Dear Friends,
Our AGM and Waiwera evening went off really well, with a record turnout of members. Fifty-three came to the AGM, including members from Hamilton, Ngatea, New Plymouth, and a contingent of four all the way from Wellington. Wonderful to have you with us, folks! A total of 65 went to Waiwera - lots of yummy food, and the pool was HOT, hot, hot - a great evening.
Our Photo Competition attracted only four photos plus a drawing, and I entered some of my own photos to pad it out. Frank Bowers won first prize with a shot of Carol sitting on the beach at Otama. Carol Bowers took second prize with a picture of the Ngatuhoa waterfall, Michael's drawing won third prize, and an extra prize went to Anthony Wilkinson. Jim brought along a lovely display of photos taken at Ngatuhoa, Mayor Island and other beaches.
Michael's drawing is printed on a separate sheet in this newsletter for a Colouring Competition. Thanks heaps, Michael. Perhaps other budding artists will send in their entries next year. We could make our own colouring book! The closing date for the competition is 1st October, and prizewinners. will receive Fred Bear T shirts.
As you will see from the list at the end of this newsletter, we have a great line-up of new committee members, all keen and enthusiastic. I am setting off to explore new horizons. I have enjoyed the work I've done for the Free Beach Group, and to give it all away has been a hard decision for me. Of course, I may not keep my finger out of the Free Beach pie, but who knows what the future may bring?
Best wishes to you all.
Our favourite holiday spot has been booked again this summer,
from Wednesday 23 January to Tuesday 29 January.
KEEP THIS WEEK FREE!!
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT: |
|
The past year has been rewarding and the present promises to be its equal. Correspondence from various parties has disclosed an interesting situation. While the police are looking to the councils to help them out on the issue of the acceptability of free beaches by declaring certain beaches as such; the councils tend to be supporting our contention that the Summary Of fences Act 1981 fully covers the issue. The result is there is not likely to be a proliferation of beaches declared 'free'; however, poorly defined bylaws seeming to prevent nude bathing should disappear.
It is said the success of show business depends on "bums on seats". The success of the free beach movement depends on bums (bare) on beaches. So let's hope this will be the year when finally the battling, bold bare bum brigade will breach the bastions of bigotry re bathing on beaches - in short, have a B. good summer.
[Page 2]
LETTERS TO COUNCILS: We thank those members who have written to their councils in support of our request for the bylaw to be dropped. If any of you live in areas where the council has a beachwear bylaw, we hope that you will put pen to paper and present your point of view. Nelson can be added to the list of bylaw-free areas, and it is also appears that Auckland and Waitakere have no nudity bylaws.
1990/1991 SUBSCRIPTIONS: It was decided at the AGM to hold this years subscriptions to $10. We think that is remarkably good value and a tribute to last years committee that we have been able to do this.
PLEASE FILL IN YOUR YELLOW FORM AND RETURN IT TO US PROMPTLY.
N.Z.N.F. RALLY: To be held at Pineglades, Christchurch, from 28th December to 3rd January 1991. Please get your Registration Form from the Secretary.

OBITUARY
We have received news that Bill Main has died. Bill has been a staunch supporter of the Free Beach Group ever since he joined in 1976. In the early days, members use to camp on his property at Bland Bay, in Whangaruru, where he lived. He had many friends and penpals, and will be sadly missed.

South Auckland Newsletter
|
SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 1990
Hi Folks! Well, what a lovely winter for ducks! Hopefully we'll pull out of it sometime, and then our old friend the SUN (remember what it looks like?) will shine again. Then we'll be looking once more for Free Beach activity. My wife arid I have just returned from a fantastic overseas tour where, amongst many other things, we sampled the taste of Wreck Beach in Vancouver, Canada, where five or ix thousand nudists were on the beach every day. Now to get the same laid-back scene operating in South Auckland...
We intend to have a meeting of all those South Auckland types, from Pakuranga south, and arrange a beach diary of our own. There s already been a suggestion that the South Auckland Sun Club invite us one weekend, and we reciprocate by inviting them to a beach day. In the south we have Mellon's Bay, Dynamite Bay, Tawhitokino, Hamilton's Gap, arid maybe even Kariotahi. Cur own home and pool could be used as a break, and for those who do not fancy the rather long tramps involved in a couple of these places. Perhaps there are one or two undiscovered suitable beaches. If you know of any, please send us the information forthwith. There is no reason why we should not join with the main Auckland group on occasions when their beach trips are reasonably close.
So come on folks, let's all get together to get our South Auckland group going. Move into the summer enthusiastically and show your face (and other parts) on as many beaches as possible.

WELLINGTON NEWSLETTER |
SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 1990
"Basically and simply stated, nudism exposes the whole expressive body of a human being, and clothes cover it up." - Richard J. Neutra F.A.I.A.
I came across the above quote and felt it should be shared. Right now we nudists will all be looking forward to the pending summer, and with this in mind a summer programme of fixtures for the Wellington district is published in this Newsletter.
Closer scrutiny of the Wellington calendar will show that the first two Sundays in each of the summer six months are static, and two popular localities are featured on a regular basis. The two - or sometimes three - remaining Sundays each month feature variable localities to be enjoyed. It is anticipated that individual members, or groups of members, will organize additional outings coinciding with official Sunday dates, but hopefully will use the days left free on the official calendar. Most Saturdays and all seven public holidays remain free.
The third Sundays in October and November are set down for Fitzroy Bay. Local area tramps in the nude could eventuate from the beach 'base camp'. Towards the south is Baring Head and/or the lighthouse, and the World War II Cook Strait gun emplacement/fort. East from the beach is semi-open hill country with wonderful views over surrounding areas, and across Cook Strait to the Kaikoura mountains. North is Lake Kohangatera, an interesting body of water set in a hidden valley and home for dozens of black swans.
If the wind is from the northwest, the Fitzroy Bay fixture may be switched to Rimutaka Forest Park. Should this situation arise, Bill will ring known starters. Others can call Bill to find out. His number is 628-514.
Adrianne, the Free Beach Group Secretary in Auckland, recently suggested to me that our Wellington district newspaper Contact Weekender publish, in the 'What's On' column, information about main Sunday outings. Alas, some similar publicity in Auckland last summer resulted in some experiences best avoided. Headquarters recommended that the name of the beach/locality, and the contact person's name, not be published.
Perhaps the entries each week could read along these lines: "The Wellington branch of the nationwide Free Beach Group will hold a group day at a Wellington district beach/locality this Sunday, dd/mm/yy, starting at hh:mm. Everyone is welcome: families, couples, singles, young folks. For information please phone (04) 628-514."
It has been very gratifying to see a large number of happy "Free Beacher's" gather regularly at the Cannons Creek Aquatic Centre. Local Sun Club members were in force on the second Sunday evening of each month. These swim nights will continue each month thru December. N. B. Peka Peka Beach Days will also occur on the same Sundays, and I am sure a large number of us will enjoy both venues.
A reminder - barbecue facilities are provided at the Aquatic Centre.

WELLINGTON WAVES
Saturday, June 23, began as an average Wellington day - the air was still and the sky clear. Alas, as the day progressed, it deteriorated, culminating in a gathering of dubious purpose otherwise known as the Wellington Free Beaches Mid Winter Swim.
As the late afternoon splash-off approached the sun averted its face and hid behind clouds. Rot air from Auckland met with cold air from the Southern Alps, creating brisk air movement, and as the temperature declined, so too did the numbers of those willing to bare all in the briny just south of Eastbourne.
Spectators, supporters, and coaches outnumbered the foolhardy and now famous few by many to three. Those who took the quick dip, Brian, Geoff and Michael, fully merited the special certificates that Brian had printed.
The afternoon's events were capped off by a potluck dinner at Bill's Eastbourne residence. The lounge was appropriately decorated with beach table and sun umbrella, Fred Bear towels, flashing Christmas lights and Sunny Funny (you will have to meet him for yourself - I can't describe him except to say that everyone enjoyed his company and dancing technique).
Dinner was followed by games and Bill's baubles, bangles and beads fashion show. The entire evening proved to be most enjoyable for the fifteen or so adults and children present, and promises to be a regular event on the winter calendar for the Wellington Free Beach Group.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 1990
SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 1990
The Christchurch group hosted its first swim night at Jellie Park Pool in Ilam Road on 21st July. 35 men, women and children enjoyed the pools for a couple of hours and then about 10 continued on to Halswell Tavern for a meal and the evening.
It was really great seeing old friends again after the end of summer and particularly encouraging to have a good support from the Canterbury Sun Club.
The evening was so successful that another has been booked for Saturday 29th September, with a barbecue to follow. So bring your friends and we will see you there. Thanks go to Wilf for organising it!!
General consensus at the swim night was that we adopt Spencerville Beach South as our "Home Beach". If an outing is advertised elsewhere and you are unab1e to make it, then the chances are that a Fred Bare flag will be flying at Spencerville.
Please always fly your flag so that we can get together as a recognised group and hopefully organise some games or swim together.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the barbecue and dip on 29th.
