January-February 1984

Dear Friends,

Once again a successful and happy Anniversary Weekend was spent at Ngatuhoa Lodge in the Bay of Plenty. About 60 people enjoyed sun-bathing, bush walks, dancing - all manner of relaxing pursuits - with, of course, the most congenial company one could wish for. For those of you who haven't been there and done that yet (or, like me, couldn't make it this year) it is a MUST for 1985.

THANK YOU, Charlie Saggers, for making it possible.

While the good weather is still with us, camping will be a popular activity, and perhaps you would like to try Geyserland Leisure Park. To get there from the direction of Auckland you take S.H. 5 (Rotorua-Taupo), and turn right on to the Waititi Valley Road (store and garage on your right). Next turn will be left into Te Kopaia Road (dust); stay on that road until you come to Geyserland on your right (about 15 km from main road). Coming from Taupo, turn left at the Mihi Bridge and stay on that road. Geyserland will be on your left. Camping will be basic - there are two nice thermal pools, and the river (careful!). The Rotorua Sun Club has facilities a little way further on, and they are very hospitable about sharing them.

Of course, you will all have your excellent camping guide which was prepared by Adrianne; we trust you are making good use of it.

Anyone going North? A long-time member, Thelma Geerkins, would love to see some. F.B.G. people, and is offering bed-and- breakfast accommodation at Paihia at $25 per night for 2. Thelma's address is: P.O. Box 281, Paihia.

And if you're thinking of touring Norfolk Island you will find the Free Beach Group alive and well in the shape of John Lowe (formerly of Auckland and Wellington) locally known as the "Anson Bay Streaker". Anson Bay is about 5 km. "away", John says, but check out Cemetery Bay as well.

DON'T RING PADDY LEGGETT on his old number; could be embarrassing.
    New number: 535-5569.

LOST at Ngatuhoa: A large wok, left in the outside cooking area. Property of Stan Foster, who would be very glad to hear from anyone who can help in any way. Stan's phone number is: 765-594.

SAUNA NIGHTS at Clive Green's will recommence on 19 February
The cost is
  $3.00 single,    $5.00 double    $2.50 pensioners
5-9 p.m.       Free tea and coffee.
Bring a friend - reduce the cost, and improve the companionship (if that were possible!).

SWIM NIGHTS AT RICCARDO'S, PARAKAI, re-commence on Friday,

24th February.

Cost: Adults $2.50, Chn 50c, Toddlers free.
Friends are welcome, but please remember that swimwear is not permitted in the pool under any circumstances.

It is proposed to hold a Barbeque at Ladies' Bay on

* * * SUNDAY, 26 FEBRUARY * * *

High tide will be at 3.55 p.m. To get there, take the waterfront road to St Heliers, then up Cliff Road. There is plenty of parking half way up, and the entrance to the beach is well marked. Barbeques and sausages will be supplied, so all you need to bring is your bread roll - of course, if you can't live without some salad and a wee drop of the good stuff by all means bring that too. Let's all make this a chance to meet old and new friends.

The Committee have been considering a venue for our Winter Social (in view of the temperature at Waiwera last year). So far we have been unable to come up with anything suitable, as Ricardo's is not - as they say - a "viable proposition". Any suggestions from members will be most welcome, the sooner the better so that we can act on them.

MEL BOLTON (a sun-bather) takes groups out for sailing weekends. Sounds like fun. Anyone interested can contact him on Ph. 501-592.

NAME TAGS will soon be available for non-members at a cost of $5.00. If you have any friends who would like one, contact John Riggir on phone 565-219.

Members in Other Centres: WE KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE

but we only have the mailing list to prove it. What about something with a little more human interest to it? Your opinions, holiday reports - anything will be grist to our mill. It was gratifying to note that some members travelling over the holiday period made use of the telephone directory to contact Auckland sunbathers. I hope this was done by Aucklanders in other centres, too.

Now I must rush this to the most obliging printer in town - our own Jim Long. Best wishes to you all --

     Lois
