Opoutere Beach (Ohui)

The distance from Whangamata is about 22 km.

Where:-

From State Highway 25, 14 km north of Whangamata, turn east at the sign to Opoutere and drive 4 km to the Opoutere Beach Recreation Reserve. Walk 10 minutes through the pines to lovely ocean beach, then north (left, facing the beach), about 200 m.

What's there:-

Motor Camp 200 m past the reserve. Shops and petrol at Whangamata. A popular clothes-optional beach; however, bird watchers commonly walk around the southern end, so walk north along the beach from the main access track. Having said that, there are a number of private access points to the beach - many of those users go naked too. (Ohui is at the northern end of the beach.)

Comments:-

Jan 08, DB - I was introduced to Opoutere beach by some friends and WOW... what an awesome place. We were a fair way up the beach from the access-way, still had a few textiles wander pass but they did not seem too upset, in fact I might have made a convert or two.

Nov 07, JW - A particularly pretty campground with very friendly and helpful owners. Recommended!

Jan 06, PD - Had Saturday afternoon here, great to see six other couples there and the weather was ideal - slightly overcast. Rough seas but a good swim; will definitely be going back again this summer.

Dec 05, PD - Bloody fantastic weather - almost to hot and very little wind slightly offshore so the water was flat and hardly anyone on the beach, but of all the people there I was the only one with the kit off. Had a great day and will go there again for sure.

Jan 00, NJ - The Motor Camp has new owners who no longer allow clothes-optional camping. However, there were a dozen or so naturists on the beach to the left of the main access track. A lovely, popular clothes-optional beach.
