NZNF Review With the advent of the new millennium, the New Zealand Naturist Federation has set in train a review of the INF membership card scheme as applied to our members locally and also a review of the Supporters Membership scheme. Membership Card The current membership card scheme requires that every affiliated club member pays to the NZNF an amount which is in turn forwarded to the International Naturist Federation INF/FNI. As New Zealand and indeed Australia are so far from the naturist activity of Europe and our call upon the resources of the INF infrequent, we are required to pay a somewhat lesser fee than our European contemporaries. It is important that we are seen as belonging to this worldwide organisation and with the regular attendance of the New Zealand delegate at the International Congress every two years, we are seen to be active participants in the development of naturist activity worldwide. Whilst we are unable to take part in the sporting and camping programmes promoted by the INF in Europe, we here in Australasia have developed our own unique series of sports raffles, beach days and other inter-club social gatherings which are the envy of many of the overseas visitors to our shores. Regular correspondence is held with the INF officials and the personal contact so made, is invaluable in maintaining an effective relationship with the international body. The review is to establish the effectiveness of the present system of issuing membership cards through club Secretaries or whether some form of centralised control should be established. The present system of issue by club Secretaries would seem to be the most cost efficient system and should be retained albeit with some refinements. |

The Supporter Members scheme was introduced in 1970 to provide opportunities for those persons who lived in remote communities or through personal circumstances were unable to participate actively in the membership of an established club. Such persons by belonging as a supporter could then have limited opportunity to take part in NZNF rallies and/or visit naturist clubs on request. As vetting of individuals was discontinued some years ago and whilst there has not been any embarrassing situations recorded to date within this grouping, it was felt prudent to review the present joining procedures and the ongoing participation of the group within the NZNF. Many people have been actively involved with the Supporters Group over the years and a large number have joined naturist clubs as their circumstances have changed to allow them the opportunity to fully participate. The Supporters Group have proved themselves to be worthy of continued participation and whether the system is refined on a regional basis as has been suggested or will continue as a single grouping as at present will be decided once the review is completed later this year. Lets' hope it continues in it's present format under the guidance of a single NZNF official. Les Olsen - Editor |
Nudity builds Self Confidence As any normal teenage girl could be, I was a little apprehensive about baring my seemingly freakish body to anyone other than my mirror, but, as I came to accept myself more, I realised that nudity is a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, in society's eyes, naked bodies are meant to be kept under wraps. It was a gorgeous hot day and I was taking advantage of the weekend sun, so I stripped off and sunbathed naked in my fenced-in backyard. Not half an hour into my sun-seeking, there was a knock at the front door. Being the only one home, I wrapped a towel around my naked self and answered the door. It was two cops, who said that a neighbour of mine had called and complained that I was guilty of indecent exposure - my natural sunbathing. It shocks me to know that I cannot express the confidence I have in myself, by taking my clothes off in my backyard. There are authority figures telling young people not to be ashamed of who they are. Well, this is who I am, so why can't I be me? People need to understand that they get one body only. If they can't be happy with it, their overall confidence will be down. My body is not perfect, but who's to say it's not beautiful? I am proud of everything I have. When I was hospitalised with anorexia last year, I gained 20kg and as a result of that also gained stretch-marks. I love them - they're like a trophy of my health. It's the same thing with cellulite and extra curves. In the old days, a little bit of extra skin meant that you could afford a lot of food. Why does it now seem to be a crime? Nudity is one of the biggest self-esteem-raising, confidence-building, natural activities, so why has it been labelled wrong? I have just one message to everyone out there: Love yourself, love your body, express that love!

Doug Cousins
honoured
At the Millennium Rally 2000, held at the Wellington Sun Club during the New Year, the New Zealand Naturist Federation honoured Doug Cousins, as the inaugural member of their Roll of Honour. This, in recognition of his many years of devoted service to the naturist movement in New Zealand. Doug - the son of New Zealand's naturist pioneer - joined the Wellington Sun and Health Club as a youth on the Club's formation in 1950, with his parents Perc and Phil who were responsible for starting the Wellington Club and for the development of nude recreation in this country. Naturist holidays were always part of family life around the Wellington and Wairarapa Regions, providing Doug the opportunity for fishing and shooting. His first recorded appointments with the New Zealand Sunbathing Association (as the NZ Naturist Federation was then called), was that of Business Manager of the NZ Naturist Review at the 3rd NZSA meeting of 1960, held at Wanganui and then as Treasurer in 1961. Prior to these formal appointments, Doug had acted as an official photographer since the first Rally in 1953 and has maintained a long association with the NZ Naturist since that time. In 1964, he was appointed Secretary, along with his other two roles and held the Secretaryship until 1971. Doug's working life started with 15 months in the office of a Public Accountant, followed by 16 years in the Audit Office and finally 24 years in Government Life Assurance Office. With his audit experience, he acted as the Hon. Auditor for the Federation for many years, along with his life membership as Vice-President of Wellington Sun Club. He has also been associated with the Geyserland Leisure Park Trust, which originally purchased the property which is now Rotota Sun Club and is a trustee of the "Perc Cousins Trust", a naturist trust which provides financial assistance to Clubs to develop their properties. Doug has served as a leader in Scouting for 43 years, in spite of being deaf and has managed the Scout Association Stamp Collection for many years and attended many Jamborees, both in New Zealand and overseas. His other sporting interest is Indoor Bowls and he has been successful in this sport in his local community of Hataitai and also at NZNF Rallies in 1986, '89, '91 and 1997. |
Doug's support and devotion to nude recreation has continued throughout the years and his photos and writing have been published on many occasions in the NZ Naturist. His knowledge of the naturist movement is far-reaching and he has set an example to all of us for his diligence and exemplary record of attendance at all naturist rallies and events. His recognition as the inaugural member of the NZNF Roll of Honour is well deserved. Les Olsen Editor

Both Annie and her husband must have been short by the way, because, in the space of my short stay there, I hit my head on the doorway three times! The next three days I was really pleased with my progress - on and off tracks. I enjoyed it - and the weather. The first day I went via Broken Bridge (apparently mended by DOC), to Upper Junction, onto the Tablelands, from the other direction. I camped outside, with a view of Mt Arthur framed in my tent doorway and was asleep by about 7:00pm. Most of my life I have looked at the 'Western Ranges' from Nelson. It is much more interesting going into them and seeing them from the inside, as it were. I awoke and left early and was on the top of some knob or other, wearing my balaclava to protect my ears from the strong winds, when the sun rose just after 7:00am. I took its photo. There were also some wonderful views down to the Leslie Valley and the Karamea filled with low-lying mist. I travelled on via Lake Peel, where I had a drink of water from the outlet and then around to the Cobb Ridge, where the wind was again strong for a while, blowing me sideways. The views were superb, particularly looking up. the Cobb Valley and down at the Cobb Reservoir. After spending 3 hours travelling along the ridge I reached the bullock track and made. my way down to Broken Bridge for a second time, after travelling in a big circle. I washed in the river, camped, had a feed and started writing this. The last day in the Kahurangi National Park also went well. The track was almost all in bush to Flora Hut, but on the way I stopped at Gridiron Hut to talk to two possum trappers. They were just on their way out after 10 days in there. I reached Flora Hut and had a leisurely hour's lunch, after which a DOC vehicle passed me and very kindly took me all the way to Motueka! Stephen Conn |

In my younger days, I enjoyed the freedom of 5 years tramping around the New Zealand countryside nonstop. Much of it was in the bush and the mountains, and I spent weeks at a time there, moving around by myself, enjoying the excitement and adventure and freedom of it all. Now, I feel like an old man, but after so many years away from the bush I have managed to make a few trips out. I could also be described as being in my second childhood, although I don't think I ever properly left the first, and I like to take my clothes off occasionally when I am there. About 3 years ago, I walked from my home in Nelson, all the way up the Dun Mountain walkway, past Copper mine Saddle, to the top of Dun Mountain, where there is an old two-man hut. It is hardly ever used, and it was a good job I carried my water for the night up the last 200 metres, because the only water at the hut was stagnant, in two buckets and full of vegetation. |
However, the views looking over the Pelorous Valley to the mountains of the Richmond Ranges are superb. I took a number of photos. I came back to Nelson via the lightly frozen Dew Lakes and the Rushpools, managing to get lost in thick bush for about an hour on the way. I am obviously old, when I lose myself in the bush - and find the trip most exciting! Another trip I went on, was to the Mount Arthur Tablelands. It was great to be able to make a mad whirlwind visit of about 4 days after 23 years away. I went in via Asbestos Cottage and 'The Grand Scenic Track'. As I lay resting beside a stream, I was woken by a bush robin hopping over me whilst I was having a snooze. I also passed the remains of the 100 year old asbestos mine, which has left an interesting scar on the landscape. At Asbestos Cottage, I met a lady by the name of Annie - who had lived there for 47 years without coming out of the bush. She had her husband to carry her supplies in for her though and to keep her happy. |

Queensland Winter
Lisa & Denis Moynihan
During the winter of 1999, we decided it was time for a relaxing, warm break and headed for Brisbane. Upon being greeted at the airport with our rent car (A$30 a day for a large car), we headed to the outskirts of the city for our first night with relations. We have previously decided to pre-book our accommodation, but not spend each day rushing about sightseeing, as with 3 children we normally return home exhausted! So, we just took each day as it came. The following day we headed to Sunshine Families Nudist Club Resort, which is situated about 100km west of Brisbane. We spent a few nights here - making the most of the 89 acres of bush walks, complete with wallabies and kangaroos. We only left once to visit Toowoomba City Aquatic Centre and also to do some shopping. Sunshine Families was approximately A$80.00/night for 5 of us and has a great selection to keep the kids busy, as well as pool, spa, sauna, and a huge, well-equipped Clubhouse. Something for everyone! Our accommodation was a small motel-type unit, with cooking facilities, but without showers. These were situated in a nearby block and we felt that they could do with an upgrade. Our next stop was a couple of hours north-east in the Noosa area. We found our lovely three bedroomed house advertised in "The Australian Sun and Health Magazine" (A$30 a night). We were warmly welcomed by the owners and left to relax. The beach is five minutes walk from the house, and central to amenities. |
We didn't have the best of weather, but there was enough sun to visit a couple of the local beaches, including Alexandria Bay, which offers a lovely walk en route to and from the sand through a National Park. There are heaps of attractions around this area, of which we only visited a few to keep our relaxation levels up. However, after a few days we headed South to Sunleisure Nature Resort, for the final days of our trip, where we were also warmly welcomed by Sharon and Des. Sunleisure is on 38 acres of land and also offers bush walks, although we didn't see any kangaroos while wandering around. |
Again, there is plenty here to keep everyone occupied, with spa, sauna and pool, along with a great playground and fully equipped gym (that we didn't take advantage of)! We did spend a day at one of the nearby theme parks - Dreamworld - and did a great job of getting lost in the dark on the way home! At Sunleisure, we met fellow Kiwi's Dawn and Geoff and enjoyed a challenging meal together, trying to demolish a HUGE container of ice-cream that Geoff had thought was such a bargain - he couldn't resist. |

Our accommodation consisted of a motel unit with bathroom and fridge, but cooking facilities were in the nearby Clubhouse. Price was again about A$80/day. Definitely a great place to lay back and unwind. |
Approximately 45 mins from Brisbane, it was a quick trip back to drop off the rental car and board our aircraft for the flight home. |

I like fishing and with word there are trout in the river it was a nice feeling to be nude in the river fishing for trout although after a lot of trying, I still came home empty handed, such is life. We went nude 4 wheel driving, which was a new experience for us both, and also very enjoyable with the amount of tracks available. The days all rolled into each other and before we knew it, it was time to leave this unique piece of paradise. Katina and Colin made us so welcome in the few days in which we were there. Next time will be a longer holiday. River Island is on the Internet, it can be found at: http://www.riverisland.com.au Don't be like my wife and I and hold off going, it is a wonderful place for a holiday to recharge your batteries. RETREAT TO
River Island
After many attempts to go down and visit Colin and Katina, my wife Helen and I finally managed to get a few days free. A nice easy drive down the freeway to Sydney was followed by the usual morning traffic in Sydney (will leave later next time). The drive down to Mittagong these days is so easy with the freeway making it a breeze. It was a pleasant stop in Mittagong to stock up on some supplies for the few days we were going to be at the retreat. Following the easy directions we were given had us at the convict built tunnel in no time at all. It is a quite amazing piece of workmanship when you realise the tools they had back then. The trip from there on was a little slower as the scenery across some of the valleys is awe inspiring and the odd truck coming the other way made us take it a bit easier. We came to the gate and drove in and down below in the distance was the retreat stretching along the river looking very much like a picture postcard. |
Pulling up beside the pool, we were met by the very lovely hostess Katina who showed us around the pool and recreation area. Katina took us up to the office and after formalities took us to our cabin, which had a fantastic view over some of the resort and the mountains that surround it. The cabin was set out extremely well and when you think how Colin got them in to the retreat, it shows you how much hard work was put in. Between the cabins is a communal BBQ with views up the mountains, one way and down to the river the other, so a great place to cook dinner and enjoy the view. With 1500 acres there is plenty of space for you to relax in, the pool and spa area is the popular place after dinner. We were there midweek when it was a bit quiet and each afternoon there were fantastic pancakes made for us. |

Manawatu Celebrates
It's official - we're not going to have a summer. Despite that, it's great that we have plenty of activities at Manawatu Outdoor Leisure Club which can be reported. The grounds are looking great. The extra rainfall has meant that everything is a lot greener than we would expect for this time of the year. Add to this the results of all the hard work by Kelvin, our Grounds Supervisor, a working bee, and follow up work by several members, site beautification around several caravans, and you'll understand why. With some members attending the Wellington Rally, our numbers were somewhat down on this New Year's Eve. Nevertheless, we had an enjoyable time together, culminating in the Peace Candle being lit just before midnight, and everybody joining hands for Auld Lang Syne at midnight, with the more adventurous ones deserting the clubhouse for a dip in the pool. Throughout the holiday period, many members have stayed at the club. |
It has been particularly pleasing to see some of our new family groups involved. In addition to enjoying the club's facilities, they've also found it an ideal base for trips away to such places as Splash Planet in Hastings, and Kapiti Island, a bird sanctuary just off the coast from Paraparaumu. There have been some great photo opportunities, and our club album has a large selection of recent shots, each with their own rather tongue in cheek captions. To date, yours truly, club photographer, has managed to remain 100th of a second at f8 ahead of the lynch mobs. Highlight of our year so far must be the Special General Meeting called for Sunday 23rd January, where a large number of members attended to see George and Doreen presented with a Life Membership, recognising their long and devoted services to the club. The afternoon tea that followed immediately afterwards was also well attended, and provided the ideal venue for more than just a little reminiscing. |
On Wellington Anniversary Day, we had a visit from the Fire Brigade. This time, we didn't need their services - they needed ours. A large scrub fire had broken out on farmland south of the club grounds, bringing in a helicopter and monsoon bucket, and fire engines from all around the area. Our swimming pool provided one fire engine with a much needed refill, heavy rain dampened things down overnight, but several more loads were needed to douse hot spots the next day. It was a little worrying when we were advised that a wind change to the south could endanger the club grounds, and we may have to evacuate, but happily it never came to that. Over the holidays we've had many visitors, some of them overseas visitors, and many travelling to or from the rally. If you'd care to visit, why not give us a call? We'd love to show, and share with you, our little patch of paradise. |

Visitors to the 48th Annual Naturist Rally held at the Te Mania grounds of the Wellington Sun Club, found that they had been consigned to the "Relics", the "Decadents", the "Periodicals" or the "Durables", for their camping holiday. Such were the names of the camp sites. The Club grounds are developed on four levels, with each area becoming a unique enclave from each other, thus minimising the noise levels for those seeking a quiet, relaxing holiday. The sports courts are also separated from the main lawn area and whilst some 170 people were in attendance, it was little evident, other than during the social evenings or at times when the Y2K games - inter-club mad sports - were being played during the lunch time break. Most visitors travelled to the Wellington venue on December 27th, allowing time to set up camp and settle in prior to the NZNF Annual General Meeting of Club delegates on the morning of the 28th December 1999. The business was concluded in a cordial atmosphere of co-operation, to be followed by the Delegates Luncheon, put on by the host Club. |
There followed a photo opportunity to record the NZNF Officers and Delegates and this was done among the beautifully manicured gardens prepared by June, along the stream bed that runs through the Club grounds. The flowers and shrubs in this area were in full bloom and provided a wonderful setting for photographs. The official opening of the Rally took place on the main lawn at 4:00pm, with the unveiling of three living statues commemorating various aspects of Club life - an athlete, a president and young Eve. The general meeting of members was held and the highlight was the awarding of Honorary Life Membership of the NZNF to Doug Cousins, the first such award to the NZNF Roll of Honour (see report elsewhere). The first evening function was the Black & White Night, with some delightful costumes evident. The nostalgic music through the eras was welcomed by young and old alike, allowing us to sing along with Vera Lynn or to tap our toes to Glen Miller's "American Patrol". |
We danced a lot to the more recent rhythms of the Beatles and Pink Floyd etc. Each morning the young ones were entertained with painting, games and horse riding. Young adults were provided with the opportunity to go 10 pin bowling and to the Extreme H2O Aquatic Centre. Everyone had an enjoyable time, with some of the youth joining in the Rally Sports Programme. There was brilliant, fine weather for the first four days and early evenings were spent at Bevan's Bar, located behind the pool and close to the BBQ. Fresh salads and chicken raffles were on offer daily. A unique feature being lettuce growing around the stone wall and available to the campers to supplement their meals. The ladies provided a delightful evening with Wine and Cheese and then followed a comedy and juggling show in the main hall. The entertainment by Rusty Balls was first rate and everyone retired with aching sides from their laughter. Sessions of Reflexology and Body Scrubbing were well attended and proved an enjoyable diversion from the strenuous activities on the games court. All photos: Les Olsen |

On another fun night, we went "Back to School". Teacher Howard, made us do sums and a spelling test, We played charades and sang nursery rhymes. Each table group had to sing a nursery rhyme, which could not be repeated by any of the other nine groups. It was amazing that the hail was circulated five times with different rhymes before we started to lose our voices. We all retired early, as the next night was to be New Years Eve. A few showers appeared on the last evening of the year, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of everyone attending the New Year Disco. We danced and danced until the countdown to midnight and on the very hour, we threw streamers, popped poppers and embraced as many of the others as possible, welcoming everyone to the New Millennium! Our M.C. did the "Pull Monty" and so did some of the other hardy souls who took a midnight swim, whilst some of us more sober ones looked on with amusement. Some two more hours of dancing and the camp fell silent around 2:00am. |
Through the earlier part of the Rally, everyone was encouraged to write a message on a large plastic card. It was intended to attach the card to a large helium-filled balloon and release it from the summit of the Rimutaka Ranges some 10 kilometres from the Club grounds at the precise moment of the sunrise - dawn of the new millennium, A large contingent of members departed the Club grounds around 4:30 am for the journey to the summit and joined with many locals to view the sunrise. The amusing part of this story. was that Howard took charge of the helium- filled balloon and on the final trek to the summit he slipped and fell on the balloon which promptly burst - leaving Howard with a nasty scratch on his face, when he made contact with the card on his flight earthwards! In the event, the early morning was cloudy and all that was seen from the summit was a small band of dawn light on the eastern horizon, below the cloud base; a disappointment to all those who arose early for the viewing. |
![]()
The balloon and card was finally released at midday on New Years Day from the Club grounds and was last sighted at about 2,000 feet, disappearing in an easterly direction into low cloud. Where is it now? WHO KNOWS!!! A live band, "Time Warp" were present the night of January 1st, providing music for costumed aliens, space junkies, flower-people from the 60's and other assorted flotsam. It was another fun night, which again ended in the wee small hours. The traditional Perc Cousins Trust Concert was held on the final night, with each Club present at the Rally being asked to provide an item for the entertainment. There was some great talent on display, with singers, dancers and sundry comedians strutting their stuff. Some of the group entertainment was hilarious and each performance was greeted with salutary applause. The sports finals were held on the final day and the trophies presented in the late afternoon. Whilst most of the country suffered inclement weather throughout New Year, we at "Five Acres" were spared. With the storm clouds gathering, many tired, exhausted bodies forced themselves to break camp and depart for home, having once again enjoyed the companionship of fellow naturists. This Rally, "First to the Millennium", was a joyous and somewhat unique experience for the first time rally attendees and a worthy adventure for those of us who have attended rallies for many years. We will all join together again at "Pineglades" in Canterbury, for "Circus 2001", from 27th December until 3 January 2001. Why not join us? By Les Olsen |

Samurai Carnival '99
by Tony Hodskiss
All photos: Tony Hodskiss
After weeks of rain, Saturday, 20 November dawned fine and warm for the third annual Samurai Beach Nude Carnival. This year, the turnout was a lot bigger than the previous two years. All along the beach was a myriad of colour, from the shelters and umbrellas and 4wd's, as people turned out for some serious - and not so serious fun! For entry to the beach, a gold coin donation was accepted and the money raised went to help the Birubi Beach Lifesavers, who have, for the past three years, patrolled the beach during the Carnival and administered first aid when needed. At the end of the day, there was a presentation of a surf rescue board to the Club. The day started with a limbo line and some people found that muscles don't flex real well early in the day. There was the usual "fill-the-bucket" relay event, with competitors having to run to the waters edge and fill a holey bucket up and try and fill the larger bucket. The three-legged race provided some good spills, as the contestants tried to get coordinated. The younger nudists were well looked after, with a jumping castle, flag races and lolly and spoon races, with the younger ones having a great time. Unfortunately, due to a shark sighting early in the day and bluebottle jellyfish later on, the surf events had to be cancelled, but most just joined in with whatever other events were going on. Last year, 134 people got together for the 'nude bootscootin' and this year that record was broken again, with 168 people joining in. Beach volleyball was the big attraction this year, with 4 volleyball courts set up for all to enjoy, including one jumbo size court, on which about 120 people tried to play with giant, multicoloured balls. The main event of the day was "The Mr and Ms Samurai Beach". Contestants this year, instead of parading around, hopped onto the volleyball court and showed their skills in front of the opposite sex contestants, who were the judges. "Bones", from Medowie was the men's winner and "Roxanne" from Taree was the ladies winner. |

Thanks to River Island Nature Retreat, Bardots Clothing Optional Resort, Samurai Clothing Company, the NSW Free Beach Association, ROSCO and Australian Sun and Health for putting the time and a great deal of effort into what is becoming one of the best nude beach carnivals in the Southern Hemisphere. Without the help of these tireless people, we would not have the great day that we have. The carnival in Yr. 2000 is going to get bigger so, if you are in the Port Stevens area in November, pop on down for a great day.

CLUB NEWS
New Zealand: The 42nd NZNF Council Meeting, at Wellington Sun Club, New Zealand For the first three days of the six day NZNF Rally "Five Acres" was bathed in brilliant sunshine. However, the rest of the week was rather wet. Over 170 members, representing affiliated Clubs, met to celebrate the first naturist rally of the new millennium. Traditionally, the Council Meeting was held prior to the traditional sports competitions. Only one change in the Executive was made, that of the PRO. The following NZNF Executive were elected to office: President - Kay Hannam North Island President - Mike Kelly South Island Vice President - Hellen McGregor Secretary - Pamla Kelly Treasurer - Kevin Sampson Public Relations Officer - Graham Macgregor Sports Co-ordinator - Ken Mercer Editor NZ Naturist - Les Olsen Business Manager NZ Naturist - Laurel Olsen Alan Jarvis was again appointed as Auditor. Archivist, Les Olsen and Internet Co-ordinator Murray Nash, continue to provide these valuable services to the NZNF. Peter Moosberger has also been re-appointed as Secretary for the Supporter Membership Group. Delegate to INF Congress President NZNF Kay Hannam. Without a doubt, the greatest achievement of the NZNF, was taking part in the television documentary "NUDE ZEALAND". This was screened on nation-wide television on prime time, in June 1999. Among other initiatives reported to the Council was a colour brochure, designed especially for women. Also, the introduction of an 0800 word number - 0800 NATURIST (0800 628 874) giving prospective members and visitors easier access to information via the Yellow Pages and other advertising media. |

Our Internet site proves to be very popular with now well over 80,000 hits and we can now boast 100% of all affiliated New Zealand naturist venues have a presence on the Web. All naturists may apply to become part of the all@nznaturally.org.nz email address list, by contacting our Internet Officer at muza@clear.net.nz. After a lengthy review of resolutions passed over the last 38 years, a number of remits tidying up the constitution and financial areas were presented at the Council Meeting. All were discussed cordially and resolved, some with amendments. The final analysis of the NZNF Survey, has resulted in two working parties being set up. The first to study Passport Security, procedures and registration; the second will look at the whole Supporters Group set-up. |
Breaking with tradition, the members meeting followed immediately after the council meeting. Doug Cousins was awarded inaugural Honorary life Membership of the New Zealand Naturist Federation for his dedication and commitment to the organisation. A guide to Naturist venues has been produced and is now available for sale at NZ47.50, plus overseas postage of NZ43.50. Copies of this very comprehensive guide to clothes-free holiday destinations in New Zealand are available by writing to Holidays Nznaturally, P O Box 76, Lake Tekapo, New Zealand. ROBBERT BROEKSTRA
We sadly report the sudden death of Robbert Broekstra, in the Netherlands, on 27 December, 1999, at the age of 61 years. Robbert was recognised world-wide for his reporting on naturist sites and activities during his many overseas travels which included Europe, North and South America, Asia and the South Pacific. His articles and photos were published widely throughout the World in naturist publications and this will continue for sometime to come, as his legacy to naturism. As the leader of his naturist photo-club - a special interest group (SIG) - based in Gouda, Holland and his International Naturist Information Centre, he was able to communicate with many people internationally, providing information obtained through his personal experiences. Robbert was born in Holland, but grew up and educated in Canada. He -returned to Holland where he began his working life and there embraced the benefits of nude recreation. Through his interest in photography and writing, he began his many overseas journeys. Laurel and I had the opportunity to host him whilst he travelled through New Zealand in 1996. |
He will be sadly missed by his many friends and associates and the naturist community will find difficulty in filling the void left in his passing. |
Naturists in New Zealand join with many others in recognising the time and effort put in by Robbert in promoting naturism and express sincere condolences to his family and friends. Les Olsen - Editor |

CLUB NEWS
Wanganui Sun Club Inc.
After reading about the AOHC 'Birthday Bash', it led me to rambling through some papers and I have come up with this bit of history from Wanganui. The 1st All-NZ Naturist Rally was held at Ivan Mowlem's property 31 January - 1st February, 1953. The lucky ones got the use of the bach containing 4 bunks, a kerosene cooker and a small fire stove-heater. Room for a number of tents if you desired. Ivan recommended the Central Private Hotel. The cost, being the princely sum of £6.6.0d per week. Please do not trust Ivan's Dog - he might get nasty. The 2nd NZ National Rally was at the same place, (Wanganui) 23 - 24 January 1954. Visitors from the North were recommended to come by train via Marton or Hamilton. Fares being £3.12.3d and £2.12.3d. From the South, return fare from Wellington about £2.0.0d by train or NZR Bus. Please do not trust Ivan's Dog - he might get nasty. The 4th NZ National Rally, Wanganui. 28-29 January, 1956. Games available included Temkoit, Badminton, Volleyball, Quoits, Darts and Putting. (Please bring your own clubs) - also badminton racquets. Please do not trust Ivan's Dog while he is tied up, but he is quite docile when left off for a run in the evenings. The 5th NZ National Rally, Wanganui, same place. 1-3 January, 1957. The admission fee a minimum of 2s. 6d. per adult per day. "We would like to have more members giving items at the Concerts. Don't hide the talent". Please do not trust Ivan's Dog! I do not know what breed of dog Ivan Mowlem had, but it seems it had plenty of attitude. I hope you enjoy reading bits of the past as I did, if only momentary. The future is the way to progress. |

Loch Ness Nude Swim
Dear Friends, We are making progress with the British Naturism swim. We have decided upon Loch Ness and hope to swim on MONDAY 17 July. At present about ten people are interested, so I'm certain one team of 6 will swim. I hope that a second will too. I'm writing now to ask for a firm commitment. Overseas swimmers will need to arrange their own training programme and will need to discuss this with KEVIN MURPHY, our Coach. In terms of cost, BN would like £50 per swimmer, towards the cost of boat hire, insurance etc. (Last year's channel swimmers paid £100 towards a cost of £300 per person). You will need to consider travel and accommodation costs. I'm quite happy to perform medical examination at no charge. I would like a reply as soon as possible if you are interested and wifi pass your details to Kevin. Please feel free to contact me, especially if you have any questions. Look forward to hearing from you. Roger Johnson (Sports Officer) roger@delphcottage.demon.co.uk +44 1278 691548 Home +44 1278 446816 Fax

Not the best weather for the beach, yet some of our members are still sporting an all-over tan. We can't rely on the weather but we can certainly rely on the friendship and hospitality of many people, enjoyed throughout the summer. By popular demand, our Saturday evening sessions at the local indoor pool will be held on the first and third Saturdays of each month during the winter, commencing on April 1st. Only a fool would miss out! (Sorry, I couldn't resist that one!) Enquiries, phone (03) 322-7990. Joyce |

The Shore Since my childhood I've been thinking why everything around us: flowers, trees, animals do not wear clothes and we, humans, are isolated from every living being, as if we were guilty of something. Earlier, I had a vague idea of why I felt badly, but, in the course of time, I realised the reasons for my poor state of mind. I was lacking freedom and harmony in my life. Then I decided to undress, and to approach nature. For that I got up in the early morning and went outside town to the shore of a lake, so that nobody could see me. I chose a place in bushes, undressed, and instantly felt that I am a little, but significant part of this enormous world. But, I felt disturbed. Suppose I would be seen! The time of my real life was limited. Since then, I couldn't do without contact with sun, water and earth. I felt a surge of energy but I wanted people around me to share my joy, and to associate with them. |
As far as I am concerned, dressed people haven't got real relations with nature; they can't be completely happy. You know, there is an ancient parable about man being divided in two parts - and then losing his second part. Now we are, as that man. We've lost our second part, namely - nature! I did not think I would be able to find like-minded persons. When I was walking along the lake shore I saw nude people. They were merry, cheerful and looked friendly. I stood rooted to the spot. I said: "Can people really do this?" That is the way I met members of Club "Helios". Here I found like- minded persons and more than that, I met a girl whom I fell in love with. She understands me, she shares my views and we compliment each other. I always pity those persons who are afraid to be as they truly are. I would like to help them. It is no crime to love the World. To approach nature, to live in harmony with it, is the only right way. Anatoly Muraviev |

With the sun shining bright on a lovely morn I thank our dear Lord that I was born The clear blue skies and very pure air Sun on my body as I recline in a chair We can bound around in the "all together" Quite oblivious of any weather The sounds around are lovely to hear Splashing in the pool and volley ball cheer
Lazing around in the lovely warm sun Getting a neat tan, including my bum All you textiles who won't be unclad Don't criticise us, we know we ain't bad Do not be shocked or even frightened We believe that we are the enlightened Nudists do not shy from the body bare Unbelievers may be shocked and driven to despair
We came to this world in a state of undress The prudes changed all that and now what a mess They giggle and chuckle with looks so sly I often wonder if they really know why When life is over and we are in the ground We nudists thank the Lord for the freedom we found.
