February

Dear Friends,

I hope your holiday has been as good as mine, your all-over sunburn turned to a beautiful golden brown; that you are rested and refreshed, and getting all those New Year resolutions underway.

NGATAHOA LODGE WEEKEND: Our Free Beach Rally for l982 will be held over Anniversary Weekend, Jan 30,31 Feb 1, at Ngatahoa Lodge. Situated deep in the Kaimai Ranges, Ngatahoa Lodge has modern amenities and is ideal for a nudist holiday. There are beautiful bush walks to waterfalls and swimming pools. Isolated and extremely pleasant. Bunks, with rubber mattresses, for fifty people, but accommodation for 100; all cooking facilities (gas cooking), hot water, showers, flush toilets; a lovely fresh running stream, bush for miles, plenty of room for sunbathing. (Sorry, NO PETS ALLOWED.) Cost is $5 adults $2 children under 12. Bring your own food (no refrigeration), sleeping bag, pillow, torch, towel and your friends.

As the camp is locked, we must meet and proceed together. From State Highway 1, turn east onto State Highway 29, following the Tauranga signs over the Kaimais to McLarens Falls Road on right, before the Wairoa River bridge. Thorn Rd. on left. Meet here at l0.45 a.m. Saturday, 30 January. Those travelling on Friday night may contact Charles Saggers, 2l8 Papamoa Beach Road, R.D.7, Te Puke (Tauranga 57-497) for overnight accommodation. Please advise Charles or me (Adrianne, Auckland 362-979) if you will be coming, so that we will wait for you. Contact also if you need to cancel! Anybody able to provide a spare seat in their car, and those wanting seats, please ring me, and I will try to match you up.

It should be a fabulous weekend, and I'm looking forward to seeing you all there.

SAUNA: Our evenings at 104 Fanshaw Street have become very popular, with up to sixty members thoroughly enjoying themselves, lots of new members joining, and a few visitors from the Sun Clubs. This is where it is all happening, Sundays, 5 - 9 p.m. Bring your towel and your friends. Re-opening 7 February. $4 single, $7 double.

CLIVE GREEN SAUNA: Re-opens 14 February. Prices will be the same as last year, $3 single, $5 double, children under 15, free.

Most people enjoy the relaxation the sauna induces but are not aware of its therapeutic benefits. The effect of the heat on the body is to create a natural fever. Fever is one of the body's own defensive and healing forces. The high temperature speeds up metabolism, and inhibits the growth of virus or bacteria. Fever is an effective protection and healing measure not only against colds and simple infections, but against the more serious skin disorders. It also helps insomnia and muscular pain.

Saunas have a very stimulating effect on the skin, our largest eliminating organ, or the so-called "third kidney". It is generally believed the skin should eliminate 30% of the body wastes by way of perspiration. Due to lack of physical work and overly sedentary life, the skin of most people today does not perspire enough and therefore does not help the cleansing process. A word of warning though, people with any heart condition or high blood pressure should be very careful about taking saunas, and should ask their doctor's advice.

SUMMARY OFFENCES ACT: The Summary Offences Act comes into effect on 1 February, 1982. Section 27, 'Indecent Exposure' now reads:

1. Every person is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or a fine not exceeding $1,000 who, in or within view of any public place, intentionally and obscenely exposes any part of his or her genitals.

2: It is a defence in a prosecution under this section if the defendant proves that he or she had reasonable grounds for believing that he or she would not be observed.

This differs from the clause in the original draft quoted in the October newsletter. The essential alteration (apart from removal of reference to a person's person) is that now both male and female can be guilty of indecent exposure. The wording, intentionally or not, excludes a woman's breasts. This would appear to give tacit approval to topless bathing, however, before you rush off to Mission Bay, please remember this could (and probably would) still be regarded as offensive behaviour.

In essence, our position has not changed. As the above section requires intentional obscenity, it is the unchanged sections on offensive behaviour that prosecutions would probably come under. In this respect we must continue to rely on Judge Wilson's 1975 findings, and meanwhile do our best to ensure that the locations where nude bathing could be regarded as being the expected and accepted thing continue to grow rapidly in number.

KAWAU ISLAND CRUISE: Charles Saggers has cancelled the trip to Great Barrier Island, but has booked the same boat for a weekend cruise to Kawau Island and around the gulf. This departs from Auckland on Friday evening 5 March and returns Sunday evening 7 March. Accommodation on board and all meals at a cost of $119 per person. This should be a great weekend doing our own thing, sunbathing, swimming, fishing etc. For sun lovers only. Do join us and have fun together, Charles is relying on Auckland members and friends to make it possible. Deposit of $12 required (not refundable, unless for some reason the trip is cancelled). If you would like a brochure, write to Charles Saggers, 2l8 Papamoa Beach Road, R.D.7, Te Puke, or phone Tauranga 57-497.

HAWKES BAY: Local organiser Margaret Soper, phone Hastings 67-351, advises that beach meetings will be held every Sunday through February at Waimarama, and an outing at John Beaumont Swim Centre heated pool some time in March. Hope you're having some great get-togethers out there now that it's all being laid on for you. Thank you, Margaret.

BEACH LIST: Enclosed is our new beach list as far as it goes. As you can see, there are great chunks of our coastline where all-over sunbathing must be totally unfashionable. I can hardly believe this, and hope those of you with other beaches will write in and let us all know about them. Thank you very much those who have supplied information so far. I welcome any additions and alterations you can send in, as I hope that eventually the list will become suitable for the use of overseas tourists, which is why full directions are needed.
