state of undress, these people are pretty conservative.

Illicit drugs, public passion and intoxication are among a litany of offenses that can subject the offender to immediate and permanent expulsion from both the club and the nudist community.

And it is a community.

Child safety, for example, is considered and accepted as the concern of all.

So, explained one nudist, adults will keep an eye on pools and playgrounds, whether their own children are there or not.

Nudists say that their nudity tells the community they have nothing to hide, that each accepts the others for the people they truly are, not their looks, clothes or status.

Nudists trust each other, and several I talked with insist that whatever thefts may occur in camps are perpetrated by visitors, not other nudists.

This reflects one of the most salient attitudes I perceived among the nudists: respect for the rights of others.

"We don't want to offend anybody," said one, who even warns prospective photo processors that film contains nude images.

The overriding feeling I got is that nudists embody the ultimate live-and-let-live creed.

"I feel comfortable around people in the nude," proclaimed an Auckland girl, who has been a nudist for six of her 16 years. "I don't hate anyone in the nude, I feel I can trust them."

By talking with nudists like her while visiting the club, I also learned that:

#Looking is OK; staring is not.

#Clothing worn as protection against hazards such as sunburn or athletic injury is OK.

#Nudists do not sit down on another person's chair without using a towel, nor will another person sit on theirs.

#Volleyball is closely identified and popular with nudists mainly because it is any easy, inexpensively provided, non-contact sport that is fun and allows many persons to participate.

Ah, yes. Participation.

Unquestionably the most common question I heard before my visit was "Are you going to take your clothes off?"

Unquestionably the most common question I heard after my visit was "Did you take your clothes off?"

Well, I'll tell you.

Maybe...

then called "The National Review" compiled by Frank Murphy

EDITORIAL

"Naturism" verses "Nudism" seems a hardy annual for discussion in our magazines. It seems to be very important to many to be able to recognise a well defined distinction and considerable effort is spent trying to clarify the difference. Is it really important? In some clubs naturism also implies vegetarianism as well as abstaining from alcohol and smoking. Developing physical fitness and healthy living is also emphasised by club activities. It has wider meaning than social nudity.

The aim of Nudism: A healthy mind in a body is undoubtedly the prime purpose of nudism. They are interdependent and predominately follow as a result of naked enjoyment of sunshine and air. The inclusion of many other diet limitations and exercise assist in this direction but only as an adjunct. They are an individuals choice for their personal benefit and surely not necessarily an essential part of naturism.

Nudism can be equated with cleanliness, frankness and honesty. It has removed the distorted impressions concerning sex, it encourages an honest acceptance of human physical differences, the less perfect form is more common than the perfect and becomes generally accepted. Self-consciousness, surprisingly enough to the uninitiated, disappears and nakedness is not consciously realised. Ill health, often a reason for joining a club, no longer dominates the individuals concern for pleasant company, exercise or relaxation with sunshine and fresh air creates a brighter spirit and a cheerfulness which goes far to promote improved health. Whether these activities be called naturism or nudism the purpose and result is still the same.

9 WAYS TO KILL A CLUB

(1) Don't go to socials or meetings.

(2) If you do go late.

(3) Whenever you attend a meeting, find fault with the President and other officers.

(4) Never accept an office, it's so much easier to sit back and criticise.

(5) If you are appointed on a committee, don't go to meetings. If you are not appointed, get peeved about it.

(6) When your opinion is asked for, at a meeting, reply that you have nothing to say but after the meeting tell everyone just how things should be done.

(7) Do nothing more than is absolutely necessary. When others do the lions share of the work tell everyone the club is run by a clique.

(8) Don't hurry to pay you sub, wait till the end of the season or don't pay at all.

(9) Don't bother about recruiting new members, let the same hard working few do that too.

NEWS FROM THE CLUBS...

Auckland Outdoor Health Club

Although, in company with Messrs Watts and Nash, and not a few others, the problems of finance - or lack of it - weighs rather heavy with us, we do feel that we are starting to see a return for much of the hard work we have put in over the last two 'off seasons We have a fine concrete bridge that, I'm convinced, would take any weight and therefore have access to all parts of the grounds. This will allow the two private baches, that are waiting to be put up, to go ahead. Other developments are underway that should ensure that we have the essential facilities for an enjoyable summer, even if we have to put off some of our more ambitious schemes till our bank balance is happier. By the time you read this we will have kicked off the season with a children's party given by Jock and Biddy for Susan, held a dance and our A.G.M.

If anyone is bound for Auckland this summer we shall be glad to see them. There will be someone staying out at the club for most of the Christmas - New Year period, January and February so we look forward to an enjoyable time.

Gisborne Sun Club

A visitor, after passing through many paddocks, emphasised the remoteness of the club by commenting on the "7 gates to heaven".

Otago Sun and Health Club

The last stages of excavating the pool uncovered several very hard boulders, up to three and four feet across.

Some charges of gelignite broke up the biggest of the boulders and gave the kids a few thrills. With broken rock lying everywhere and hammers swinging the place has looked more like a prison quarry lately, however, we are now practically ready to finish concreting the walls and the three foot surround path. Plastering the pool will probably be left over to next year.

At a recent social evening a short film of the Auckland club's activities was screened. There is expected to be a good representation from Dunedin at the National Rally and we are hoping as many northerners as possible will find their way here after it.

FREE BEACHES

AN AUCKLAND GUIDE

by Adrianne Caldwell

  Volleyball score

Want to go nude? There are a number of beaches around Auckland where nudists go for swimming and sunbathing away from the crowds.

The far end of Long Bay is probably the most popular. In midsummer there may be dozens of naked people on the beach. At any time of the year, on a sunny day, someone will be there having a quiet sunbathe. Large Pohutukawas provide shade, and swimming is good at all times of the tide. You can walk over the hill to the Okura River, or around the rocks at low tide. From the far end of the main beach, cross the stream and walk around two headlands to the second beach along. If the tide is high, there is a track along the top of the cliff. Long Bay is under jurisdiction of the Takapuna City Council, who have a bylaw restricting nudity on beaches, so you may be asked to cover up.

St Leonards Beach, below the cliffs of Takapuna Grammar School, has been used by nudists for longer than most of us can remember. Access is by a steep concrete path at the end of St Leonards Road. Swimming is good at all tides, but there is very little space for sunbathing at high tide, as the water can come right up to the cliff. Once again, the Takapuna City Council warden may ask you to cover up.

Another beach on the North Shore, used by locals, is Fitzpatrick Bay, at the bottom of Balmain Road in Birkenhead. The beach is surrounded by pine trees, and has a grassy area for games and barbecues. Swimming is best at full tide. You may find yourself sharing this beach with dogs, horses, and water-skiers, all illegal. It also catches the south-westerly winds.

The islands of the Hauraki Gulf offer plenty of freedom, especially if you have a boat. At Motuihe, you may go nude at the far end of the main beach, under the Pohutukawas. Two beaches at Waiheke are popular with nudists, and swimming is excellent. Little Palm Beach has council approval. Walk west around the rocks from the main beach.

At Onetangi, walk to your left past a guest house and around a headland, or over the rocks if the tide is high.

In Auckland, the traditional nudist beach is Ladies Bay, just beyond St Heliers. It is mainly used by men, who like to go there during the lunch hour. We used to go to the second beach along, but now tend to use the first beach, mixing easily with the "textiles" Swimming is best at full to half tide.

  Volleyball score

A steep path, signposted "Ladies Bay' goes down to the beach from a dip in Cliff Road.

A small group of sunbathers go to the far end of Mellons Bay, in Howick. A large, fallen tree trunk shields this corner from the rest of the beach, and the water is beautifully clear for swimming. Be cautious here, as there is a house overlooking the beach, and complaints have been made. The occasional nor-easterly blows in. This beach is ideal for a barbecue, as it is only a short, level walk from the car park.

Further out on the east coast are Dynamite Bay and Tawhitokino. Dynamite Bay is on the foreshore of the Waitawa Explosives Reserve, and is seldom used by the general public. Walk around the point from the western end of Kawakawa Bay. Tawhitokino is over the hill at the far end of the Kawakawa Bay Coast Road. From the car park, walk east over the rocks, then go up the ARA track beside the stream. The track can be treacherous when wet. It is a beautiful beach, with good swimming.

Access to both of these beaches is restricted to low and half tides.

Bethell's Beach offers many possibilities. From the car park, you can walk south to the cave at the end of the beach. Walking north, cross the stream, and sunbathe up on the dunes. Below the house on the saddle is a tiny cove, reached by a track through the flax. The waves surging against the rocky coastline make tremendous scenery. In many places you can walk out onto the rocks at low tide, for fishing, fossicking, or gathering mussels. Over the saddle is O'Neill's Beach, which is quite good for swimming. There are many nice spots for sunbathing on the grass behind the beach, and another big cave near the end.

The car park for Lake Wainamu Scenic Reserve is beside the bridge about one kilometre before Bethell's Beach. The walk to the top of the lakes takes just over one hour. Here the stream tumbles over a series of small waterfalls as it reaches the lake. Make sure you take your camera. Best for nudity during the week.

At Muriwai, turn off along the road to the golf course and park at the end. Walk north from here. The camping ground has some secluded corners during the off season. Muriwai North has vehicle access to the beach through Woodhill Forest. The gate closes at sundown. There are miles of isolated sand dunes, and I have seen fish swimming along in the waves. If you have a suitable vehicle, you can drive right out to the Kaipara Heads, and camp on the beach.

Further afield, north of Auckland, are the Kai-iwi Lakes, about 45 kilometres north of Dargaville. The lakes are in a setting of pine trees, reminiscent of lakes in North America, and camping is permitted under the trees. Fish for trout if you have a licence. A track leads over the sand hills to Bayly's Beach. Nudity is recommended only during the off season.

Emiel Roland, an early campaigner for free beaches, claimed one little beach for Auckland nudists. Emiel's beach is on the Manukau Harbour, near Huia.

Photo: Leif  Heilberg

Volleyball score

It is reached by a bush track, the Con Bryan Track, leading off the Huia Point Lookout Road. The beach has a backdrop of native bush, is good for swimming, and popular with fishermen. At low tide there are rock pools oysters and mussels. This beach is best in midsummer, and is a favourite of many people. Once again, it is exposed to the westerlies, and the track is slippery after rain.

Out on the west coast is Whatipu, a vast sand spit at the entrance to the Manukau Harbour. The main attraction is fishing. There are caves to explore, tramping tracks, a guest house, and a paddock for camping.

Karekare is a fascinating place. Majestic cliffs, waterfalls, grassy glades of pohutukawas, lupin-covered dunes, rocky headlands for fishing and mussel-gathering, and bush for the tramping enthusiast. To reach the northern end of the beach, go up Watchman's road to the end, then along a track through the bush and over the sandhills. Karekare has become very popular with the general public, and at weekends you will need to hide away in the sand dunes, or walk over the point towards Whatipu. There is a small ARA camping area beside the bridge at the bottom of the hill, just before the houses.

Piha is now very populated, and probably best during the week. The council have a large camping ground opposite the store. There are a number of places to explore. At the end of Glen Esk Road, a track leads to a waterfall in the bush. Just before the Surf Lifesaving Clubhouse is the Marawhara Track, with some rather delightful grassy hideaways. The nude part of the main beach is usually at the northern end. From here, a track leads over the hill to White's Beach, which is fairly secluded.

White's Beach can also be reached from Anawhata Road. From the turnoff, drive nine kilometres to the fourth car park along. Walk down the driveway marked Rose Track, a long, steep climb back up again. Take care of the rips when swimming.

On the east coast are Omaha, Tawharanui ARA Farm Park, and Goat Island Beach. These last two are marine reserves, ideal for snorkeling. Tawharanui is a very pretty beach, with white sand and rocky headlands, a camping area and plenty of opportunities for walking.

At Omaha, walk along the beach away from the houses, or at low tide, walk around to the next little cove, which has pink sand. At Goat Island, walk north along the beach to the rocks.

Between Pakiri and Mangawhai, side roads give access to the coast at Te Arai Beach, Eyres Point, and Pacific Ocean Beach. All of these are wide ocean beaches backed by sand dunes. You may also like to visit Lake Tomorata, just off the road to Mangawhai Forest Headquarters. The lake has a boat ramp, and an enclosed swimming area for children. To go nude, walk around the left-hand shore to a clump of pine trees.

South of Auckland, on the west coast, is Karioitahi, just out of Waiuku. From the car park, walk south to a quiet spot. The ARA Awhitu Regional Park is also suitable when uncrowded. Use the second beach, over the hill past the camping area. Swimming is best at high tide. White sand but no shade.

The Free Beach Group publish a comprehensive booklet of beaches all over New Zealand, which are recommended for nude swimming and sunbathing. This is available to members only, so if you would like to join, please write to the Free Beach Group (inc), P.O. Box 41-171, St Lukes, Auckland 3.

for a Summer Holiday

Photo: Peter Northway

Our members can wander through the farm on which we are sited, or up into the forestry without hauling on a pair of trousers. A veteran nudist from Canada recently told me this was the only club in the world he had seen where you could simply go for a walk or climb a mountain without "pulling your pants on."

Access to the grounds is directly off State Highway 2, it is easy to find and fairly good, the gate will be locked but by writing to us beforehand or talking to one of our number at the rally then that can be fixed.

It's an absolutely ideal camp site to have a really relaxing family holiday in. There are 12 power points for caravans, and plenty of unpowered sites. We do not have hordes of permanent sites, seldom have all the sites been full. The clubhouse has all the necessary amenities to make a stay comfortable, with a kitchen, showers, washing facilities, and heaps of fridge and freezer space for the tenting fraternity.

Our club house sits up on an island in the middle of the grounds and from the picnic barbecue area and the sun deck you can laze away the hot summer days watching somebody else playing miniten, or swimming in the pool.

We have some unique traditions at Wanganui. It is not unusual at night to be asked out on a 'possum shoot', or to go eeling. There is nothing quite like fresh smoked eel for breakfast especially when your hosts do all the yukky bits.

If you are going to the rally or just looking for a super nudist holiday, then let me convince you that a stay at WANGANUI SUN CLUB is just the answer.

Wanganui Sun Club is located on the Para Para Scenic Highway 15 minutes from the city. It is just far enough into the country to be quiet and peaceful and close enough to town to be able to buzz in and pick up the groceries or take in kids to a movie in the unlikely event it rains.

Our 60 adult members are made up of about 50% nudist local to Wanganui, and 50% nudists from out of town. The club was one of the earliest established in New Zealand, it existed on the founders own city property up until the late 1960's when it moved out into the country. The club was a place to meet, it was a venue to practice nudism and nothing more, with none of the facilities that we would expect in a club nowadays. In the middle of the 1970's it moved from its tiny site on the banks of a stream to its present site. The site was originally a swamp, and not very friendly at all to start with, but as so many clubs have the members got together to fix it. They drained the swamp, built a clubhouse, and very slowly added the amenities that we enjoy today.

In the last five years since the power was put into the grounds the changes have happened at a much faster rate.

The grounds are now situated in a sun drenched valley where the wind doesn't dare to blow. A stream meanders through, its the only boundary between us and Timberlands forestry. In fact one of the charms of Wanganui Sun Club is that there are no high fences or hedges showing you where Nudism starts and ends.

When on holiday only part of the time is spent at the camp site, even a great one like ours, a nice way to spend your time out and about is to take a few days to explore the Wanganui River and the Whanganui River National Park using our club as your base.

The Wanganui River is the second longest, yet it is the longest navigable waterway in the country and is without doubt one of the most beautiful. It has a romantic history for both Maori and European.

The river is navigable to the township of Taumarunui and includes some 240 named and listed rapids. The scenic grandeur of the middle and upper reaches of the river are fascinating and there are long stretches of steep, rugged bush covered banks.

Up river on the right bank are picnic spots which often can be visited by both road and river. The club is only 2 kms from the river road which leaves State Highway 2 to climb over "Gentle Annie" and follow the river north. At the top of Gentle Annie there are magnificent panoramic views of the river, it is also the start of the Aramoana Walk.

The Aramoana walk is a two to three hour walk of around 7 kms for the round trip and rated as a good family walk.

The river road follows the Wanganui river for approximately 74 kms, winding through numerous historic Maori villages and spectacular forest clad reserves. Sightseers should allow plenty of time to enjoy both the scenic beauty and the historic features on the route.

Some of the places of note are the marae at Koriniti, at which visitors are welcome, the recently restored Kawana Flour Mill and of course Jerusulem the home of James K. Baxter in the early 1970's.

The river road also has another great walk, at Atene, it is six to eight hours long and you need to be of reasonable fitness. If you are not up to that you might prefer to wander through the Atene bush walk which is an informative 20 minute stroll through some typical Wanganui River bush country.

At Pipiriki the road leaves the river and heads back inland to State Highway 2. Pipiriki has a Conservation Department office for the Whanganui National Park, as well as picnic and camping areas with public toilets, fireplaces and hot and cold water. Jet boats operate out of Pipiriki, if you can stretch the holiday budget then a trip up to the drop scene is an experience you won't forget.

Full information on the walks, the trips and the places area available from the Department of Conservation on Victoria Avenue, Wanganui (the main street), or from the Information Centre.

In the city of Wanganui, which is only 18 kms from the club, there is the full range of activities and services for your enjoyment. We have one of the best regional museums and art galleries in the country, the only place I know you can see a Moa egg intact.

A nice way to spend an afternoon is to take a trip on the Paddle wheeler OTUNI which leaves daily from the town bridge and ferries you up to the Holy Lodge Winery. Holy Lodge Estate has a lot of good attractions not the least of which is tasting their vintage.

This summer holiday seems easy planned then, doesn't it. Pack up your caravan or tent and off to the Rally at Palmerston North, to meet old friends, maybe play a little sport and then up to Wanganui Sun Club to relax and sightsee for a few days.

To ensure you don't miss out on the best site on the grounds drop us a line now at Post Box 410 WANGANUI and let us know when you are arriving.

Thanks to the Wanganui Camera Club for the photos in this article.

PARADISE BEACH - GREECE by Leif Heilberg

The birds start chirping happily at the first light of dawn, here in the Greek Garden of Eden. The serenity of early morning on the magic island of Mykonos, is enhanced by the bird-song, the calm sea, and the balmy air.

It's early morning and the resort restaurant is abuzz with roomers, campers, and bungalow renters who enjoy a rich selection of breakfast food in the canteen.

When you see the lunch and dinner offerings, you will be amazed. No bountiful buffet ever had a more succulent selection of goodies.

Here in Paradise young people predominate. The vast majority of men and women are in their twenties, mostly single. They come from all over. You hear many languages spoken: English, German, French, Italian, Swedish, as well as Greek. It is truly a harmonious Babylon where all corners seek out and enjoy much the same plethora of vacation pleasures, namely sun, sea, fresh ocean breezes, shopping in boutiques, tasting the local cuisine, and the beach life which is largely clothing-optional here.

Mykonos is one of the most popular tourist centres in the lovely Cyclades islands. Legends say that the island took its name from the hero Mykonos, son of Ania, descendent of the God Apollo and the nymph Rhio. History tells us that the island's first inhabitants were the Carians from the west coast of Asia Minor.

The jet set rediscovered Mykonos a couple of decades ago and nothing has been the same ever since, what with the endless hundreds of thousands of tourists invading the island every summer. Today, Mykonos is a charming maze of narrow lanes bordered by gleaming white houses, square and flat-roofed in the local architectural tradition, mainly with the blue doors and window shutters.

The churches are white and blue like the houses, and since Mykonos has some 400 churches, in many streets the chapels are more numerous than houses. During the day one can browse the many shops for fashion, jewellery, souvenirs, and locally made woven items. At night the town comes alive with a variety of entertaining diversions. Restaurants, bars, and discotheques have gained Mykonos a reputation as a well-known international entertainment spot.

In town, many rooms can be rented for only a few dollars per night. Besides, there are plenty of hotels in all categories, both in town and out.

Very conveniently, a city bus service is provided to and from town every 15 minutes from early morning until night. Several adjoining beaches beyond Plati Yalos are within close walking distance, and a boat service is available every half hour to most other beaches, like Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia. These sandy beaches offer water sports and amenities to enhance one's vacation pleasure: water skiing, windsurfing, jet skis and most importantly of all, clothes-optional beach life.

Every day, hundreds of tourists take the bus to Plati Yalos and from there transfer onto converted fishing boats for a short trip to Paradise Beach or to one of the other beaches. Paradise Beach is also accessible by taxi, via a circuitous route, but few visitors use this means of access. This beach is popular, not only for its beauty and amenities, but also for the clothing-optional lifestyle practices there.

An overview of the beach goers here at Paradise Beach in 1988, would determine that approximately 25% are nude, another 50% topless, and the balance dressed in bathing suits. Despite these statistics, it does not appear evident that larger numbers of gawkers use the beach to get eyefuls of naked flesh. According to Freddy, the only individuals giving trouble are Arabs who frequently will demand to know where the girls are that can be bought. Those denizens of backwards and repressive societies fully equate nudity with sex and don't understand why the nude young women on the beach should not be available for sexual pleasures.

As far as clothing-optional is concerned, since many of the dressed beach goers shed first their tops trying out semi-nudity, and only later take the daring step taking off their bottoms, there is a number of people on the beach with white stripes. Some are all white - (and pink) - having taken the plunge in one fell swoop.

Most of the striped specimens are cottontails of various configurations according to the style of bikini bottoms in vogue.

Although the beach access property has been in the hands of Freddy's family for generations, it is only in the last twenty years that Freddy has gradually constructed and expanded the amenities adjoining the beach. Before that, only handfuls of tourists would use the beach. The Greek Orthodox church also gave the nude beach goers a bad time, bringing in the police to make arrests.

Following a visit by then prime minister Karamanlis in his yacht to the Paradise Beach Bay, a subsequent meeting of Freddy with the archbishop of Greece, and also a meeting with an official in the interior ministry in charge of the national police, and a final visit by the local superintendent of police to Paradise Beach, the persecution and hassle have ceased entirely. Since 1976 there has been peach and quiet and no interference from the outside.

Besides the restaurant, two snack- bars, a bar, hotel, rental bungalows, and large camping grounds, Freddy has also installed a mini-market.

The restaurant itself is a first-rate operation and has more food options on command than many downtown eating places.

You find salads of all kinds, hot dishes for lunch and dinner, desserts of a variety to make your mouth water, and all kinds of liquid refreshments.

Camping costs just over two dollars a night. A bungalow for two is almost $8.00. One can really have an inexpensive vacation in this Greek Garden of Eden. For accommodations, write Paradise Camping, 84600 Mykonos, Greece.

Snorkeling, spear fishing and scuba diving, is also available. For an experience beyond the normal beach life of sunbathing, splashing in the shallow water, and snacking at the restaurant, try the unparalleled world beneath the surface.

Freddy spends much money to keep the beach goers happy. Besides providing clean and fully functioning facilities, he throws parties ever so often, music and dancing every night, and full-moon masquerade balls every four weeks. A band provides music, and prizes are given for the five best costumes.

If you go downtown for shopping, sightseeing, and dining early evening, you will find plenty of tourist bargains like handmade lace, rugs, clothes, pottery, and souvenirs.

Many good restaurants offer seafood, steak, lamb and other dishes along with the ubiquitous Greek salad. Both Greek and imported wines and liquor is on hand in all restaurants and bars.

With 4500 residents on Mykonos, and 20,000 plus tourists as a floating constant addition during the season, it becomes crowded during July and August. For better bargains in goods and services it is therefore advisable to come here in June or September, the shoulder seasons. With five clothing-- optional beaches on the island, and with Paradise Beach being the biggest, the best, and the most comprehensively equipped as well as easily accessible, it becomes a natural choice. You will agree with the assessment when you sit at the bar in Paradise Beach, get a good drink from Angelo the bartender and listen to the music.

In favour of naturism are all the principals, the mayor, the manager, and the business community (even on the harbour beach itself, women sunbathe topless); I met the Chief of Police for the Cyclades Islands, and also he is in favour of the publicity this article is going to evoke for the island. With a slick invitation to Paradise like that, who are we naturists to say no!

CLUB NEWS

BAY OF PLENTY SUN CLUB

We have been rather remiss in contributing to this column recently, but the newly formed committee is now recharged with enthusiasm for the coming year and this is the first of what we hope will be regular reports.

After the official opening of our new clubhouse by the National President last December, our working bees slowed to a more leisurely pace which was well deserved by the members who had given so much of their time to the building project. However, we plodded along through the winter months slowly getting to grips with the outstanding jobs. Just before Christmas the children's party was enjoyed by young and old alike; Santa arrived on the back of a motor bike, scattering blues in his wake, to distribute the presents.

In January, six of our members joined the Free Beach Group weekend at Ngatuhoa Lodge in the Kaimai Ranges outside Tauranga, a fabulous fun time in a beautiful setting and well worth the hassle of negotiating the bends, boulders, gravel and potholes of the steep access road.

The Supporters Club and Free Beach have also organised monthly nude bathing in local Tauranga hot pools to which all are invited, even the general public and the fostering of good relations between these various naturist groups is surely to be encouraged and of benefit to the movement as a whole.

In June this year we appointed a couple to act as caretakers and they are now cosily settled into their mobile home just inside the entrance gate. The improvements and advantages resulting from this have been tremendous and, with the help of their Alsatian dog, several potential intruders have been thwarted in their attempts. We have been very fortunate to find such a wonderfully industrious and willing pair and much of the worry felt by members with the regard to the vulnerability of previously unattended grounds has been alleviated by their presence.

The first meeting of our new committee had 100% attendance and we are all ready with renewed determination to tackle the job of keeping the club running smoothly and finishing off the work still to be done on the new building and facilities. We are trying to encourage the use of the clubhouse and amenities throughout the year and to this end we hope to acquire a wood- burning stove for the colder months. By holding our working bees and committee meetings on the same weekend and endeavouring to arrange a different type of social event for the evening each time, people may feel more inclined to spend the whole weekend at the club.

A fund is being set up to purchase equipment for the children's play area and our first objective is a trampoline. The teenagers have not been forgotten as one of our committee has offered to motivate and assist them to establish an adventure/obstacle course, perhaps a flying fox and to improve the tracks through the bush areas.

We also decided to install more power boxes and by Christmas we should have electric link-up available for an increased number of our own members who wish to bring their camping vehicles to club weekends or for longer holiday periods, as well as for visitors from other clubs, to whom we extend a warm welcome. We look forward to seeing some of you on your way home from the National Rally and feel sure a detour via the Bay of Plenty would prove worthwhile.

SUPPORTER GROUP

The Supporter Group is enjoying a buoyant period, with many enquiries and most of these, subsequently, becoming new members. Letters received have shown a sincere interest in our movement which is most encouraging.

High postage charges are presenting difficulties. Postage of the September magazine required an extra twenty cents for the traditional rolled article.

As the "Naturist" is the central link of communication between members, postage cost is quite a concern in our operation. Our members in the U.S.A., Australia and Singapore received their magazines a mere twenty cents more in postage than our Kiwi supporters.

The English nudist video, "Educating Julie' has been well received by many of our membership; it has been sent to 23 supporter homes this year and has been viewed by 79 people.

Over recent months local supporters, together with Free Beach and some sun club members, have got together in nude swim nights at the local hot pools. Some of our people travelled up to 100km to come to Tauranga for these social events. A number of folk from the general public were welcomed into the friendly atmosphere of our evenings.

We are looking forward to summer. It will be great to get to the beach and shed clothes, economic woes and enjoy the sea, sun and sand; at least they are free!

ROTOTA SUN CLUB

At our A.G.M. this year we changed our financial year to 30th April with the A.G.M. to be set in June; this is to provide a cash flow over the winter period (the bills still have to be paid) also to allow the committee time to plan events well in advance of the busy season.

We reaffirmed that the Rotota Sun Club is a nudist club and that the grounds will not be made available to any person or persons which could give rise to a clothing optional situation.

The grounds are looking a picture with all the spring growth and the grass neatly trimmed. We anticipate many visitors over the holiday season, everyone is very welcome. To quote from our President's report to the A.G.M., "The Rotota Sun Club is unique in New Zealand and possibly the world.

The lake, bush, thermal area and basic camping bring us closer to nature than most other clubs. Our visitors are attracted by this and we members are richer and healthier for it' See you soon.

WANGANUI SUN CLUB

The 1988 year has not been the best on record for us at Wanganui Sun Club. We had the worst flood the grounds has ever had and two burglaries, that saw everything that wasn't nailed down stolen. You could excuse us from being just a little bit depressed about the way life was treating us at present. Not a bit of it, the new summer season brings lots of new optimism about the future.

A couple of young enthusiastic types like Robin and Brian soon sorted the aftermath of the flood out with heaps of hard work and a rotary hoe. The grounds now look better than they ever did.

The committee this year is going to run another of our famous Hangi's, we have the chiller booked, the hangi man booked and the weather booked. Its now up to you guys to have the weekend of February 4th - 6th booked to come to the best Hangi Weekend yet. We had 120 at the last one let's do better than that this time.

We are aiming at having our "charming", "equalizing" grass miniten courts replaced by a concrete one. It's less mowing, marking and much easier to clean up after a flood and best of all the thieves can't pinch it.

Watch this space next magazine for more news of our hangi and to see what progress we have made on our new court.

FREE BEACH GROUP

At our recent AGM we held a Photo Competition, providing a highlight for the meeting, and encouraging people to attend. Members judged the photographs they like best, and predictably, three big, glossy prints won the prizes.

The competition attracted 21 entries, all of our own members snapped at the beach, or at Ngatuhoa. We certainly have some keen and competent photographers in our midst. A selection of the photographs will be used for illustrating our Beach List.

We are planning another photo competition for next year, with sections for colour and black and white photographs, and sketches and paintings. We hope to have a total of $150 in prize money. The competition is open to Free Beach Group members only.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Sir,

I have been a subscriber to the N.Z. Naturist since 1983, and have contributed photographs, articles, and letters to the editor since June 1985. This year alone you have published three of my articles, one letter to the editor, and six of my photographs. In the last issue, September 1988, I supplied an article on Clothes Optional Living, and a colour photograph (p.12), which was published without credit. After the last Rally I supplied 16 black and white photographs which were personally selected and ordered by you, of which you have published only four. These contributions have not been made without an expenditure of time and money, but I considered it all to be in a good cause.

Imagine my surprise and anger, sir, when I opened my September Naturist and found two whole pages devoted to a bitter attack on me by one of your editorial staff. What have I done to deserve this? On more careful reading of Gemini's article I discovered that the "reasons" he gives for the attack do not bear much resemblance to the truth, so I trust you will allow me to acquaint your readers with the facts.

It is true that I have contributed articles and photographs to the Australian Sun and Health magazine. I have been doing so since June 1987, before it was on sale in N.Z. I have supplied colour photographs to AS&H because their editor requested them, in the same way that I supplied black and white photographs to the N.Z. Naturist because you specifically requested them. In fact, it was more trouble to make the black and white prints from the colour negatives than it would have been to make colour prints. I have contributed more articles to your magazine this year than any other contributor. Is this the way I have "deliberately tried to undermine the sales of NZN in an endeavour to bring about its downfall"?

Your "Gemini" is not strong on logic. In the second column on pg.2 he states "NZ sales of NZN were hardly affected at all' But on pg.3 he changes to "Ever since the introduction of ASH, NZN has been fighting for survival." Which is correct?

Readers might not have realised that NZN is normally published one whole month before AS&H, and so similar articles and photographs published in both will appear in NZN first and NZN will be out before the equivalent AS&H arrives in NZ.

What happened about the Roman Games article was unfortunate in that the March 88 NZN was very late coming out, (obviously not my fault), and so the article in the April-June AS&H, written by me, appeared before the NZN article written by Norm Wilkinson. You had justification for being disappointed about this, but not for being angry and vindictive.

Finally, sir, may I suggest that we nudists have much more in common than we have in differences, that we have enough enemies outside the movement without looking for imaginary "traitors" within, and that we would be better to present a unified front to the public through our magazine. If we do have differences of opinion among ourselves, why debate them in public? Your correspondent, Gemini, did a disservice to our movement with his unwarranted attack on my loyalty. He also offended me considerably, and under the circumstances, an apology might be in order.

Doug Ball
New Plymouth

There appears to be a misunderstanding on the effect of AS&H sales and the Naturist. Doug is correct that in N.Z. the Naturist does come out before AS&H but in Australia, because of shipping and distribution delays we arrive on the shelf at exactly the same time. Also there is some confusion over the colour and Black & White photos. We did ask Doug for colour prints for our March issue but that issue marked another change in our publication with the reproduction of colour photos from prints (previously it was only done from transparencies). Doug apparently did not realise the significance of our request.

When we are publishing a magazine like the NZN we are always looking for new ideas, new ways of presenting features an along the way pushing the editorial boundaries to their limits.

Unfortunately in the last edition of the NZN we crossed the boundary and for that we apologise to Doug Ball. - Editor.

Dear Editor,

Permit me to introduce myself as the promoter of nudism/naturism in this part of India.

Naturism in India appears to be a relatively new concept, but still there are some sun-worshippers. Here, some like-minded families have come together and are occasionally enjoying the bliss of naturism, of course indoors only.

I have been collecting details from several national and international naturist associations, federations etc. INF - International Naturist Federation, Belgium have sent me your address stating that you are publishing a magazine and some other literature of naturist interest.

Let me clarify that we are still "amateurs" and are still finding out about the legal implications of forming an association or club. As such we are not yet in a position to send subscription to your magazine. But, once we are properly organised, we shall certainly patronise your publications. Till then, please, keep my address on your mailing list, to keep our group abreast of the naturist developments.

I am herewith sending the Greetings and best wishes of my fellow naturists to all your readers/members.

Naturally yours,

Dear Editor,

Firstly, let me congratulate you on producing a great magazine, the photos are always top class and you feature many interesting articles. I would like to share my first experience of the nudist life-style.

Just into the New Year a friend of mine, who is a 'dee-jay', was asked to run a disco at A.O.H.C., another friend and I always help out with the disco and when we were told where our next job was to be we were very surprised. We arrived late in the afternoon on a beautifully fine day and there were plenty of brown naked bodies all around. We set up our gear and Keith started playing the music. As darkness fell more and more people came into the disco area. I can't say I've ever met so many friendly, genuine people in my entire life. I must mention two women from a Palmerston North Club who were very helpful and friendly.

[Cont...]

[Cont...]

One of these women was extremely encouraging towards the nudist lifestyle and I'll always be grateful for the advice she gave - and she sure could dance! After the disco someone yelled "All in the pool" to which I forced myself to respond. After what seemed an eternity off came my clothes and in I went. What a discovery - what a joy - what a freedom, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was one of the last out! I was then taken and shown around the club grounds by a very friendly elderly couple, until finally it was time to reluctantly get dressed and go home.

A.O.H.C. I thank you for your hospitality and your friendliness and for showing me how nudism is for 'any and all' age groups. To any people thinking of taking up the natural life, don't hesitate - it's great. I would love to join but being a single male I may have to wait until 'Miss Right' comes along - watch me then.

Yours naturally
Sun-lover

NUDISTS, BE(a)WARE!

At our local Sun Club last year we had an invitation weekend, and had visitors from several other clubs there. It was a superb weekend, and everyone had a grand time. One member from the Bay of Plenty club wanted to take a group photo, for his own use only of course, (and a copy promised for our club photograph album). Some members declined, but a few of us decided there was no harm in it, and duly had ourselves portrayed against the delightful background of native bush.

But then, over a year later, imagine my astonishment and consternation when a friend said "That was a neat photo of you in the Naturist"! And here was me, so sure the photographer was telling the truth - how naive could I be? Also, I was sure that written consent had to be obtained from subjects before photos could be published - again I am proved wrong!! Well, at least now we won't have to worry about a copy for our club album - we can always cut it out of the magazine!

Can I sue him? Probably not, (though I could certainly use the money)!

Will it affect my job? It could well do, but I sincerely hope not!

What CAN I do? Learn from experience I guess, as I always seem to have to do, - and to repeat these words of caution Nudists, be(a)ware of the cameraman!

Judi

While we take every precaution, that can practically be taken, to check consent for photos before publishing them, we do unfortunately have photos that have slipped through and have been published by mistake. Our apologies to Judi for any embarrassment we caused her, it certainly was never our intention. We sincerely hope that it hasn't affected her employment situation or her feelings for the Naturist.

THE NETWORK BED & BREAKFAST
DIRECTORY

KIB Communications announced today it is in the process of compiling listings for the eleventh edition of its very successful Network Bed & Breakfast Directory for nudists.

The B&B Directory was created and published as a result of requests by travelling nudists around the world as well as those nudists who wishes to meet and host other nudists in their homes for a clearing-house publication listing private accommodations geared to the nudists lifestyle.

The B&B Directory currently contains listings in 10 countries. The typical B&B host is a nudist individual or family who rents out a room in their home to travelling nudists, although there are several professional B&B hosts listed, particularly in the Hawaiian Islands.

KIB President and Directory creator, Veal Johnson, said, "The eleventh edition of the Directory will be the most complete ever.

We are adding listings for permanent apartments and rooms to rent on a monthly basis as well as vacation home exchanges. There is a vast, focused market of nudists on the move out there which is crying for accommodations suited to our lifestyle and we feel the Network Bed & Breakfast Directory helps to meet that need. We invite and encourage all nudists everywhere to list. A listing in any section of the Directory is FREE to any nudist individual."

Since the Directory is going through a complete revision, even current listers are being asked to resubmit their listings. To list send the following information:

Your name, address, telephone no. (required on all listings), type of accommodations you are offering, meals offered, any restrictions, major attractions nearby, nearest nudist facility or nude beach, and which section you wish to list in (Bed & Breakfast, Apartments or Vacation Home Exchange).

Listings are limited to five lines each.

SUNSHINE A RAY OF CANCER HOPE

The major skin cancer threat to New Zealand may prove to be a lifesaver from other forms of the disease.

Excessive sunlight and the ultraviolet rays it produces have long been regarded as the principal cause of skin cancer.

But US research has shown regular exposure to some sunlight could protect people against cancer of the bowel and breast.

A University of California researcher claimed about 10 minutes of sunshine a day could help guard against the two cancers.

However, the Californian researchers have cautioned that to reap the benefits of their findings, people have to be exposed to the right type of sunlight.

They say city dwellers might be at a disadvantage because the beneficial sunshine can be filtered out by pollutant sulphur dioxide.

The key to the theory is vitamin D, which is obtained either through certain foods or from the sun's ultraviolet light.

"What we are showing is that cancers of the colon and breast may be vitamin D deficiency diseases in adults," one of the scientists said.

The researchers said if people could not get enough vitamin D through sunlight they should obtain it through foods such as milk.

New Zealanders should treat the US research cautiously, said a cancer spokesman. New Zealand sunlight was so strong it would penetrate the veil of pollution which hung over big cities.
