New Zealand Nudist Federation
- t o w a r d s t h e n e w m i l l e n n i u m
1997 has been somewhat of a mixed bag for the New Zealand Nudist Federation Officers and looking back one might loosely use the term housekeeping to describe what continues to be a general tidying up of NZNF affairs. For me personally, the role of PRO of my own club at "Pineglades" (yes, I am referred to by my alter ego Camp Mother there as well), has been interspersed with recapping some of my adventures in these pages, having my ear constantly adhered to the telephone in the evenings and oh yes, a four-day secretarial job as well. Thank goodness for the Thursday Geriatrics Miniten at Pineglades! To make life a little easier I have now subscribed to the Internet and am taking a course in photo-journalism, in anticipation of reporting worldwide. No longer will folk in other countries think there is only one nudist in New Zealand as I heard some lark jokingly refer to the double feature in the last issue of NZ Naturist. Other interesting ingredients include the mine of information made available to me in publications from other countries and most importantly - a good team. The NZNF Officers line-up this year features some new faces with a vast range of expertise and experience among them all. A number of welcome letters and phone calls have been received during the past months, with a number of queries ranging from "how to deal with the encroachment of residential areas surrounding club grounds" to the "reluctance of some landed clubs to recognise fully, members from our non-landed affiliated clubs". My answer to the first is contained in many of my own articles and that of many other Federation Presidents - become part of the mainstream community, don't hide behind locked gates and high fences. Do what Waikato is doing - invite the neighbours, all of them! |
The second question was raised at the members meeting after the Rotota Campout and an interesting debate ensued resulting in a greater understanding from both parties. Personally, I would have thought that the lack of material assets would be the last thing to establish the character of a visiting nudist and certainly not reason enough to inflate their fee. Back to the housekeeping. One of the main items on the completed section of the "to-do" list is the NZNF Investigation Survey. This should now be well and truly distributed and in fact returned to North Island Vice President Mike Kelly for analysis, with Club Delegates now taking on more responsibility in ensuring these are returned on time. Mike, and South Island Vice President Christine Turner, together with Club Delegates will also be required to take on a greater role in receiving and sharing information from the NZNF with club committees. Taking up the Secretary's reins this year is Pamla Kelly and like many of us, is freely available for you to communicate with and request information via phone, snail and email. Full address details at the back of this and all issues of NZ Naturist. Pam has been around in nudist circles for many years and is also juggling her role as Rotota Sun Club Secretary until someone rescues her. The longest currently serving member of the Federation is Ian Miller as Treasurer and when he viewed the trimmed budget the Council passed at the last meeting he breathed a sigh of relief. Among the many comments directed to me in conversation over the past few months regarding the role of NZNF is the statement that the Federation should be doing more promotion for the clubs. Given the rather lean budget available, our new PRO Chester Holmes has resolved to take that responsibility firmly in his stride. |
The data base of freebie newspaper and radio advertising, together with a Video Library compiled by Supporter Member Group Secretary, are two of a number of initiatives formulated last year that Chester will oversee. However it would also seem to me that information sharing is the name of the game and one has only to read other club newsletter to see what works and brings in new members. Ken Mercer as our new Trophy Secretary is fair "champing at the bit" and his sporting knowledge and sheer enthusiasm will no doubt be a huge advantage in completing the long overdue changes in the sports handbook. Ken is also PRO for Wellington Sun Club and keen to implement any initiatives the Federation Officers recommend. Les Olsen as Editor of NZ Naturist together with Laurel Olsen as Business Manager complete the team and have appreciated the wide variety of articles, particularly the ones with local content. Production numbers have increased and perhaps the greatest compliment I can pass on is a comment from an English couple, now members of Canterbury Sun Club, who did their research in this magazine 18 months prior to coming to New Zealand to live. This was made possible by reading articles about the nudist lifestyle in and around New Zealand. After three weeks away with not a cloud in the sky during that period, attending the Rotota Campout and visiting other clubs, I had the opportunity to meet an even greater number of wonderful people, professional, retired, some who just like travelling around, families and singles including several children. My nudist lifestyle has become richer from them allowing me to become part of their lives and from this experience I shall continue to lead by example and 'shout it from the rooftops". Kay Hannam, President NZNF |

In November 1997 the national press gave quite a bit of coverage to a statement by a Cancer Society representative which indicated that there had been a very significant increase in the incidence of sunburn in New Zealand. One in four adults who are outdoor at the weekends now end up with sunburn - there are about 20,000 new cases of skin cancer per year of which 1600 (8%) are cases of melanoma. Deaths from melanoma have risen to 190 per year. These are not very comfortable statistics and come from a survey of about 1200 people. The New Zealand Nudist Federation has for some time wanted to establish the incidence of skin cancer amongst New Zealand nudists and compare this with figures available for the country as a whole. In 1996, an NZNF Sun Safety survey of 310 nudist club members was conducted. These represented about 15% of currently organised nudists. By any standards this was a very thorough survey. Here are some of the facts which the NZNF survey uncovered: • 60% of respondents were male and 40% female. This fairly accurately mirrored the prevailing balance in club members. • Three quarters of those surveyed were aged 40 or above. Two thirds were over 50 years of age. • More than 80% of those surveyed had sunbathed in the nude for 5 years or more. Three quarters had practiced nude sunbathing for over 10 years. • Half of the respondents reported being sunburned once or twice a year. A third had only been sunburned as a child. |
![]() |
|||
• Over 60% of those surveyed used a sunscreen of SPF12 or higher. • About 78% reported wearing a hat whilst in the sun. 28% wore a T-shirt and 22% wore shorts in the sun. • The length of sunbathing sessions was fairly evenly spread between 10 minutes and 4 hours. A quarter of respondents reported sessions of over two hours. Skin Problems Reported Just over 36% of the nudists surveyed reported having suspect skin spots either treated or removed. Of these only three (under 1% of those surveyed) reported having a serious case requiring treatment or removal. Of the serious cases (none of whom died as a result of melanoma): |
• All were over 50 years of age and two thirds had sunbathed in the nude for over 10 years. • Two thirds used a sunscreen of SPF12 or higher. • Sunbathing sessions were between 20 and 90 minutes. For those with non-serious skin problems the figures for age, years of nude sunbathing, use of sunscreen, clothes worn in the sun etc. were all very comparable to the figures for the survey as a whole. Only one respondent reported a non-serious case of a skin problem on the buttocks/genitals - all the remainder occurred on the head/neck, hands, back, chest/breast or on the leg or foot, i.e. areas regularly exposed by non-nudists also. |

Conclusions It seems fair to conclude that the incidence of sun related skin problems is not significantly worse amongst nudists than among the general population of New Zealand. However this is no excuse for being careless about Sun Safety - to be careless is to court danger. We can only repeat the wise advice given by Kevin Sampson in his 1989 article published in the NZ Naturist: |
• Avoid the sun in the hottest part of the day (if you can't, then cover up). • Use sunscreen lotions to prevent burning. • Build up a tan gradually if you want one. • Wear a hat to protect your face when out in the sun. • Help fellow nudists by mentioning that they are beginning to burn. - Compiled by Peter Holt for NZNF |

The Grand Barn
The most challenging club/resort on earth
Obviously not the biggest on earth, yet with its 250 acres of domain land, and on the way to expand even more, The Grand Barn has become the talk of everyone, wherever and whenever nudity is the main subject. What makes it so challenging and different is that The Grand Barn (TGB) is the end destination of those who are part of a Network that has grown tremendously in the last decade. The Worldwide Affiliate Network was originated by Peter Riden, current owner of TGB, and has become the response for many who feel they belong to the more open-minded section of a society that is easily recognised as being rather conservative. So, with this opening of the heart and soul of the like minded, it was evident that the next step to reach out for one another was to find a physical location to really meet in person. It's been visited by people from many parts of the world, and those who have flown or driven the extra miles, to come and experience the unique feeling of TGB, have come back again to make it their favourite place. The gigantic structure of TGB itself is quite a sight with its 220ft long two storey building and 10 storey high towers from converted silos linked with an all season glass structure to be assembled in the coming times. The size of its land and the continuous expansion it does offer, is the key element. Not only does it have the friendliest crowd, to begin with, but it has the promise of plenty to offer in the years ahead. |

No one can miss Desire Lake as it is the main targeted area for all those coming for a longer stay at TGB. From Peace Camp, on one of its shores, you'll bridge to Lovers' Island and find yourself among a multitude of indigenous plants and flowers. Or you can paddle boat to Shady Island or Rocky Island. This is Phase I. Phase II offers more of the ideal place for continuous bathing as its depth is the result of the overflow from Desire Lake. Alongside, there is plenty of opportunity for tramping and pure relaxation. The fields are enormous and the domain is quite spectacular and wild. It is a promise for the times ahead as it has already been of good use for this first decade of operation. In fact to celebrate these 10 years of operation, the season '98 will offer special features for the many to come celebrate this worthy accomplishment. The schedule of events will reflect such. |
There have been regular events taking place yearly, on the same dates, at TBG. This year will see the topics reduced to concentrate more on the year round regular feeling that is ever existent. Some targeted groups did not respond to some specific events so that it will be only logical to direct celebrations to those who have clearly responded. The fascination for TGB has been felt at once by those who were made aware of its existence. Since music has a big place for those who are behind the whole organisation, it is evident that the initial crowd to come and participate at any event were those involved in music. Concept's Week from July 1-7 has already been going on with Peter Riden and the two honourable long-time members/friends of the musical entity "Concept": Pier Heiken, drums, percussions and Robert C. Schwelb on keyboards. |
The recent visit of Robbert Broekstra, the best internationally known photographer, at TGB was an important event. To Peter's surprise, there was the presentation of the Man of the Year Award by Robbert to Peter Riden, who has contributed to the notion of Nudity being accepted by all. And it can be added that this trophy underlines Peter's ability to uncover the disguised enemies of modernism and liberalism. And if only for this reason, it makes TGB a much talked about place by many. But for all alternative positive lifestyles, including those who are "At Ease With Nudity", TGB is now the most symbolic and important place on earth. It's not only a location for relaxation, but it has become a significant place to express one's approval for freedom and respect of other civil liberties. The Grand Barn is the very echo of The Worldwide Affiliate Network and the global response tells us that TGB is rapidly growing to be the representative alternative to the conservative prudish side of society. Yes, The Grand Barn is quite special, not only with its unduplicable features but with the notion it strongly carries on with. Equal gender acceptance, children non-traumatised by societal taboos, adults respectful of others private choices, a most friendly and reachable membership and a worldwide linkage. Who could think that all of this lies behind this quiet giant in Vankleek Hill, Ontario on the Eastern side of North America. For more information you may write at the following address, but if interested to show support for the ideas expressed here, you may contemplate sending your $US10 if you live out of North America for a sample of The Affiliate or $US7, if in North America. POHUTUKAWA BAY ON CHRISTMAS DAY |
by Alan Harvey
What did you do for Christmas? Well we started the day sitting naked on a beach, sipping bubbly, watching a flaming golden ball of sun struggle through clouds gathering in the distance beyond Rakino Island. The dark clouds lay waiting for the majority of Auckland's metropolitan dwellers to gain consciousness before clothing them all in their greyness or alternatively in honour of our naked enthusiasm in greeting the day, they may have been waiting for us to finish our skinny dipping and celebratory nibbles. As we were off to Auckland to have Christmas dinner with the kids, we wanted to travel early on Christmas Day to avoid all the holiday traffic flowing north for the festivities and the traditional kiwi, summer holiday at the beach. We had decided that it would be lovely to spend Christmas morning, nostalgically, having a picnic breakfast, naked on the beach at Pohutukawa Bay. Terisha thought it would be wonderful to be there in time to see the sun rise above the horizon. I wasn't sure about rattling my bones out of bed early enough to achieve that goal. Our peaceful slumber was disturbed by the alarm clock ringing at 4.00am and we were on the road by 4.30am. There was more traffic driving north than expected but we had a really good drive from Whangarei, arriving at Long Bay just after 6am. |
We didn't make it by sunrise, however, we did enjoy panoramic views of the day dawning as re travelled south over the hills around Waiwera. We reached the Auckland Regional Park before the rangers were out of bed to open the gates and throughout the few hundred yards of extra walking, we enjoyed the play of early morning light on this empty gem of North Shore's aquatic playground. Absorbing the breathtaking views, we ambled past the beautifully restored Vaughan homestead, up over the coastal walkway, pausing to photograph signs declaring that no nudity was allowed on the track. The sun's rays played on the cliffs and beach at Granny's Bay. |
We pressed on to our destination, the lovely, clothing optional, pohutukawa-lined beach at Pohutukawa Bay. Except for the gulls and a lone tall ship anchored well out in the bay we had the whole beach, in fact the whole northern end of the Hauraki Gulf to ourselves. How privileged we are to have this expanse of tranquillity right on the doorstep of New Zealand's largest city. What a great Christmas morning we experienced. After a quick photo shoot, it was off to plunge into the sea feeling immersed in and yet part of something far greater than ourselves. |

The water was surprisingly clear and very invigorating and afterwards the hot coffee from the thermos was very welcome. In the primal, early morning solitude we cracked a bottle of bubbly to celebrate the freedom of life renewed. As it was now low tide, we returned along the shore beneath the crumbling cliffs, picking our way between fallen rocks and patches of slippery, intertidal, green slime. Awed by the tenacity with which seedling pohutukawas and nesting pigeons clung to the weather beaten cliffs above us, gazing down on the skeletons of past tenacious trees whose ground the sea had gobbled up. Our day was completed with an enjoyable Christmas dinner with family members and then the return journey to our home in Northland.

A regular bus service runs from Auckland City to the entrance of Long Bay Regional Reserve (a popular textile picnic spot with good facilities). When driving north on the Northern Motorway, the park can be accessed from the East Coast Bays off ramp or by turning right by the sports stadium at Albany. From the northern end of Long Bay it takes about 30 minutes to walk to Pohutukawa Bay. No facilities are available there, so you will have to carry in anything you may need. |

Samurai Beach Carnival
Anna Bay - New South Wales
On 16 November in conjunction with River Island Nature Retreat and Bardots Nude Village Resort, a games carnival was held on Samurai beach near Anna Bay 45kms north of Newcastle. The NSW Free Beach Association, Rosco, Great Western Nudist Club and Sydney Sun and Social Group were all in attendance with plenty of members turning up in support. The organisers were blessed with perfect weather with the temperature reaching a pleasant 28°C with a nice afternoon breeze to cool everyone off. There was a good turnout with approximately 300 people fronting up. |
The carnival started at l0am with the junior events on first. The sack race provided many spills and much laughter. The wheelbarrow race had a few more kids eating sand whilst providing the adults with some entertainment. By the time the water bucket race came around there were quite a few teams competing. The organisers did a fantastic job with all the children receiving a prize. After a leisurely lunch it was the adults turn to entertain the youngsters. First up was the tunnel ball race with competitors rolling a small plastic ball down between the rest of their teams legs. Much hilarity as the balls don't roll well on soft sand. |
By this time the number of competitors had increased so much with the three legged race being split into heats. Many adults, to the amusement of the spectators, found it hard going in the soft sand with a few tasting it, especially in the sack races. The water bucket race provided plenty of fun with competitors having to dash into the sea and try to bring as much water as possible in a very well holed bucket and fill up a two gallon pail. Now came two interesting competitions, for the men it was the best bum with over forty men entering and for the women it was the best boobs with surprisingly twenty five women entering. |

Each group judged one another and both winners were in their 30s so you don't have to be young to win. To finish off there was a sand castle competition for children with a very good rendition of a turtle winning it. At the end of the day everyone was invited back to Bardots Nude Village Resort for a swim and a spa. Special thanks must go to Colin and Katina Sell from River Island who went out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. Our very first glimpse of Rotota must hove been at least 15 years ago. From small and bare beginnings, the club has developed into a first class 'a-la-naturale' resort. Spacious grounds offer a choice of camping areas from the more formal assemblies (where members' permanent sites are located), to neat little private cubby-holes, or the wide-open spaces of the gate-end surroundings. Bush and lake scenery is spectacular, with many varied walks - some ending at beautiful little waterfalls and hot pools. Toilet and cleaning facilities are very basic, yet this is no Spartan existence - more like conducive to the simplicity of living with nature which is surely a nudist's preference. No power here, no telly, not even a satisfactory radio reception. In other words, a great place to 'get away from it all' and forget there can be an ugly side to the world... So what better side for the New Zealand Nudist Federation Inc Annual Meeting and rally-with-a-difference. |

From the moment one stepped through the gate, Rotota's welcome was friendly and well received by the 250 or so who attended. Visitors from far and near had registered, with the likes of USA, Canada, UK, Australia and Hong Kong being represented. No excuses for not becoming involved in the scheduled activities - cleverly arranged to suit the situation. Volleyball matches introduced a set of totally new rules, the game even being interrupted by the inevitable (reverse) streaker! Amusements such as Frisbee Golf, Bedrock Bowls (straight out of "The Flintstones") and as always, many water-related inventions were (dis)organised on a daily basis. With no pressure to compete, the thoroughly enjoyable 'silly' games (how do they think them up!) provided fun galore for both contenders and spectators. Thank to Ken and Judith for their efforts in this direction. Children's games always followed, the squeals of delight bearing out their obvious approval. This filled the mornings, nicely, leaving afternoons free to do one's own thing. However, so diverse was the recreation offering, the desire to laze about was often disregarded. Who could resist swimming, spa- bathing, boating, water-skiing or biscuit-riding. The highlight had to be the float-plane rides for which there was a continuous queue of customers. "Awesome!" was the description given by the first passenger to alight. So successful was the venture that the pilot returned for another session a few days later. Meanwhile, visits from the ice man, food providers and even "Mr Whippy", kept the taste-buds satisfied. Every evening featured something different to do, such as informal gatherings, cards and board games, a magnificent hangi and spit roast meal (on the house), community barbecues and a concert providing entertainment gleaned from camp talent. Graham's enthusiasm here must be applauded; it's never easy to find volunteers. |

An item of particular delight presented a special "Rotota" song composed in Country and Western style. Clever Jim! The absolute ultimate pleasure had to be the nude stroll around neighbouring Orakei-Korako's thermal wonderland. What better way to relax during a stunning late afternoon. New Year's Eve was celebrated with a great party - no "time, gentlemen" necessary of course. Rotota benefits from its own built-in disco operator, and PJ sure had everyone hopping until the wee hours. All events aside, surely the charm of the actual location had to be the high point of this particular camp- out. From the crack of dawn, a resident bellbird vied with the magpies to deliver the first song of the new day. From that point, the bellbird did his rounds of the complete camp area, flitting from tree to tree with his wake-up call. |

How much more pleasant than the often unwelcome blast of a loudspeaker at rallies past. Without radios, the sounds of birds too numerous to mention filled the air with enough music to satisfy the most discerning ear. Totally fascinating though, were the several flocks of quail, busily foraging amongst the caravans and people seemingly unafraid. We were amused when a small group preceded us on our first walk along the path to Big Waterfall - it was as though they were showing us the way. |

It was great to meet up with old and new friends and to make acquaintance with other naturists such as "Camp Mother" Kay, "Birdman" Brian and Rotota very own 'character' Gypsy, who goes nowhere without his ginger cat Tigger, Mark II. "I don't own him," says Gypsy, "he chooses to live with me." And what yarns he had to spin - Gypsy that is, not the cat! With limited facilities and the remoteness of location, the organising committee are to be congratulated on their astute forethought. It must surely have been a worry at times, yet the obvious success of the whole campout should be gratifying to those who applied the effort. Thanks everyone for presenting a superb feast of what naturism is all about. This refreshing taste of happy-go-lucky naturist life will surely have your visitors returning again and again. |

Almere Naturist Swimmarathon
Having been back to Holland to visit family and friends, I was privileged to be invited to visit the Almere Naturist Swimmarathon. The hosting club was appropriately named "The Waterlilly". This club is a naturist swimming club, who rent the heated swimming pool on a regular basis from the city of Almere. The participation was tremendous, with 400 people attending. Not everyone did swim of course, most of us where just supporters. Nevertheless there were about 20 or so teams of eight members. Every team member swims 15 minutes then has 1¾ hour rest until all team members have had a go. Since the event lasted for 12 hours, every swimmer had to swim 90 minutes in total. I am already tired if I think about it. The whole event started with a welcome by the host club. Then I had to find the Solonat Club who initially made me aware of the event, and again I got an overwhelming welcome. There is a beautiful restaurant and bar attached to the pool, so when hungry or thirsty, you could buy food and drinks close by. No need to leave the pool complex. At 7.30pm everybody was in place. The first swimmers, the supporters, the lap counters and the jury. A massage team was ready to soften up sore or overtired muscles. I did not swim and still got my massage. Was that because I was a guest? Although the night was long and tiring, it was a most enjoyable event and I hope to be there again on my next trip to Holland. Thank you Waterlilly and Solonat. Yours naturally, Peter van der Stam, Napier, NZ. |

International Naturist Federation (INF) Following publication of the notice regarding a "Youth Letter Exchange" by the INF/FNI in their Bulletin it seems that "Doris Adoma" of Ghana was a "front" for a group soliciting funds for unauthorised purposes. Naturists worldwide are asked to discontinue correspondence with this named person. This year the INF Congress is to be held at Partisanen, Southern Sweden. New Zealand will again have a representative at this event with the NZNF President - Kay Hannam attending on our behalf.
Hibiscus Coast Sun Club Inc Another year behind us and our club house is still being upgraded. Attendance at the Parakai Hot Pool swim nights has been great with continued good support of members. In addition to the regular visits made to Auckland Sun Club spa and sauna evenings, members have travelled the North Island visiting clubs throughout. Special mention is made of the hard work carried out at the Waikato Outdoor Society grounds at Matangi near Hamilton. Their new clubhouse is a great credit to their hard work. In turn we have played host to many visitors to "Kirikau" - our grounds at Orewa north of Auckland. We extend good wishes to all for 1998. Jim Peddieson
Tasman Trophy Update The Tasman Trophy has been found and is now in the care of the Secretary, Australian Nudist Federation: thank you to all those who assisted in its recovery. |
![]() Photo: Mark Goodwin Rotota Sun Club Inc Were you at the National Campout? The photos and stories in this issue of NZ Naturist should tell all! Maybe not all - Camp Mother might not like that. Two comments came through clearly: "You can have a leisurely breakfast and talk with your neighbours," and "People have been seen sitting under trees reading books." You don't do that at rallies do you - Rotota exudes that leisurely pace. Our thanks to all who came and enjoyed the National Campout. What a great summer at Rotota. Graham MacGregor |
Auckland Outdoor Health Club Inc. A number of members attended the National Campout at Rotota Sun Club and had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. The nude walk through the thermal wonderland of Orakei-Karako in the late afternoon following its public closure was invigorating in the cool conditions prevailing at the time. There was plenty of opportunities provided by the organisers to do something different and water activities such as water skiing, biscuit riding (an inflatable tube designed for towing behind a power boat), jet boat rides, float plane rides or just lazing in the hot stream and waterfall gave everyone as much activity as they wanted. The weather was kind throughout the holiday which added greatly to everyone's enjoyment. Club activities have continued with our annual petanque championship being well attended and eventually won by our German! Kiwis Helga and Erich. We invite interested persons to seek membership - details of which are with our advertisement elsewhere in this magazine. Les Olsen

Auckland Sun Club Inc Auckland Sun Club hopes all Southern Hemisphere readers are enjoying a good summer and that northern readers won't have to bear wintry temperatures much longer! Repeat visitations by overseas naturists to our shores seems to be the "in" thing this summer. First it was our Antwerp friends. Now we have word from Israel. A fax from 1996 visitors, Adi and Torit Niv, declares that they would like to visit us again. Initial arrangements suggest they'll be here for the first two to three weeks of April. Readers may recollect that this couple are working towards setting up an official naturist organisation in their country. Early in December, a Listener journalist attended the club during one of our barbecue functions. |
Keep a lookout for the resulting article. View the architectural and engineering wonder and enjoy the functionality of a 7.3m diameter geodesic dome erected by a member at the club grounds. Now that Peter's National Secretaryship term has ended and Pamla Kelly's assumed the mantle, he's begun work in earnest compiling an official New Zealand clothes free recreation guide. Part of this publication will consist of comprehensive information about camping, accommodation and recreational opportunities throughout the country, much needed since the TNC compiled "Camping Directory" became increasingly out of date. The guide's first edition is expected to be available later this year in time for the next summer holidays. |
Individuals and organisations are encouraged to make submissions for inclusion in it. Please direct these to "Guide to NZ Naturally", PO Box 74257, Market Road PO, Auckland 1005, New Zealand. Letters to the Editor |
Campout Reflections Lying back relaxing and lapping up the sun, it was easy to doze off to the murmuring of happy campers, the joyful laughter of children, the constant chirp of cicadas and an endless variety of birdsong. Add the everyday sounds of canvas doorways being zipped, the clicking of chilly-bin lids and the smells of camp cooking, and all this could give enormous inspiration to the budding scribe. Who knows, the continued following of this easy-going, naturally-fulfiled lifestyle may someday find me saying: "I feel another book coming on..." ... Just as in the mid-80s a stint as a vet's nurse influenced this very remark into being. Experiencing the privilege of working amongst animals provided inspiration indeed - from happiness to pathos, contentment to downright panic, doom to glee; it was the sheer unexpectedness of the job that gave me the stimulus to share the encounters with others. And so, my first book, "Carry On Vet" emerged and was published a few years back. Its favourable success sparked off the desire to again put pen to paper and thus "STAND BY VET" tran- spired. Available now in bookshop, it can also be purchased direct from The Rimu Publishing Co Ltd, 49 Casey Ave., Fairfield, Hamilton, price: $19.50. Shirley Morton |

The Editor Greetings, I am an Australian-male who on occasions goes to a convenient "Free Beach" - depending if the weather is hot or cold. Here in Australia, the local naturist magazine Australian Sun and Health carries private advertisements for companionship. That is "male would like to meet female" and vice versa. Have you considered a section in your NZ Naturist magazine where people can advertise on a private basis for like-minded opposite sex companions? This will boost your advertising revenue and possibly your readership numbers. In Australia there are more males than females in the 18 to 60 age group, however I do not know about the male to female statistics in NZ. From my personal point of view, I would like to meet a N.Z. female who is reasonably fit and who enjoys going to "free-beaches" so we can form a long-term partnership here in Australia and perhaps later in NZ. Regards G.J. Fox, PO Box 204, Cammeray, NSW 2062, Australia. |
